Kevin Smith's Batman: The Widening Gyre #1 Reviewed

G-Man takes a look at Kevin Smith's second round with Batman.

Kevin Smith and Walt Flanagan are back on Batman.  This time instead of a three issue mini-series, they're doing six issues.  Here's your chance to see Bruce Wayne under the Bat-cowl once more.

Like most people, I'm a big fan of Kevin Smith's.  When I heard he was back on Batman, of course I was looking forward to it.  Kevin gives a good yet slightly different take on the Caped Crusader.  I have to say that Walt Flanagan's art has improved since Cacophony.  I seem to recall the art being an issue for some during that mini-series.  He manages to capture all of the different characters' look although there were a couple moments where things fell a little flat.  Kevin's writing gives us a look into Batman's mind.  It's not often you 'hear' him talk about things like endangering the lives of the children he takes under his wing.  It was really interesting to 'hear' him say that perhaps he won't take in any other kids in the future.

As far as the story goes, I'm really not sure what to think.  Perhaps I'll go back and re-read it.  I really wanted to like this issue going into it since it was Kevin Smith.  Something was just off for me.  Maybe there was just something about the story that I couldn't put wrap my mind around.  Of course I will be back for issue #2.  I'm curious to see where this is going to lead and who that "new" character will turn out to be.

What did you think?  Did you like this issue?  Is there something I'm missing here?  Did you like 'hearing' Batman's thoughts?  Did you think he was smiling too much?  What did you think about the art?  Are you coming back for the next issue?
