Kenneth Branagh A HUGE THOR Fanboy

And Captain America's going to be in IRON MAN 2?

Soon, very soon...
Soon, very soon...

I’ve been saying this whole time that Kenneth Branagh’s hiring as THOR director was a brilliant decision on Marvel’s part. A large portion of the man’s body of work has been spectacular production that have made Shakespeare plays exciting and accessible to modern audiences who usually find them all-too-often impenetrable. Considering that Marvel’s thunder god already speaks in a pseudo-Shakespearean manner and the Tales of Asgard frequently recall the regal sagas of RICHARD III and HAMLET, the hiring really comes off as a no-brainer. You’d really think there wouldn’t be any more gold points to weigh the scale in his favor.

Then, today, Branagh revealed to the LA Times that he was a huge fan of Thor as wee Irish lad.

So speaks Branagh…

"Growing up, my single comic book passion was Thor… From my time in Belfast as a kid, that's the first time I came across that comic, really, exclusively, I don't know why, but it struck a chord. I was drawn to it. I liked all the dynastic drama."

Just listen to the man talk how pictures the movie. This isn’t “Hur hur… I wanna make a dope popcorn movie.”

"Inspired by the comic book world both pictorially and compositionally at once, we've tried to find a way to make a virtue and a celebration of the distinction between the worlds that exist in the film but absolutely make them live in the same world… It's about finding the framing style, the color palette, finding the texture and the amount of camera movement that helps celebrate and express the differences and the distinctions in those worlds. If it succeeds, it will mark this film as different.... The combination of the primitive and the sophisticated, the ancient and the modern, I think that potentially is the exciting fusion, the exciting tension in the film."

Look at him. He'd ready fit right in swashbuckling next Balder and Hogun.
Look at him. He'd ready fit right in swashbuckling next Balder and Hogun.

Can this movie come out next month? Please? Approach, casting, tone… too many things are being done right to expect me to wait. And it looks like Marvel’s rubbing their hands together gleefully and capitalizing on that anticipation. Not only is Thor going to show up in IRON MAN 2, but there are actually going to be some blatant connections to the CAPTAIN AMERICA movie, according to Marvel’s production prez, Kevin Feige.

"Now many of the pieces are in place ... with 'Iron Man 2' finished and 'Thor' more than halfway done, that lattice work is being built.”

Fuse that latticework into place, Mr. Feige! I want to see this Marvel movies skyscraper be erected!  I suppose the point of discussion now will be to speculate as to just HOW these movies will be connecting together. Thor’s civilian identity, Donald Blake, will probably be showing up in a French jail for IRON MAN 2, but how do you figure Cap will be hinted at, oh connected-like-lattice Comic Vine community? Could SHIELD be asking Tony Stark for some new laser tech. to unfreeze the Sentinel of Liberty? Or, perhaps Tony will just slide into a big chunk of ice containing Cap while going for celebratory ski-trip in the mountains after the bad guys have been beaten?

how cool would it be for tony or Thor to  crash into the block of ice cap was frozen into!  Now onto Kenneth I think that he will do for Thor  what  John did for Iron Man, it seems that only when a director is connected to the story or character that they can stand and deliver.  I can now rest assured that Asguard will be true to form and we won't see a glowing cloud that is Odin ( sorry Ang Lee but you screwed the pooch on the Hulk).

Who's to say Chris Evans/ Cap aint gonna show up Nick Fury style?
I seem to remember reading the Cap movie's gonna be bookended in modern times and flash back for the bulk of the story so that could work.

he is a really good director
RATZGobbleron April 1, 2010 at 1:58 p.m.
They've got a victorian directing Thor. So why don't they get someone who's done war films for Cap? Wait who's directing that movie again?
The Sharp Dressed Ladyon April 1, 2010 at 2:23 p.m.
If you buy this crap about it coming across a Thor comic, most likely it did it on wikipedia.

So far, Iron Man 2 is looking like the winner.

@RATZGobbler:  Joe Johnston already did a superhero movie in World War II movie - - the ROCKETEER.
The Sharp Dressed Ladyon April 1, 2010 at 2:44 p.m.
@RATZGobbler: Joe Johnston would be a highly respectable choice for a Captain America director. However...

Kinka Usher is still a milestone director, still going strong. Bring him back to the movies, because you know he can.

And, If they could attract Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez, I could certainly be up to looking at what they'd have to offer.

I could even throw in George Lucas.

I was thrilled when Kenneth came on board to direct. I always appreciated his work and his old school Shakesphearean style.

I know everyone is looking forward to seeing Iron Man 2 - Which of course I'm one of those people. But Thor is what I'm really looking forward to the most, and I was never a big Thor fan. Which to me is pretty funny.

This is all great info, especially about Branagh being a Thor fan. My only problem is, its April Fools so I don't buy that Cap will be in Iron Man 2. Would it be awesome, hell yes. But I won't get my hopes up, I'd rather it be a surprise like Fury showing up at the end of Iron Man.

Erm...dude...what' bein' Victorian got to do with Thor?
I'm curious

Maybe he thinks it's in Norway lol

I've always been a huge Branagh fan. Watch his Henry V if you want to see him handle action without sacrificing story or character.

I'm actually slightly surprised he didn't cast himself as Fandral.
DevilmanEXon April 1, 2010 at 4:31 p.m.
Highly doubt Branagh was a Thor fan....Such BS.... When he was first hired as a director I remember reading a quote that said he wasn't into comics growing up and knew Thor but wasn't really familiar with the book prior to being approached by Marvel.  He expressed interest in the "interesting dynamic of the two worlds" and that's why he agreed.  Once the PR/ Marketing team gets a hold of you now that production has started stories change reaaaaaaal quick.  I like his work and am very excited for the movie BUT Hollywood is hilarious with their BS now trying to make him look like a fan to appease fanboys.

Quinton Tarantino for the directing job of Captain America? Have you gone insane? Oh yeah, I could just see Cap using his shield to slice off Natzi heads left and right. Pools of blood forming and causing the Red Skull to lose his balance and stab himself with a bayonet. Riiight. : p
Perhaps you meant Oliver Stone? I could see Oliver Stone delivering powerful epic-like war scenes that would blow away tons of audiences and would even attract the older generations to turn off CBS and get down to the local theater!

Dig Deeper into Iron Man

After being gravely injured and pressured under the threat of death to create a weapon of mass destruction, Tony Stark instead created a powered suit of armor to free himself and protect the world as the Invincible Iron Man.
