This morning, Dave McNary of Variety reported that writer, director, producer Joss Whedon received the Vanguard Award from the Producers Guild of America which recognizes technological accomplishments within film making.

The kudo will be presented at the 21st Annual PGA Awards ceremony on Jan. 24 at the Hollywood Palladium.

Whedon is a producer, writer, director, and creator for TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly," and "Dollhouse" with film scripts including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Toy Story," "Alien Resurrection" and "Titan A.E." He's penned the comic book series "Fray" and created and produced Internet series "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog."

Whedon has not only been a big name in the movie world, but his work has transcended into comic books with ease. Some of his most popular work includes Buffy: The Vampire Slayer Season 8 ( And Buffy related properties), Astonishing X-Men, and his short run on the Runaways. Many other big names have been honored with this award, including John Lasseter (Writer and Producer of many Pixar films), and George Lucas. Whedon now stands tall with those names as one of the great producers within the film industry.

"Joss Whedon has mastered the art of melding the newest technology with inspired storytelling, truly exemplifying the spirit of the Vanguard Award," said David Friendly and Laurence Mark, co-chairs of the PGA Awards.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is huge in the independent comic world, and Joss Whedon has a cult following, when it comes to his comic book writing. Although this award doesn't necessarily cover his work within the comic book community, it is briefly mentioned in the article, giving credit to his book Fray.

Finally getting a little professional recognition... shame it comes just after he's been cancelled.  Again.

He's the king of good shows getting canceled. I was never a Buffy or Angel fan, but they were both very good shows, and don't even get me started on Firefly... I'm still mad that show was canceled.

Huge fan of Joss' work, in TV and comics. The man is a genius, so glad he's getting the recognition he deserves.
