Four Biggest Ways DC's 'The New 52' Has Changed Supergirl

We have seen numerous versions of the girl of steel over the years. Is this another new interpretation or one more similar to what we've recently seen?

DC's 'The New 52' continues and each issue builds up the suspense in what we're going to get. Some characters remain virtually untouched from before while others have been given tweaks and changes as the DC Universe moves forward in a new direction. We have already seen some of the changes with Superman in the pages of Justice League #1 and Action Comics #1. Now it is time to see what changes Superman's cousin is facing.

Supergirl is a character that has changed several times over the years. Originally she started out as Kal-El's cousin, Kara Zor-El. After her death in Crisis on Infinite Earths, we saw the Matrix version of Supergirl, from a parallel universe. Then we had 80 issues of Peter David's Linda Danvers version. A return to the character's original roots, courtesy of Jeph Loeb and Michael Turner, gave us the return of Kara. She was older than Superman but had been in suspended animation longer, thus she was still considered a seventeen-year-old girl.

In the little glimpses of this new DC Universe, the attitude towards superheroes has changed. This is something Supergirl will be facing. From the first issue, it is evident that we will be seeing some changes. There will be some minor spoilers below. Be sure to check out the issue. These are the biggest changes that have happened to Supergirl.

Her Arrival

If we stick with the recent version, Kara's Kryptonian ship crashed into Gotham Harbor a couple years ago (in comic time). She emerged fully nude and it was Batman that was the first to encounter her after running from the local law enforcement. Supergirl does crash on Earth in a ship still. Her location is completely different. The impact of the ship results in Supergirl coming out in a completely different location. Let's just say, "We're not in Kansas anymore..."

With the amount of force and impact her ship causes, it's obvious that her arrival will not go unnoticed. She is immediately met by humans but you'll have to read the issue to see what sort of welcoming committee she encounters.

Her Clothing

I mentioned how originally she arrived with no clothing. Despite many of 'The New 52' books focusing on the...female form, Supergirl was allowed to emerge from her ship fully dressed. Not only was she fully dressed, but she had on her (new) costume.

What we don't know is why she arrives wearing it. Actually, she doesn't even know why she's wearing it. She mentions the significance of the suit but is ready for action with all her private bits covered up when she is greeted by humans. We all know the skirt is gone. She is now wearing what looks like a bathing suit with a cape and some interesting thigh-high boots. We are talking fancy Kryptonian fashion so who are we to judge what she wears?

Her Memory

When Supergirl arrived last time, she knew what was going on. Here, Supergirl believes she is dreaming at first. She has no idea where she's at. She doesn't understand why it's snowing and she's cold. She doesn't know why she's wearing her costume. She finds herself on a strange planet and doesn't have any answers.

There is mention of her parents. It remains to be seen what part they play into her arriving on Earth. We can assume that part will remain the same. She was sent before Krypton's destruction. What we don't know is her relationship to Kal-El. Yet another reason to read the next issue.

Powers

Kryptonians have different powers in 'The New 52." That's what we can gather from Action Comics #1. Superman was younger and clearly less powerful. Superman couldn't fly and struggled a little with his strength. Supergirl shows sign of being cold in the snow. This makes perfect sense if she's been trapped in a ship for (what we assume) is many years.

We've seen stories where the ship was designed to collect energy from the sun and Superman emerged from his ship with superpowers. Because of his portrayal in Action Comics, we have to assume that he's been slowly building up his powers. Yet when Supergirl is first exposed to Earth's sun, she is suddenly showing superhuman abilities. It's been said that Supergirl is more powerful than her cousin. Could that be the case and she simply processes the sun's energy more quickly and efficiently or is there another reason for this sudden burst or strength and powers?

What other changes will there be? What is her attitude like? What will she think of Superman? Where is she going to live and with who? These are just some of the questions we'll have to continue reading to see how everything unfolds. Supergirl is off to a great start. We may have lost some history since it's easy to assume this story takes place in current times (based on the appearance of a character at the end). This book also shows that you don't need to inject sexual elements in order to make a relaunch book interesting.

this is the series I'm most anxious to see succeed, love Kara when she's done right :)

The only way to do Kara right is to have Power Girl take her out back and put her out of her misery.

@TheCrowbar: Got the title right here: Old Kara. "No, Clark, she's my... self."

she looks the 52 version of powergirl only less revealing

ltbrdon Sept. 22, 2011 at 4:27 a.m.

ah I knew we'd get some inconsistency with kryptonian powers when Kara came to Earth. She's been under a yellow sun for a few seconds and she's already displaying superhuman abilities.....whereas Kal's been here nearly his entirely life and still can't fly or have his full invulnerabilty, strength, speed and other powers maxed out yet. That's exactly what I thought would happen after reading Action Comics #1.

The combination look of this new Kara seems to show us why there is no Power Girl in the new 52. However I'm okay with that if they combine Kara Zor-El's (Supergirl's) backstory with the personality and maturity traits of Kara Zor-L (Power Girl). We already saw that Karen Starr exists in the new 52 from Mister Terrific #1 but she didn't display any powers and really if the whole idea of the DCnU is to clean up some of the confusion to new readers you can't have a kryptonian-based Power Girl. Not saying Karen Starr can't be Power Girl, she can have super-strength and invulnerability at least, just that she shouldn't be kryptonian.......but without that she's just another strong woman so I think its better for the DCnU that Karen Starr remain just a normal, smoking hot, very intelligent human (we can have those in a comic book and she can still help out Mister Terrific and other heroes through her company) and let Kara Zor-El take on the personality traits of the old and beloved Power Girl.

Cosmetically I like the new costume but I don't see how, if it clearly has a more armored look to it than normal spandex (keeping in-line with the armor we know Kal will wear), its practically not to have a pants portion to it. Plus the groin and hips section are cut pretty high for anything that would be practical for doing anything but laying on a beach. The cape, upper torso and even boots look great (not so taken by the s-shield yet) but the bottom should have at least come down to biker shorts just to give it a bit more believability.
Iron_Turtleon Sept. 22, 2011 at 4:31 a.m.

Anyone else think that the Krytonian armour might have something to do with their powers this time around? Note that the younger and less powerful Superman in action comics is not yet wearing his armour.

Hope this thread will be going somewhere :P

I mean the whole "amnesic"-thing.

Does this mean New Krypton's out of continuity now?

TheMadMonkeyon Sept. 22, 2011 at 5:07 a.m.

I think it would be fair to theorize, although it probably won't be the explanation we'll receive, that as with many forms of life on our little blue marble, gender plays a role in the capabilities of a creature. An example of this can be found in the insect kingdom. Quite often, female insects are larger and more dominant than the males. There's nothing that says such a factor couldn't exist on other planets in the universe. Therefore, it's completely possible that female Kryptonians can gain powers quicker, even to the point of almost immediately, than male Kryptonians.

@Iron_Turtle: I've thought about that as well. Like maybe the armor helps them process the sun's rays better. It just seems that might be too big of a change. Who knows.

Loved it. 5-stars! Fantastic start. I like this better that the last few incarnations of Kara, so far. My only minor quibble is her shorts should be a bit more modest.

DEGRAAFon Sept. 22, 2011 at 6:50 a.m.

We still dont know if she had simulated yellow sun in her ship and so far she has been shown to be strong, resistant to temperatures, and have heat vision. I dont think they showed her more powerful then Kal and they showed her running but not super humanly fast. She even got hit but one of the shots while running. I dont think they portrayed her at all being more powerful than Kal.

RedheadedAtrocituson Sept. 22, 2011 at 6:54 a.m.

Got this yesterday as well and I'm so psyched to read it. I quickly leaped through pages yesterday to get the gist of what was being said and so far I'm blown away and excited for what is coming up for Kara! As far as the sudden spurt in superhuman powers, I can only attribute it to maybe being in midst of a total mind-screw considering she realizes this is no longer Krypton but Earth. She was attacked first and she most likely had the usual "fight or flight" response, which in any defense situation can give on increased capacity for fighting. It would be entirely inconsistent and lame to have her stronger than Kal in my opinion. Her wearing the costume baffles me too though...I still have to say the best origin story was in Superman/Batman where she was all naked and arrived in Gotham Harbor because you got the true sense of a lost Kryptonian trying to make sense of her new surroundings (on top of Michael Turner's art making her look absolutely great). So glad this book is one of my holds.

Hypo-Calviniston Sept. 22, 2011 at 7 a.m.

Does anyone actually think the revamp was necessary?

ltbrdon Sept. 22, 2011 at 7:04 a.m.

Well at this point we don't know when Kal's powers really started to kick in. He could have been strong, tough and fast since he was a child and his other abilities (heat, x-ray, hearing, etc...) developed as he matured. We don't actually know how old Kal is in Action Comics so its possible he hasn't reached the physical maturity of a kryptonian male whereas Kara is closer to a mature female kryptonian (going on the known fact that women complete maturity faster than men) and therefore her solar energy processing is better than Kal's in Action Comics and that's why she has the greater powers earlier.

Of course one thing I've wondered about in Action Comics is 1) did he have a small burst of flight when landing in the rich guys terrace? and 2) does he even know he can fly? If he's not aware of that ability being within him there's a possibility he already has access to it but is not aware of the mental component required to do so. His hearing and vision abilities would have come about in maturing phases and randomly because he's always using his eyes and ears. So when the ability came in it was uncontrollable and thus he had to work in reverse to get it under control. But flight has always been explained (or attempted to be explained) by the kryptonian consciously manipulating the bio-electric aura their cells produce in yellow sunlight. So if Kal isn't aware that the ability is available to him this continuity could make the case that flight does not randomly start but has to be taught or known about for the kryptonian to try and master. So this may be something Kara is aware of having lived on krypton (yes I'm going from a very Smallville centric concept here but just go with it) because of experiments conducted by her parent's and uncle whereas Kal, having grown up on Earth with no kryptonian heritage (yet) would not know he has that ability and that's why in the early issues of Action Comics its not a power he can use.

Just a thought but its better than reusing the same idea of Kara's ship having solar cells (why not put them in Kal's too) though just the fact of female's maturing faster would really suffice.
wane88on Sept. 22, 2011 at 7:05 a.m.
Why do you keep saying that Kara is cold? She isn't cold. She says that she should be freezing but she only feels a cool breeze.

Dig Deeper into Supergirl

Among the many incarnations of Supergirl, the most prominent as well as current is the "Girl of Steel" Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin and last survivor of Krypton's Argo City. In the new 52, Supergirl seems to have a more ruthless personality to help cope with her losses.
