Does The First Issue Of "Batgirl" Live Up To The Hype?

Babs takes a look at the first issue!

"Batgirl" #1 Reviewed!

If you know me, then you know that Cassandra Cain is a character that is very close to my heart. I'll admit, I had been skeptical when I first heard that DC had planned on giving the title of Batgirl to another character; however, it all makes so much sense. I know there are many people who were probably very upset with the fact that Cassie only physically appeared in the comic book for two panels, but I felt that it was just enough time to really explain why she had given up the cowl. Casandra has never been one on dialogue, nor had she really felt the need to justify her decisions to anyone (except maybe for Bruce, and being that he's gone now...).

Cassandra giving up the cowl makes sense because the sole reason she wore it was to represent and fight for the man who she considered to have saved her, Bruce Wayne. Being that she does not get along with Dick Grayson, and that he is now the man behind the cowl, Cassie can not fight and wear the bat symbol knowing that the identity of Batman has changed. My only fear is that Cassandra will fall under the ranks of DC's expired and untouchable characters, and never to be heard from again. Cassandra is too incredible a character to just fall off the face of the DC Universe and I for one will be very upset to see that happen. Having said that, it was still a good book and it is because of the writing that I really feel it is worth taking a look at.

The book is a chance to give Spoiler a breath of fresh air (she surely needs it). Whether she is a character that deserves her own title is debatable, but a lot of what makes a comic good is the life that a writer breathes into a story; and the breath that Brian Q Miller breathes into Stephanie Brown is certainly worth a look.

I'm with you, I do not particularly like the new Batgirl. I truly don't think she will last a year with the mantle. (okay, I'll give her one year, no more)

I really Like this issue.
I was wrong on my guess for who it'd be. But I'm totally fine with Spoiler.
I loved the Conversation with her and Cain. Great writing.
and the part where Batman and Robin where checking her out.
Good, good comic.

Steph becoming Batgirl was about as "surprising" as Dick taking over as Batman. Overall, though, I dug that this new series places her in college - at last, a tangible example of character growth (at least, chronologically speaking)!

Speaking of Dick, the relationship between himself and Cassandra has struck me as jinky over the past few months. I never quite got why she brought out his inner aggro. And Cassie's dialogue about renouncing the mantle might have rung more true if we hadn't seen her recruiting members for what we now call the Network alongside Alfred. I am encouraged, however, to have read Nelson saying he planned to revisit Cassie's character as the series goes on.

She did punch him through a wall that one time when he made Barbara Gordon cry...then there was the fact that she liked to go out unattended. He doesn't trust her ever since that whole rogue thing happened with her and she led the League of Assassins.

I don't see how you could think that  Cassandra would just disappear. She became so close to becoming the daughter to Batman. How could they just destroy that?  Especially if he's not REALLY dead. This looks like a drama that is just waiting to happen. What will she do when she discovers about what happened to Bruce. How will he explain to her where he's really been and how will she react to being deceived by someone she care so much for. Even if there was some reason for it.
I love these kind of anticipated moments. It makes you want to read to see that moment when two people see each other next after some dramatic moment. As a reader 'you' know the answer, but it's a thrill to wait and see how the character reacts.

You always lose the glasses part way through. lol

More like he should have known not to cross paths with the daughter of the deadliest assassin in the DCU! ;)

Somehow, I'm a Marvel person and the only two on going titles I'm reading is this and GCS. I liked the issue a lot and having limited information on what's happened in the comics in the past, I am finding it very easy to pick these titles up and read them. I think the art and story were great in this book. I can't really debate the 'I don't like Spoiler' part of it, but I'm sure things will unfold nicely just by reading this first issue.

Dig Deeper into Batgirl

Batgirl has been the alias of several different crime fighters, all of them having connections to Batman. The original "Bat-girl" was Bette Kane, then Barbara Gordon, followed by Helena Bertinelli, Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown. The current Batgirl is Barbara Gordon.
