There seems to be some debate over the idea of digital comics.  Personally, I think the idea of digital comics is a cool one.  I'm not saying we should do away with the printed media but why not try something different once in a while?  There's also the possibility of a difference in price since there's always been the argument of 'rising paper costs' which raises the cover price of comics.

Today it was announced that PSP owners in select countries will be able to read comics digitally.  One of the publishers on board with this is Marvel Comics.  In their announcement, it's stated that starting in December, you can get access to a huge library of comics.  Marvel has said that you will be able to download classic and select digital-first comics through the Playstation Store on your PSP.  You can read the comics page by page or panel by panel.

Isabelle Tomatis, European Marketing Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said:

This is a great new service that offers PSP owners even more options for entertainment on the go and makes PSP a must for comics fans.

Digital comics will sit alongside the new PlayStation®Network video download service as yet another way that PSP offers a whole world of entertainment in your hands.

Marvel Comics aren't the only ones you'll be able to download.  Joystiq.com also reported that Archie and Image Comics are on board with this.  I'm sure other publishers will follow as well.

Are you interested in digital comics?  Imagine how much easier it would be to organize your comics.  Or how many you could 'carry' with you.  I find it hard to believe that digital comics will replace the traditional format but you never know.  I think it's a great alternative but don't have any plans to ditch the printed medium.

i say this shold be intresting i know some people hate the idea that digital comics will take over paper but i wouldnt worry. those same people are whats gonna keep comics on paper. Digital is a way you can really take advantage of the fact that if you cant find a comic at your comic store to read youve got the digital app. paper comics have there advantages that digital does not have and vice versa.

I just saw this news as I was browsing Marvel's site.
I don't mind digital comics as a sort of archive. That way if someone is interested enough they can look back through the story. Lot easier and cheaper then trying to buy them.

I'm all for digitizing comics, but would prefer a larger format reader. Something along the size of a real comic, or maybe even a color Kindle. I still prefer the real deal, but it would be easier to distribute digitally, save on paper use, and would allow for large collections. You could have an entire series saved, allowing you to instantly flip to page 3 of issue 100 to find that one panel you thought was hilarious. Maybe even have some sort of bookmark system. And cross platform would be nice, but that's only if they standardize the digital format.

I don't like digital comics, but any addition to the medium is welcome.  Hope it doesn't effect printed comics.

I'd like to keep an open mind about digital comics, as I know that publishers who don't have the market share to compete will use this service to hopefully gain access to fans, without necessarily having to do battle head-to-head with Marvel and DC each week.

Part of the reason, however, why I buy the books in printed format is because I like to collect things.  Let's say you keep 100 Spider-Man comics in a box, wrapped and protected. You open that box and just kind of stare at the covers, taking in some of those good vibes all over again. Compare that to the same 100, but on the PSP through the digital service. I mean the content should be the same, but at least for me, I wouldn't get the same vibe. Something is missing when you can't hold the comic.

Right now I vote in favor of the service as an option, but I hope it won't become the standard format. I would miss being able to collect the comics and store them in a box. Seriously.

Digital books (Kindle) and comics seem like the wave of the future, but there's just something about buying a book and holding it in your hands. I guess if you collected comics of course you'd buy the books, however having digital copies you could read all the time without placing your books in harms way is a good feeling. Shoot, they just made more money! I'd probably buy a digital copy and another copy of the comic book.

@BangingBootyNurseT:
I think you're right, my buddy was talking about this already.
@pixelized: They're still VERY popular. In fact Sony just issued a very nice redesign and update. Also, though it was unvieled in 2004 it was not released state side till sometime around March 2005. It is still to this day the best selling non Nintendo handheld ever released.

I've done the same on my PS3. I would do the same with the PSP but there is only one analog stick.

still, people have been playing them in 2004, may not have been the general public, but they were in hands. It was more of a joke and less literal anyway, but alright.

And have you seen their handheled competition? It's either a DS or PSP, there isn't much of a win in there, but whatevs.
