DC gearing up to release two new graphic novels

If you were DC Comics, chances are that you probably would want to expand your audience by utilizing the two biggest names in comic books, right? According to The Source, DC will be releasing two new comics in a graphic novel format which will recount the storylines of Batman and Superman respectively.

SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE and BATMAN: EARTH ONE kick off an ongoing series of original graphic novels featuring “their first years and earliest moments retold in a standalone, original graphic novel format, on a new earth with an all-new continuity.”

SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE will be written by J. Michael Straczynski with art by Shane Davis, and BATMAN: EARTH ONE will be written by Geoff Johns with the art of Gary Frank.

The question remains, how many times will they re-tell the origin stories of these characters? Will a comic like this isolate fans of the characters, or will you be interested in re-reading their back stories? The good thing about this is the fact that DC will be publishing these books in a graphic novel format through Random House. This is a really good way for DC to expound on their franchises and reach new readers as well as re-tell the timeless origin stories of these characters.

In a recent interview with Aintitcoolnews.com, writer Geoff Johns ( Batman) and artist Shane Davis ( Superman) discussed their sentiments regarding the upcoming project.

“What I’m trying to do is to dig in to the character and look at him through modern eyes. If you were to create the Superman story today, for the first time, but keep intact all that works, what would it look like?”
“It is monumental for us as comic readers to see Superman birthed for the first time,” Davis said. “It’s a privilege to realize that you’re the artist that gets to draw it, better yet having the luxury to do it in an original graphic novel. This is going to be epic!”

Writer Geoff Johns also expressed his excitement regarding the upcoming project.

“BATMAN: EARTH ONE allows Gary and I to break the restraints of any continuity and focus on two things: character and story. Add to that the idea of working on a line of graphic novels instead of being limited to twenty-two pages, it’s a challenge and I love a challenge.”

If you ask me, though, all we have really seen lately is the retelling of Superman's origins. I would personally love to see DC take advantage of the fact that these stories will be set in an alternate universe and give readers new plot twists on stories that fans already know by heart.

It is summed up best with the quote " If you ask me, though, all we have really seen lately is the retelling of Superman's origins. I would personally love to see DC take advantage of the fact that these stories will be set in an alternate universe and give readers new plot twists on stories that fans already know by heart."

Show me a Batman I don't know.  Make Batman about a mantle that was handed down from one father to the next and Bruce Wayne is in a long line of Batman trying to live up to the family legacy.  Give me a new take on Superman... oh wait DC has been doing that for the past year :-(
johnny_spamon Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:11 a.m.

It really reminds me more of Joker by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo I think the fact that hey are original Graphic Novels means it will be more like JMS' take on Superman rather than another Superman origin. The Batman one really excites me as Geoff has said it will be a new take on Batman. The name Earth One makes me believe it is part of DC's Multiverse.

Is this supposed to be Ultimate DC?
Grendelon Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:13 a.m.
Ultimate DC is something I'm surprised hasn't happened years ago.

what's the difference between New Earth and Earth 1?
ElJuanoon Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:14 a.m.
I'm looking forward to this! Although they have already been doing this for years now, going to Alternate Earths to retell old stories with a new twists, my hope is that this version of Bats and Supes is actually worth something. 'Til now only a handful of elseworld stories are worth any of my time. The art looks very promising though!!

I am interested in this only thing is ..the price?
Toastalchemiston Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:16 a.m.
This looks like it'll be good. Batman looks steam punk.
johnny_spamon Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:18 a.m.
@danhimself:
New Earth is where the current DC comics stories take place it is called Earth Zero. Earth One is another place entirely.

Alfred's look reminds me of a real person I've seen who was an actor, but I can't think of who at the moment...
danhimselfon Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:23 a.m.
@johnny spam: I know that....that's why I asked what the difference was
Decept-Oon Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:24 a.m.

HHmmm...I'm kind of interested, but not quite certain yet.  I do like the art, and THAT is how Batman's costume should appear!!  If there won't be a Robin, then I'm down like a clown with a frown because I think a "modernization" of Supes and Bats in this "Earth One" format  is what DC desperately needs.

Yet, you do make a good point, Babs, and it may just be some more of the same ol' same ol', but I hope not.   I like Stracyznksi and Johns,  I think this has good potential.
burr787on Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:24 a.m.
I am so excited for this, I can't wait. I love Ultimate Marvel and have been dying to see DC finally do it.

EDIT: one minor complaint, they seem to be using Wizard's Ultimate Batman look. I love that look and hope that they add more detail to the new design.

Moomin123on Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:26 a.m.

This looks good. I wonder if they'll make a Green Lantern: Earth-One or a Flash: Earth One?
Knippenbergon Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:27 a.m.
The DC OGN's are meant to exist as their own separate entities, much like how the Superman movies are their own thing compared to any of the animated series, or tv shows. Same with Batman. They are also meant to reach a wider general audience, so they have to start at the beginning to establish tone, mood and status quo. And it may not be so much about the origin as JMS pointed out in the AICN interview, that the first Superman story is about a young Clark Kent in the big city of Metropolis on the verge of making a monumental decision of what comes next in his life (which will ultimately lead to becoming Superman). There will be flashbacks to his life in Smallville and how his parents shaped him into the man about to make that decision today.
johnny_spamon Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:28 a.m.
@danhimself:
Earth One may be the Silver Age or DCU before the first Crisis. But apparently from the images shown might have a new take on Batman.
Dr. Maxwellon Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:29 a.m.
I wasnt too sure about this till I read that Geoff Jones will be doing the batman book, and that its out of continuity. Should be a good read. Although, personally I don't think you can better Year One story than Batman: Year One
Gennadiuson Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:29 a.m.

to me this looks like a good idea i mean alot of people wanted to read batman comics after playing arkham asylum but there where so much things going on and alot of new character so im really excited for this (the batman version cus i dont really like superman)
waruikumoon Dec. 7, 2009 at 11:32 a.m.
yay graphic novels instead of trickle out mini series.   I will buy these def.  Although if they were in Mini series format, trickle out style, i would avoid like the plague (see Re: Superman Secret Origin)

yay

ALso re: comic book characters, gimmick-y Tattoos are so 1990's, I dont know how i feel about the Alfred one, unless hes like ex SAS and SAS guys get that tattoo.  But seriously dont go down that road.  I mean Look at Daken, hes already dated by a Tribal tattoo that has as little meaning to him as it does to some Frat boy mook that has the same thing.
