If you've been following the battle of the digital readers, then you may have heard a few weeks back that after DC announced they would be selling their graphic novels exclusively on Amazon and the Amazon Kindle Fire, Barnes and Noble bookstores stripped their shelves of DC graphic novels; refusing to sell them at their stores. This was due to the fact that the Barnes and Noble NOOK competes directly with the Amazon Kindle Fire. Now, DC and Amazon are teaming up to expand their venture.
Earlier today DC Comics and Amazon launched an all new DC Comics storefront on Amazon.com, showcasing the collection of DC graphic novels available for purchase on the site in both digital format as well as the print copies. Among the many books currently up for grabs are some of DC's best-selling graphic novels including WATCHMEN, SANDMAN, All-STAR SUPERMAN and many more.
In a recent interview, DC's Senior Vice President of Digital Hank Kanalz was asked whether or not the publisher would be making the comics available digitally on other platforms as well, and was questioned about when the exclusivity of the deal would be up so that these books would become available on devices such as the NOOK. Kanalz avoided the question drawing the focus back to the Kindle Fire, but stated that he looks forward to moving "forward with as many different partners as possible."
We're in constant communication to expand onto other devices. There's nothing we can talk about today as we want to keep it to Amazon, obviously. Our goal for today is to have our material available on as many devices as possible. Out backlist is so extensive – we have thousands of books – that we have a lot to and a long road ahead of us, and we want to move forward with as many different partners as possible.
It will be interesting to see how long this deal remains exclusive to the Kindle Fire, but I guess we will have to wait and see. What do you think of the new DC Comics Amazon storefront? Overall, do you think this is a wise business decision for DC Comics? What do you think of the exclusivity of the partnership? Do you look forward to being able to read many of DC's best-selling graphic novels on multiple platforms and devices? Check out the full list of available graphic novels below.
