In April of 2009, Syfy channel released this DVD, Caprica. It takes place in the Battlestar Galactica universe, and it is set roughly 60 years before the Cylon attack on earth. The feature-length movie dealt with loss, love, theism, and the creation of the race that would ultimately destroy the 13 colonies. Recently, Syfy Channel released the newest trailer for the new Caprica series, which is set to air in January, 2010.

If you haven't seen the original movie, then this trailer may seem a little misleading. It seems like the CW cut it together. The music is a little cheesy, and it only seems to deal with the loss and love aspect of the show, but not the two other main themes. However, when it comes to spin-offs, it's very hard for the actual spin-off show to break free from the shadow of the original show. In the back of your mind, you're always thinking, "Is this better than the original?" We will figure this all out on Friday, Jan 22, 9/8c on the Syfy network.

Really hope this isn't going to be heavy handed soap opera. Got to say (well I don't but you know what I mean) this trailer doesn't exactly grab me by the short and curlies and demand me watch the show when it does come out. I stuck with Battlestar Galactica and felt it well worth the effort with the finale.

Havn't seen the movie but i've heard good things. I agree with welshguy, BSG had some dull moments but it was worth it  to stick with the show.

Love this image BTW

I guess I haven't had cable for a few months, cause I definitely don't remember The Sci Fi Channel being spelled syfy. I don't like that.

I loved loved loved BSG.  There were a couple episodes that broke from the overall story arc and they did suck.  But overall the show was excellent.

I saw Caprica the movie and think that the TV show is going to be great.

I was pretty mad when I watched the Caprica film last April and at the end of the DVD the announced the series... coming in Jan 2010... I hate when they make me wait.

@inferiorego: yeah I was pissed too about having to wait.  Got used to waiting as far as BSG is concerned though.. they always had weird long breaks.

I was shocked how explicit the Caprica movie was... nudity!  I assume the TV show wont be able to have that in it.

@danhimself: I want more straight-to-dvd BSG films. They have all (all two of them) been awesome.

@inferiorego:  agreed...I don't know if there's much story potential but I'd like to see some stuff about what happens to them after they get to earth or about the Cylon Centurions who left to go out on their own

The Cylon Centurions story would be awesome

@inferiorego:  have you watched any episodes of Stargate Universe?  I've never watched any Stargate stuff before but this new series is pretty good....it's got a BSG feel to it

I'm kinda done with this one, I have some interest in the Franchise but not much

the dark spooky Xfiles was great,
the V series in the 80s looked cool,
orginal Star Trek rocked,
Marvel and DC cartoons are epic
but original Battlestar just sucked  and the new one went off the tracks

Old BSG was nothing to be joyful about, camp, old, a little potential like Lost in Space or Knight Rider but its mostly out dated.
Then came the Battlestar remake for the new century and I think for a while this new battlestar was very well written. I liked where it was going and it entertained me
 but then something went wrong.

Its not just me who says it, many other fans say it and you can look at the tv ratings. Look at the decline of the quality of new battlestar, the show was not consistent. I would strongly recommend against purchasing it. The show lost fans and past mid season 2 or Season 3 a lot of people became disenchanted and walked away. It also got dark, not like comparisons to Lost and 24 work but really dark and political when you think about the dark tone of the shows, it also became less scifi and more soap opera
I would like to see the new BSG story redone, given a proper ending and not this find Earth, blame God religious nonsense.

Caprica might be ok but I would have preferred the people did a better season of BSG
The problem with Caprica is it seems to be too drama driven, like StarWars prequels there is something just so utterly pointless about the Caprica idea.  We know where they came from, we already all know how it will end. The plos have already been set, there is no more big revelation I believe to keep that series interesting. What would that have to bait us to watch about a dead and decaying civilization? Why watch when we already know Vader is Luke's Daddy? Caprica is a half breed of 2 previously canceled shows.
Remi Aubuchon  pitched the concept of an allegorical story about slavery with robots that had nothing to do with BSG and Universal got him canceled, then RDM pitched a BSG spin off but the Battlestar ratings were going into the toilet. So NBC Syfy channel had the idea to join Remi together with RDM and Eick (who were considering a BSG spinoff series of their own) and "Caprica" was born.

Will it work? Will it be a hit? Will it stink and be a Turkey?

The jury is still out
