Cable Returns This December In 'Avengers: X-Sanction'

Marvel reveals their plans for Cable's return in an all new four-issue mini series starting later this year.

As you know, in comics, nothing lasts forever -- not even death. When fans witnessed the death of Cable during 'Second Coming' they knew that it wouldn't be the end of the line for time traveling hero. During Marvel's live panel earlier today, writer Jeph Loeb revealed that Cable would see his return in Marvel's upcoming four-issue mini series launching this December titled Avengers: X-Sanction.

Marvel's live blog which set the stage for the big reveal featured Marvel writer Jeph Loeb, artist Ed McGuinness and Marvel VP Tom Brevoort. The discussion focused on a topic that was initially teased at San Diego Comic-Con as the 'Cable Reborn " event.

The discussion started off with Jeph Loeb who reveled his affection for Cable, going so far as to cite that Cable was the first ongoing (monthly) book that Loeb worked on when he was first signed on to Marvel in the 90's. According to Loeb, Cable is the 'Captain America of the X-Men.'

"I always saw Cable as very much the Captain America of the X-Men. A soldier from out of time who cared deeply for the people he worked with."

The return of Cable is actually a pretty big deal for X-Men fans, but the fact that Cable's return will appear in an Avengers title is a little bit...well, different. According to the creative team, Avengers: X-Sanction will explain just how Cable managed to survive Second Coming and (if you couldn't tell from the title) would potentially be pitting Cable against some of the Avengers. Marvel VP Tom Brevoort delves into the kinds of people Cable would be up against.

"This story puts Cable in a situation where he's surrounded by and dealing with characters he doesn't normally. It's not just another story with Cable and the X-Men. The idea of Cable as a man out to protect his daughter by any means necessary gives the character an emotional heft and underlines everything he does. It's richly fulfilling."

Next to Cable's return to comics, the second most exciting news to come out of the announcement is the fact that this four-issue mini series will coincide with the events of Schism and Fear Itself, according to Brevoort.

"As we've said, it's not a coincidence that Fear Itself, Schism, and other big stories end at the same time. This is the first brick in the next road. Cable knows he's coming to battle the Avengers, so he comes loaded for bear, with the specific gear he needs." -Tom Brevoort

Evidently, 'Avengers: X-Sanction' will be the first step towards the Marvel events of 2012. Big surprise. What do you think about the news of Cable's return? Are you looking forward to 'Avengers: X-Sanction' by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness? Lastly, Deadpool fans take note: the "Merc with a mouth" will be appearing in the series.
