Is the show really in danger?

Is the show a bomb now?
Is the show a bomb now?
Yesterday I mentioned the firing of exec-producers Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander.  Part of the reason for that was to cut on costs.  It seems that because there is such a huge cast and all the special FXs used, Heroes has become a costly show.  Each episode is costing the network over $4 million.  Since Loeb and Alexander have been with the show since the first season, you can imagine what their salaries must have been.

As far as the ratings go, each episode seems to be getting just over 10 million viewers each week.  Variety reports that this is down 21%.  Someone mentioned in the forums that maybe this drop is because some people like to wait until the DVDs to watch the episodes in one sitting.  This could be a factor.  I also say that because the last season ended in December, some viewers might have lost interest in the nine months in between.

Some insiders feel that Tim Kring gave too much responsiblity to other writers (like Loeb and Alexander) but he plans on dealing with that.
Kring has assured NBC and Universal Media Studios brass that he intends to focus on simplifying what's been criticized, even by ardent fans, as an overly complex storytelling structure to get back to the show's comicbookish good vs. evil themes and to emphasize character development more than plot twists.

I've been liking this season for the most part.  I do agree that there are a couple storylines that could be tweaked out.  It sometimes feel things are dragging on just a little bit.  Where as I find it a little interesting seeing Claire trying to take on the baddies on her own, do we really need long drawn out sequences dealing with it?  That could be an example of a subplot that isn't really necessary.  Plus, she should still be in school.  It's cool seeing the different powered bad guys but that's probably adding to the budget for each episode.

What do you think?  Is the show in danger?  Could this lead into Heroes getting canceled after this season?  I guess you better make sure you and your friends are watching.

it has been a bit much lately. season one was awesome. but i didnt like season two that much. i dunno about season three.

i am liking season three so far, but it seems a big overwhelming. there are a lot of characters and storylines that don't seem to be heading anywhere. season one brought everything together, and i hope season three does the same. ill stick in there for now. i think it will get better. :)

There does seem to be a bit of craziness.  It is almost too much.  It's like "let's make everyone do a complete 360 to mess with all the viewers."  I mean look at Sylar.  Interesting but almost seems their pushing it too far or trying too hard.  I personally couldn't care less about Mohinder's storyline.  He's keeps acting like an idiot.  First working with the Company and then injecting himself.  No wonder Maya left him (for good, hopefully since she hasn't added much to the show).

It seems like they're trying too much to be a Big Action Movie rather than telling a story. If the newer Star Wars taught us anything, better effect doesn't always equal better stories.

as one of those that was waiting for more Sylar, i am enjoying this season.  im just hoping that Suresh goes away and Peter stops beeing such a milksop.  Sheesh, second most powerful regular character on the show and he's a total weenie. Hopefully he mans up in time to help his baby brother take out daddy

I think they should bring back Micah, keep characters like Ando, Peter, Hiro, Noah, Sylar and Matt, and keep to the story now and just make a new start at the end of the season.

Get rid of some characters, Mohinder for one, Claire's mum, the Ice girl with dead sisters - never liked her anyway.

BRING BACK ADAM! He was a good character! And actor!

The story I dislike the most is the Mohinder storyline, I liked him much better when he was a normal protector trying to avenge his father's death, I'm really not used to the Spider-Moh...

As an ardent fan during the first season, it has been very hard to see it go downhill this much, and I can see why the studio is nervous.

To me, the constant switching around of good and bad has meant that you can't identify with a character, since you now they will just turn the other way next week.  To make it worse, many of the actors don't have the range to constantly switch between good, bad and conflicted.   Even with great actors, I don't think there is anyone who could portray the complete mental breakdown of living in a world where you never know up from down or friend from foe.  Then throw in the constant messing with timelines.

They need to stop messing with time and gradually get rid of characters (or at least their powers) that are way too powerful (Peter, Sylar, and maybe their dad).  You sit their wondering why Peter doesn't just fix all that is wrong in the world.

There is way too much going on in this season. There is a team of villians being created, Sylar has given into Rehab just becasue Angela told him she was his mother, The cheerleader is an assassin, Mohinder is a psychpath, and there's another woman walking around by the name of Barbara, that we have yet to see. Hopefully this season, gets it back together. Becasue they lost me when they brought back Mr. Patrelli and took away Peter's powers. What the Heck?
