Babs reviews the latest issue

'Batman and Robin' #4
Written by Grant Morrison
Art by Philip Tan

Who knew comic books could read like poetry? If you have been reading Grant Morrison's run on 'Batman and Robin,' then you probably know what I am talking about. I will be the first to admit that when it comes to Morrison's books, I often find myself re-reading them to ensure that I've managed to capture all of the facets and intricacies of his plot-line and characters. With Morrison, there is usually an incredible story that lies beneath the surface, and this book is a perfect example of that. While issue four has a lot of plot development, there is an evident focus on 'Scarlett's' character and an array of emotions that the character is obviously subjecting herself to. It was evident that she had become psychologically tormented and may perhaps be going insane. I don't blame her, I would probably be a bit messed up myself if someone replaced my face with a mask! Her motivation for being a side-kick to a psychotic vigilante likens to penance for the death of her father. Scarlett has his blood on her hands, and in order to right her wrongs, she resolves to vigilantism; fighting against the bad guys and often subjecting them to her own style of justice- death. Morrison captures the essence of this lost, psychologically deteriorating young girl in his language. The literary eloquence coupled by Philp Tan's dark expressions and scenery is nothing short of phenomenal. Quickly, the reader might recognize that Scarlett is a mere victim of her circumstances and surroundings, and her motivation to fight crime differs greatly from that of the 'Red Hood.'

There is a tremendous amount of balance in this story. So much so that it seems cyclical; in that it comes completely full circle based on the events in the beginning and in the end. There are three elements which the story begins and ends with. First is the element of death. The first scene shows Scarlett and Red Hood killing a masked criminal. The final scene ends in the same way. The 'Red Hood's' "motto" 'let the punishment fit the crime' surfaces on more than one occasion and is also a staple in the language at both the beginning and the end of the book.

I have my theories on the identity of the 'Red Hood,' and I feel as though now would be the perfect time to delve into that; however, If you have not read the issue, do not read further.

This is by far one of the best comics I have read these last few weeks, and I highly recommend this series.

Thought that Tan's work made a great transition from Quitely. Me being Scottish, I'm a bit upset that the two Scotsman are no longer working on it (I see it as our claim to fame haha) however I was really chuffed with this issue. Will miss Quitely but look forward to seeing what Tan does with this.

First of all, I want the spoiler warning tag for Giant Bomb. Would make my days moderating there amazingly easier :P

Secondly I agree with the spoiler, it seems well concocted in regards to the Red Hood's identity. Brilliant issue with some brilliant interaction between characters. Although I'm more inclined to say I'd like to see more of Dick and Damian interacting together. Is it just me or does Damian seem like once he's grown up he'll be a force to be reckoned with?

I half agree with the spoiler theory. While I would like nothing better than for that to happen, it does seem a little anti-climatic. However, I do like the new take on 'Hood, and his partner. Scarlett makes for an interesting counter-part to Damian

Also, digging the old school mask the RH is wearing.....kinda puts it in your head that maybe, just maybe, someone else is under the hood.

Isn't this Hood just obviously the guy Dick met at the party?

Or is he just a "red" herring?

when Dick hears the Red Hood he says the <name> with a question mark. Makes me think either a) he's not sure it's that person or b) he can't believe its that person. Either way I'm leaning towards it NOT being that person as Dick's gut was to question the identity even as he spoke the name.

A side note: I noticed this title was not in the December solicits. Is it a planned skip month?

@_brandon: I wasn't under the impression that it was, and I really hope not, but let me double check!

I liked this issue allot it was a great setup for the next couple of issues since it's suppose to last a year I can imagine there is more to this issue then at first glance. The art was beautiful I don't understand why people give Philip Tan's art crap it looks great Red Hood looks like a whole new character compared to how he looked when Quitely    drew him.

I believe the most obvious choice for the Red Hood actually is, I've read several interviews with Morrison claiming how much he loved the character and how he wanted to use him a lot in this series. but anyways I'm really impressed with this book, it's amazingly good

Red Hood strikes me as sort of an odd name when you consider that he doesn't seem to even be wearing a red hood, but a dome over his head, ala Mr. Freeze.

unfortunately the spoiler section is a little pointless when you have a certain character's name in the tags below :-(

It's to obvious Jason Todd being Red Hood.  He came back as Red Hood, It would be lame of Morrison to have him become Red Hood again.  Morrison isn't that unoriginal, but you never know.

I would have thought the same thing, had I not read an interview with Morrison declaring his love for todd, and the fact that he wants to use him alottt
