Overview You've never seen a Cinderella story like this one! In search of a husband for Princess Gwendolyn, a costume ball is thrown for the suitable young men of the Kingdom, but when the mysterious Spider Prince arrives, that's when the trouble begins. Who is this noble knight no one has ever heard of? What grudge do the soldiers in the Goblin Brigade hold against him? And just why does this dashing Spider Prince need to depart before midnight? Will he fall victim to a pumpkin bomb? Once upon a time, a family of knights fought bravely. This family was the Parkers. During one battle, Ben Parker was stabbed by a sword. His brother Richard tried to go to him, only to get shot numerous times by arrows. With both Parkers dying, Richard was concerned with who would raise his son, Peter and be a mentor to him. Another knight was near by, Norman Osborn. Even though many felt Osborn was a demon, Richard felt he was an honorable man. With his dying breath, he asked Norman if he would raise his son. Norman promised that Peter would always have a place in his home. Years later, it is seen that Peter's place is basically that of a servant. Using a broom, Peter would practice being a knight in private. He wishes he could get out of the Osborn house and that his father and uncle were still alive. His only true friend is a fellow servant, Mary Jane. As Peter and Mary Jane talk, an enraged Norman storms in demanding that Mary Jane polish his and Harry's armor until she can see her reflection in them. He says that Harry's big day is coming and he has to look his best. Mary Jane is sad because she already has so much other work to do. Peter, being the friend that he is, offers to help her polish them. Peter soon finds out why the knights hate polishing their own armor. He also finds out that the King is having a ball next Saturday. He has decided it is time that Princess Gwendolyn finds a suitable knight to marry her. Norman wants nothing else but for Harry to be the chosen one. Peter is ecstatic to hear about the ball. He figures this is his chance to be with Gwen. He asks Mary Jane if she knows of any way to get him in. She refuses, not wanting to get into any further trouble. Peter continues to beg her asking how would he ever get another chance to meet the perfect girl. Visiting his father's and uncle's tomb down below, he ponders over how he can fulfill his dreams. Seeing a spider spinning a web between the two tombs, Peter decides to create his own armor. He works hard creating an armor with the symbol of a spider. The night of the ball, Norman tells Peter that he has given the staff the night off except for him. Peter has to pick up the slack and is ordered to clean out the stables before they return at midnight. Saddened over losing his opportunity to secretly go to the ball, it is now Mary Jane's turn to come to his rescue. She offers to work the stable so he can join the rest of the staff and get his mind off of Gwen. At the palace, Gwen is not happy with her father. She is not too keen on the same old crowd being at the ball. She doesn't think it's possible for her true love to simply walk through the front door. At that exact moment, the "Prince of Arachne" is announced. Peter walks straight for Gwen, much to Norman's dismay. Kneeling before Princess Gwen, Peter introduces himself. She asks for him to remove his helmet but tells her that the laws of his land prohibit him from doing so until he shares a dance with the woman asking. Charmed, they soon hit the dance floor. Hours pass and Peter soon discovers that midnight is approaching. Having no choice, Peter must flee immediately. Gwen tries to stop him since she doesn't even know his name. All she manages to get is one of his webbed brassards. A royal decree goes out requesting any information on he who has the matching brassard. Norman sees this as an opportunity for Harry to still marry Gwen. He figures they need to find and kill the real person so that Harry can stand in his place. Peter overhears this entire conversation. In Peter's room, Mary Jane decides to help him clean the place up. Seeing something hiding in his mattress, she uncovers his spider-armor. She now knows that he is the one that the King is searching for. Peter walks in and says he needs to destroy the armor. Mary Jane tells him this is his chance. The princess fell in love with him so he needs to go to her. Peter says it's impossible since he's not even a real knight. Mary Jane says it doesn't matter. If Gwen found out the truth, she'd just fall in love with him all over again. Now seeing that Mary Jane must have some sort of feelings for him, they are interrupted by Harry. He takes the piece of armor and says Peter will suffer his father's wraith when he finds out. Mary Jane tells Peter to quickly go to the Princess before Harry can get there. He has to be a knight and save the Princess. Harry and Norman arrive only to find that Peter has beat them there and told them the truth. The King has decided to allow Gwen to choose Peter, despite whatever his story was. Norman will not stand for this and raises his sword to strike him. Peter manages to block Osborn's sword with on of his own. The two begin to fight as the King orders his men to stop Osborn. Norman tries striking Peter but he manages to duck the blow. The blade then cuts a rope holding up a chandelier. The chandelier is about to land on Peter but Gwen manages to push him away. Norman stands in shock over having killed the Princess. Outraged, Peter approaches Norman and tells him that he's suffered his whole life because of him. It ends now. Norma lies dead also. Harry screams vengeance against Parker. The entire kingdom mourns the loss of their Princess. It is accepted that she had chosen to marry Peter and he is allowed to become their new Prince. He is knighted and the spider becomes a symbol of honor and justice. Peter stands over the people, still feeling sadness. Little did he realize that Gwen was not the only love that Peter lost. Mary Jane lies alone with Peter's brassard, dreaming of her knight in shining armor. (Los Angeles, California - Wednesday, September 12) That's just the group. Mickey reflects on her tense relationship with Chris, and how she feels guilty for dating someone with powers. Mickey feels the urge to put on her old costume, take to the skies and leave all her stress behind for an afternoon in the clouds. It's tempting, but she knows that she can't give in. She is going to keep her feet planted firmly on the ground. Life is all about balance, and Mickey is the only one who has to make sure it's maintained. Otherwise, Excelsior might just spiral out of control... (Holy Trinity Church; Excelsior meeting) A girl steps into the room. Her appearance makes her look as young as Julie. Around her wrist is a metallic band, where a glowing red lazer-like knife is pointed out. The knife retracts into the band and the girl helps Mickey up. Mickey thanks her and asks who she is, but the girl says that she doesn't know. At this point, Chris awakens and warns the girl to get away from Mickey, but Mickey defends her by pointing out that she is the one who took down Nekra. She is one of the good guys. Mattie, Julie, Johnny and Phil awaken, just in time to see Chris apologize to Mickey for changing into Darkhawk. Mickey tells him never to worry about her, and she kisses him, exposing their relationship. Mattie stares at them in disbelief. Johnny is surprised but Julie smugly tells him that she knew. Phil, however, stares in maniacal anger. His eyes clench, and fury sweeps through him. Phil storms out the room. Julie wonder's what is wrong with him, but Mattie believes that it's because he got kicked by Nekra. Johnny yelps in shock - he recognizes the girl who rescued Mickey. He saw her in the Fujikawa lab; she was one of the women in the tubes. Mickey, once again, defends the girl. She also adds that Chris should turn back into Darkhawk; Nekra is still breathing. Johnny insists that the girl was one of the women in the tubes and the girl does not deny it. In fact, she mentions that she remembers seeing Johnny and Julie there, and saw them running away after Julie was attacked. The girl must have... escaped shortly after. Mickey is now confused. She asks the girl if she escaped or was released. The girl lowers her head and says she can't remember. Mickey asks how the girl found them, and how can she use the energy blade from her wrist. The girl's voice breaks as she reveals she doesn't know. All she did was walk in, see that Mickey was in trouble, and the blade was just there. It's as if part of her memory has been wiped clean. All she knows is her name... Namie. Namie raises her head and slowly starts weeping as she begs them to help her. Mattie however rolls her eyes and doesn't trust Namie, mainly because she and Nekra's "evil-sounding" names both start's with 'N'. Besides, both of them showing up is a bit too coincidental. And they both seem to connect to the Fujikawa woman that Mickey made a deal with. A deal the rest of them know nothing about. Mickey tells Mattie to mind her business. Mattie pressures Mickey into telling her about the deal, though Mickey tells her she has to trust her on it. At the same time, police sirens blare through the church. Mattie mentions that they couldn't destroy a church and not expect someone to notice. Darkhawk is glad; S.H.I.E.L.D. can now deal with Nekra. Julie becomes desperate to leave, but Johnny tells her not to worry; they are all registered. Julie becomes flustered... she reminds the group about how she was explaining about her lies and finally coming clean. Julie finally admits she is not registered. Predictably, the rest of the room explodes with anger. Mickey snaps, Mattie makes a sarcastic remark, but Darkhawk is enraged. They've been harboring a fugitive, and she could have landed all of them in jail. Johnny defends Julie, and advises her to leave immediately. She should also take Namie with her, since none of them are ready to answer any of those questions. Again, Mattie tells the group she does not trust Namie. Mickey isn't sure either, but she did save her life - that counts for something. Darkhawk adds they don't have any other choice. Mickey tells Julie and Namie to leave while they get it sorted out with the cops; the two of them, however, are not of the hook. Julie picks up Namie and leaves... but not before telling Namie she is a lot heavier than she looks. (In-and-Out Burger) (The apartment of Phil Urich) (The apartment of Johnny Gallo) (Shortly after) (The apartment of Mickey Musashi) Chris wraps his arms around her and tells her to stop. So she got a little shaken; she'll bounce back. But Mickey bitterly notes how they will bounce back. Fly back. And crawl back. Lucky them. Chris tells her she is the lucky one; she said it herself. Her powers came from her costume. So the costume is Turbo, not her. There were other Turbos before her, right? Mickey has the option of giving away her costume to someone else... she can walk away clean, start living a normal life again. That's a choice she can still make. A choice none of the rest of them have... but Mickey, disgusted, slaps Chris right across the face and calls him a hypocrite. Jabbing him in the chest, she tells him to take off the amulet. Rubbing his face, Chris is shocked. Mickey tells him to take off the Darkhawk amulet; it isn't melded to his chest. He can choose to take it off. So why doesn't he? Chris tells her she knows he can't. Mickey begins yelling at him; "can't, or won't?" Chris should practice what he preaches. Take off the amulet. Give it all up. Walk away. Fingering the amulet, Chris tells Mickey he can't do it. Darkhawk is a part of who he is. Is that what she wanted to hear? And Mickey reveals that right there is what this is all about. Before she can continue with her tirade, the doorbell rings. As Mickey walks towards the door, she tells Chris not to think it's over just because everyone else is coming over. Chris tells her that as soon as everyone leaves, he wants to... but Mickey interrupts him, and tells him that their issue is about to become a group discussion. Opening the door, she finds Phil and Hollow. Phil is hiding his eyes, and has a hat lowered over his face. Mickey checks the halls and berates Phil for bringing Hollow in broad daylight. Phil storms into her apartment and tells her that he doesn't care. Some of them aren't afraid to hide what they truly are anymore. Grabbing him, she asks what the hell that is supposed to mean. If he has something to say, he should at least have the stones to say it to her face. Phil agrees, turns, and grabs Mickey by the throat. Phil mocks Mickey, and notes how she gets all fired up now that her boyfriend is here to protect her. His power has her blood pumping up, doesn't it? Mickey throws him off her and asks what the hell is wrong with him. Phil's glasses fall off, revealing his vivid red eyes. Phil roars at Mickey and tells her that she is the one with the problem. They had a plan! Doesn't she remember? He got her a job at the Times and they were going to change the world. Put their pasts as teen super heroes behind them and start together. Together! They could do more good with their education than with their costumes. Isn't that what she had said? They were perfect for each other. But she couldn't keep her hand out of the cookie jar, could she. She had to go back for a little taste. Phil, breathing heavily, tells her that is why she really wanted to start the group. She needed to surround herself with people with powers to feel better about herself. And poor old normal Phil Urich just wasn't good enough for her, was he. Mickey tells Phil he's got it all wrong... they were friends, but she never felt that way about him. Phil slams his hand on a table, ordering Mickey not to lie to him. She used him, like she's using them. He loved her, but she led him on, making him believe they were alive when she really wanted to be just like the rest of them. But it's cool. Mickey wants power? Phil knows what to do to have her. He picks up a glass vase of flowers. Chris warns Phil to shut up, but Phil throws the vase at Chris' face, knocking him out. Mickey screams while Hollow hisses, but Phil knows exactly what to do. He knows that Mickey isn't a "stop and smell the roses" kind of girl. He sees that now. She wants a guy who is willing to take matters into his own hands... and seize power for himself. With that, Phil rips the front of Chris' shirt and steals the Darkhawk amulet. Activating it, Phil stands before Mickey in the Darkhawk armor, laughing the maniacal laugh of a Green Goblin. Notes: Nekra says, "No Powers, No Problems." There is a scene in Runaways (2nd series) #10 when Chase is speaking with Nico and says, "Mo' Powers, Mo' Problems." This appears to be a reference to the Notorious B.I.G. song, "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems," from the album Life After Death (1997). Mattie says "Namie and Nekra?! I'll take "evil sounding names that start with 'N' please, Alex." This is a reference to the popular quiz show, Jeopardy, whose host since 1984 has been Alex Trebek. Namie is revealed next issue to be a new Red Ronin model. It is hinted at this issue when Julie says, "You're a lot heavier than you look." Mattie calls Mr. St. Commons on the phone. He is Dusk's father. It appears that Mattie is looking for her. Dusk herself appears as a shadow on Johnny's wall. Characters: Darkhawk, Dusk, Hollow, Julie Power, Mattie Franklin, Nekra, Phil Urich, Red Ronin, Ricochet, Turbo Teams: Loners Creators: Beth Sotelo, C.B. She tells her that they will be getting a new "roommate" as a visiting professor will be staying there. Heading to a pay phone, Cassie has arranged to receive a call from her mother at a set time. It turns out her mother bought a cell phone which concerns Cassie. She is concerned with how she paid for the phone and what name she used. She has been staying in Greece and says having a cell phone would make it easier to contact her. Cassie says she should just call the Titans Tower but her mom says she's never there anymore. Overview Don't miss this important prologue to an event that will rock the world's first and best super-team! In this issue, a fight between Wildcat and Wildcat; a firehouse pancake breakfast; Power Girl's quest to unlock the secret's behind her cousin's death; Citizen Steel's new family and the fate of Starman! And that's just the beginning as we prepare the Justice Society for their newest and most surprising member to date... Power Girl dreams about the death of Kal-L. She is still saddened at his death during the Infinite Crisis. While visiting his grave (still in the dream), Kal-L tries to claw his way out. Power Girl wakes up and feels it wasn't just a dream but rather a premonition. She still misses him and hopes that someday, Superman will return. Later in Brooklyn, the Justice Society are at the Fire Department for a charity event. They are serving a pancake breakfast for everyone. Citizen Steel is stuck in the kitchen with his nephew and friends making the pancakes. He compares trying to cook with kids to fighting Nazis. Soon it is time for the main event. Wildcat vs Wildcat. Ted and his son, Tommy are set for a boxing match. Tommy isn't too keen on the idea of fighting but Ted reminds him it's for charity. Ted quickly begins knocking Tommy around, despite Tommy's quickness and agility. He mentions that his tail is telling him what move he is going to make next. At the end of the first round, Ted is clearly ahead. The fight has to be stopped when the fire alarm goes off. The JSA agree to go and help out. There is a five-alarm fire at an old paint factory. Some firefighters have gotten trapped inside. Power Girl tells Citizen Steel he has to wait outside because of his steel costume. It will get too hot for others to touch. Tommy can smell the fighters and they work their way inside. To their surprise, they find a dead body with a hole blasted through it. Damage and Liberty Belle recognize the body as that of a villain named Goth. They had an encounter with him a few years ago. He claimed to be a demon of sorts. Power Girl notices that the fire is coming from inside Goth's body. Alan Scott cannot use his ring to grab the body. Somehow the fire is having an affect on it. He does note that the power that Goth possessed is about to erupt. Power Girl tells him to step aside as she moves to pull his body out of there. Alan quickly warns her to stay back because her skin is starting to burn from the flames. Now Starman steps forward. He says he can make the body disappear. His Legion ring allows him to survive the coldness of space and the heat of the sun so he should be able to approach the body. He says that he can create a black hole to throw the body in. Power Girl asks if he's ever created one before. Starman says he hasn't but knows that he can. No one is sure whether or not the crazy Starman can actually do it. Overview It's crisis time as Spider-Girl realizes that Carnage will only be stopped if she destroys someone she truly loves! Spider-Girl finds herself face-to-face with the new Kid Carnage, otherwise known as her little brother. Carnage sits back, marveling in his brilliant idea to infect the youngest Parker. Inside, Moose, continues to try to fight Carnage. He mentions that it's wrong to let a child commit murder. Carnage agrees that they shouldn't let the child have all the fun and begins to attack Spider-Girl again. Moose lets out a warning which comes as a surprise to Spider-Girl. As she dodges the attack, her cell phone goes off. She can't answer the phone and isn't sure how to fight without hurting her little brother. Benjy has no qualms about hurting her and takes a chomp at her shoulder. In Forest Hills, Peter is trying to call May after having escaped from Carnage. He wants her to know that Carnage is still on the loose. Mary Jane says that she may already know that. Spider-Girl wraps her little brother in webbing and takes off. Carnage simply follows and they soon come across Agent Hill and her team. They begin to attack Spider-Girl while Carnage attacks them. Spider-Girl manages to save an agent who, in return, tries to arrest her. This is interupted by Kid Carnage, trying to attack her once again. The fight continues. Kid Carnage gets knocked back and Spider-Girl jumps and saves him before he can smash into a wall. He thanks her by slashing at her arms. Carnage has taken out the others and Spider-Girl lies on a rooftop. As Carnage and Kid Carnage move in on her, she gets an idea to try to reach Moose. She tells him that the goverment has been researching Carnage for years. Carnage replies that they saw him as a bio-weapon. Spider-Girl says that there's also a chance that he could be a cure for cancer. Surprised, Moose tells Carnage that if they can go and help his dying father, he will give in completely to Carnage. Becoming one is what Carnage would love. He agrees. Finally given a moment to catch her breath, Spider-Girl's cell phone goes off again. Peter asks her about Benjy. May doesn't exactly tell him the truth. She asks him to go into the police property room to get an item that will help. As Peter heads to the police station, Spider-Girl goes to the hospital. Meanwhile, Kaine and Darkdevil crash a SHIELD safehouse with the rogue agents and the Contessa. She denies having any knowledge of Specimen 297. Kaine manages to help her see that all the other specimens need to be destroyed to save the U.S. embarrassment with the U.N. for having a deadly bio-weapon. Carnage arrives at the hospital where Courtney and Moose's cousin are. Even though Carnage said he'd hold back on the violence, he shakes off the guards that come towards him. Seeing Courtney, he thinks how lovely it would be to have a taste of her. Spider-Girl arrives in time to prevent anything happening to Courtney. Next Peter arrives wearing the Reverb armor (from issue #2). The sonic blasts are the only thing that can stop Carnage. Seeing Kid Carnage, Peter can't use the armor out of fear of injuring Benjy. Kid Carnage simply leaps towards him and Spider-Girl has to push him out of the way. She grabs a gauntlet and uses it on her brother, hoping it will not injure him. Ben is left crying on the floor and blood is dripping out of his ears. Carnage finds Moose's father. Moose tells him to do his thing to save his dad. Carnage asks how does he know that Moose will honor his agreement. Before there can be an answer, Spider-Girl blasts him in the back with a sonic wave. Moose is angered that Carnage has been destroyed before his father could be saved. He yells at Spider-Girl that she is no better than Carnage. Carnage was his only hope. He tells her he hates her. A doctor checks out Benjy. He says he can't tell if the hearing loss will be permanent. Maria Hill calls Nick Fury and tells him that Specimen 297 has been destroyed. Nick says it's not too often that they get a happy ending. Spider-Girl walks off alone. Overview A handful of survivors and victims of our first year of stories converge for three wildly different confrontations, all setting in motion the explosive second year of PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL: In Washington DC, someone wants to have words with Frank about his recent patriotic costume change-- the Winter Soldier himself, Bucky Barnes! On a houseboat in the Florida Everglades, G.W. Bridge goes head-to-head with Tony Stark to negotiate the terms of his return to S.H.I.E.L.D.... or is it his surrender? And in a psychiatric hospital, Ian the Fake Cop Hero of Times Square has an epically strange chat with his epically unconventional therapist about... HEROES AND VILLAINS. Ian, the man that acted like a police officer in Times Square, is talking to a therapist. She asks him if heroes are important to him. Ian lists off a few and then she asks what he thinks about the Punisher. Ian says he's a mass murderer but his therapist quickly points out that he saved his life and has saved the lives of others. As she asks him what heroes mean to him, she is drawing a skull on her notes. In the Flordia Everglades, G.W. Bridge is in his house boat and gets a visit from Iron Man. Stark wants to know what happened at the Mexico border and how Frank Castle got away. Bridge is very short with him. Stark asks what's with the "old school" guys like him that will only work for Nick Fury. In Washington D.C., Frank is sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The Winter Soldier soon approaches him. It seems that Bucky has left messages in fourteen of the seventeen dead drops, P.O. Boxes, and safety deposit boxes he has stashed around the country. Bucky is surprised that Frank even knows who he is. Frank just asks why he wanted to meet with him. Bucky shows him a newspaper with a picture of Frank wearing his Skull/Captain America outfit. He's not too happy. Ian is still being asked about the Punisher. He says that he just kills people. His therapist asks him what kind and Ian replies, bad people. Ian is starting to see that the Punisher is actually trying to avenge the deaths of the innocent. His therapist says just like the innocent people of Stamford. Ian turns away saying he doesn't want to talk about Stamford. Next she asks him if he still wants to help people. Ian says yes. She has a present for him. Ian excitedly asks what is it. His therapist tells him it's a gun. In Flordia, Bridge tells Stark that legally he could shoot him for trespassing. Stark says he just wants to know why he's so reluctant to work with him. Bridge finally tells him the truth. He tells Stark that he's given his life to S.H.I.E.L.D. only to become a glorified hitman for them. He tells him that he could've brought in Frank but he let him go. Stark calmly asks Bridge what his reasons were since he could be put away permanently for aiding and abetting the Punisher. Bridge says it's because he's in a spiritual crisis. He has done everything inside and outside the law to try to get Castle. He's hated him and has even wanted to kill him. The hate he felt has put him as far away from God as possible. The Winter Soldier wants to fight Frank but says out of respect, they should move away from the Memorial. Frank thinks about it for a moment then tells him it's not going to happen. He then tells Bucky that the reason he met with him is because he has something to give him. If they were to fight, Bucky would kill him. Bucky reluctantly agrees. He sits down next to him telling him he's impressed that Frank didn't even flinch from him. Frank replies with an elbow to Bucky's face. Bucky grabs his wrist, twists it, flips him over and grabs him by the neck while Frank has managed to grab a gun and has it pointed at Bucky's face. He asks him if it looks like he's afraid. Bucky agrees that it doesn't. Frank gives him his duffle bag. It contains the costume he wore. He says he doesn't deserve it. He's done with it. He tells Bucky to do whatever he wants with it, wear it, destroy it, he doesn't care. It's too much of a burden for him. Before he leaves, he throws a key to the Winter Soldier. He tells him it's to one of his dead drops that he didn't find. He tells Bucky that he grabbed Cap's mask after he was arrested. He doesn't want it anymore. He tells him that if he can find it, he deserves to have it. Stark tells Bridge how he looks up to men like him. He was a one-man cavalry and he wishes he had more men like him. He leaves telling Bridge to think things over. Bridge decides he needs to get his crew back together. Back in New York, Ian has been brought down to a shooting range in the hospital. He has never fired a gun before since the one he carried was fake. The therapist tells him to just squeeze the triger. He shoots and a huge smile comes across his face. He shoots again and again. In the other room, a voice asks the therapist how their "boy" is doing. Wearing a Punisher outfit, the therapist tells Jigsaw (also wearing a Punisher-type outfit) that he's coming along just fine. Within the Time-Stream... Rip Hunter, who refuses to break the cardinal rule of time-travel, denies Booster the chance to save his old friend Ted Kord. He is convinced however, when Booster threatens to leave the mission altogether. Rip gives Gold his solemn word to help him save Ted, but tells him to prepare for the consequences. Just as they finish their negotiation, Rip's time-screens (courtesy of T.O. Morrow) reveal that history is undergoing massive change. The Death Certificate of Hal Jordan is their first clue. Rip informs Skeets and Booster that due to their extensive traveling through the time stream, they "chronally contaminate" the things around them, which is why his invitation to the League transformed into Jordan's death certificate. As they watch the time screens, the very title of the "Greatest Green Lantern of All Time" shifts from Hal Jordan altogether, and becomes Guy Gardner! Apparently, some one or some thing has caused Sinestro to interact with Gardner years before he should. This sets off a chain reaction that causes Abin Sur's ring to not find Hal Jordan, but Gardner instead. Because of this, Guy becomes one of the greatest Lanterns of all time, but ends up contracting a "yellow plague" from the planet Ghera, and dies decades before he should. Sinestro goes renegade without opposition, and forges the Sinestro Corps long before the current time-line. He ends up conquering the whole of the universe, turning everything into a militant state.Booster accepts his mission, and Rip goes "time-diving" to find out who has been tampering with things. August 14th, 1939 Egypt, the Tomb of Kha-Ef-Re Dan Garrett and his partner Luri discover the Blue Scarab, and when a pillar collapses, Dan transforms into the first Blue Beetle for the very first time. 8 Years ago Pasadena, California Guy Gardner skips Christmas with his mother and father to watch the Rose Bowl between U of Michigan and Washington. Booster watches from afar, observing that Gardner looks distraught, and constantly eyeing payphones. Suddenly, Sinestro enters Earth's atmosphere, and Booster intercepts him before he finds Gardner. Sinestro becomes irritated, and engages Booster, levelling half of the stadium in the process. Booster manages to survive afater Skeets reveals that the Green Lanterns are still susceptible to the yellow impurity. Sinestro explains that somebody in white with a mask warned him that Gardner would surpass him as Green Lantern, and he has come to dedce how it would be possible to usurp him. Back in the time-stream Rip Hunter continues diving, passing several wormholes and alternate dimensions and time-lines. Suddenly, his machines start detecting something of-the-charts, and he discovers a huge shperical structure residing within the time-stream. Elsewhen, back in Pasadena Sinestro continues his zeal to encounter Guy Gardner, but Booster Gold once again interferes. Just before Sinestro once again beats him to a pulp, Booster shouts that he is, in fact, Sinestro's biggest fan. He lies that in the future, everybody worships the legend of Sinestro, and that he has come from the future to warn Great Sinestro that the Qwardians would decieve him, and try to reveal his own fears. By seeking out Guy, he would show his fear of being replaced, and Booster has come to tell him "what he already knows in his heart", and that is that Sinestro can never be replaced. Sinestro, content with himself, notices Booster's yellow flight-ring. Booster explains that they all wear rings as tribute to him in the future, and that they're all members of the "Sinestro Corps", incidentally inspiring Sinestro to forge the faction in the future. Sinestro departs Earth, and Booster seeks out Guy. Borrowing some clothes, Michael finds him drinking in a local bar. Booster manages to get Guy to talk about his problems, which stem from his relationship with his father. Apparenly Gardner's father is dying, and wants to reconcile with his son. Booster reveals something about his own father, which he notes that he's never even told Ted. Gold's own father was a crook and a gambler, and he died without the chance to see him again. This inspires Guy to go see his father one last time, and gives Booster his Rose Bowl tickets. Apparetly this sets in motion the events that cause Hal Jordan to recieve Abin Sur's ring, putting Gardner in the second spot he so openly loathes. Booster returns to Rip's time-sphere, when suddenly his invitation once again transforms, but this time into the Death Certificate of Superman! Booster finds that Rip is gone, but when he looks outside of the sphere, he finds Hunter idly floating and injured, and Supernova chasing him! Skeets deduces that the being inside the suit is not Daniel Carter, but before they can investigate any further, "Supernova" enters a wormhole and disappears into the wild west. He shifts into some cowboy appropriate attire, and enters a bar, proclaiming that he needs a "gun-fer-hire". Across the bar, none other than Jonah Hex accepts the bounty. X-Factor
Marvel Publishing - 11, 2007 The Isolationist, Part 3: True or False / Endangered Species: Chapter 11
Issue
#23 Layla Miller is in over her head, and her survival hinges on the one man who wants to see her dead. The plan of Josef Huber, the Isolationist, is revealed, but X-Factor may not be around to stop it. Monet and Siryn take an elevator. Featuring "Endangered Species Chapter 11" Guest starring Forge, Beast examines the effect that M-Day had on alternate futures via Forge’s technology. And the future looks bleak! Approaching the immobile youth, a man emerges from the shadows and reaches out to her. Grasping her by the wrist, the man pulls until Layla is dragged from the water and onto the bank of the lake. Immediately, he begins to provide CPR, pushing down on her chest and telling her to come on. She doesn’t get away from him by dying that easily. Come on, dammit! Come… With a gurgle, Layla returns to life, expelling the water that had settled in her lungs. Smiling, the man – in truth Pietro Maximoff – announces that he knew it. He knew she’d survive. Matters between them couldn’t be ended by having someone else do in his nemesis. God wouldn’t be that cruel. Though back among the land of the breathing, Layla struggles with consciousness, briefly recognizing Quicksilver before the world turns blurry and then dark. At X-Factor HQ, being led in by Rictor and accompanied by the Beast, Cyclops tells Madrox that he won’t lie to him. He never thought he’d wind up setting foot in there again. After their little dustup during the Registration Act, he made it quite clear… He knows, Madrox replies. He should consider this a one-time thing. That’s “generous” of him, Cyclops rejoins sarcastically. The fact is, he wouldn’t be there at all if the Beast hadn’t convinced him to set aside their difference… work together for the greater good. He owes Hank McCoy a major debt of gratitude. Almost changing the subject, Madrox bluntly asks Scott what he wants. When Cyclops replies that an apology would be a good start, Madrox replies that he shouldn’t let him stop him. Apologize away. It’s always about the jokes with him, isn’t it? Cyclops asks. To this, Madrox rejoins that he figures one of them needs a sense of humor, and since Cyclops’ not using his… Interrupting, the Beast tells the two that, if it would help, they can line up and he’ll get a ruler and they’ll settle this right now… Entering this scene of escalating tensions arrives Josef Huber, who silently regards Cyclops with disdain. He is a man who thinks he understands how the world works and complains of being ill-used, yet having no idea why he’s there. Ironically, he thinks, now regarding X-Factor, who summoned Cyclops, they are as clueless as he. Only he, Josef Huber, understands what is truly going on. Finally, speaking, Huber greets Cyclops as “Mr. Summers” and introduced himself. He is a man of vision, he then adds. Not so formidable a vision as his perhaps (you don’t see him knocking people over with a mere glance)… but ideas can knock people over as well… And idea, Mr. Summers, he has in abundance. Picture this if he will, he continues, now holding captive the audience of the two X-Men and the assembled members of X-Factor – Madrox, Guido, Rahne and Rictor: everyone who was a mutant… everyone who hopes to be one again… a million mutant march if they will… advancing on the White House and demanding – through speeches, demonstrations and their Constitutional right to peacefully assemble… That mutantkind be accorded the same rights as any other endangered species. Considering this, Cyclops repliers that he’s not sure about this (Mr. …Huber, was it?). The government has traditionally been less an ally of their race than a… well, an opponent. The notion of their going to them hat in hand, asking for help… Interrupting this, Huber asks Cyclops what’s wrong with citizens asking their government for aid? Silently, Huber notes Cyclops attempt to dismiss the notion out of hand. However, the X-Man hesitates. And, as the saying goes, Huber notes to himself, he who hesitates… is lost. “Okay, you’ve got my attention,” Cyclops finally speaks. “Tell me more.” Perfect, Huber thinks. He wants the X-Man to think that he determines what does and does not interest him… just as the fish believers he chooses whether or not to snap at the hook. Now… to reel him in. Elsewhere, Layla Miller once again regains consciousness, only to find confusion awaiting her. Her initial attempts to make sense of her things deals with her last memory. Pietro? She… wasn’t dreaming… However, that last memory is quickly lessened in importance, as Layla takes in her surroundings, that of small, yet spacious wooden room with a single machine in its center. A belt runs through the machine’s continuously turning wheels. A short distance from the machine machinery is Quicksilver. Layla asks him what this place is… And what’s wrong with him? Pietro, however, does not answer at first, instead possessed by inner thoughts. He notes that Layla looks so innocent – one would never know she’s a tool of Satan. She reminds him so much of his own child. How can he do it? How can he do what God expects of him? Now looking at his hands, Pietro notes that he can’t stop shaking… trembling over the prospect of what must be done. And he has to be the one to do it. Just as Abraham was expected to show his devotion by slaying his own son. His must be the hands to remove the devil from his sphere, her blood must be on his hands, no other’s. It’s the only way to balance the scales. To atone for his failure. Finally speaking, he yells at Layla that fate draws them to each other… like twin stars, burning out of control. Ignoring the rant, I fact, taking another look around, Layla asks Pietro why he’s trembling. It’s not even cold in there. Replying that he doesn’t know, he can’t make it stop, he adds that he thinks he’s ill. He thinks… he’s dying. His panicked demeanor now giving way to small grin, he adds that he’s been found wanting, but he has a chance to redeem himself. To prove his worthiness and save his life. Asked by Layla “how,” Pietro lunges at her. “By taking yours!” Much to Pietro’s surprise, however, Layla easily sidesteps him, avoiding his grasp. As he follows her, lunging again, he notes that, once upon a time, he could have moved like lightening, slain her before she ever knew what was happening. Now… now he has to lunge after her like an arthritic snail… As his next swipe causes his jacket to be caught on the piece of machinery, Layla quips to Pietro that that was a mistake. As he begins to struggle to free himself, Layla darts for the door and a moment later finds herself in the world beyond, which is filled with daylight. The chamber, she quickly discovers, was the spoke of a carousel, which is currently in motion. Well, this makes a little more sense now, she quips as she continues her sprint to safety. Finally emerging from the center room as well, Piestro notes to himself that he deserved that. He deserved that because his heart wasn’t it this. He can’t fail this test. He’s… he’s fallen so far, failed to create a world of safety for mutants… failed his sister… his daughter… all mutantkind. If he fails in this… then he’s no further to fall. He will have hit absolutely rock-bottom. He doesn’t know what he’ll do if he hits… However, Quicksilver’s line of thought ends with a warning from Layla, which he does not heed. Told by the fleeing youth no to look behind him, Pietro pauses from his pursuit long enough to do just that. He turns just in time to see the brass ring of the carousel, to line up perfectly with here his head currently is, the rotation of the ride bringing his head toward it at a speed too great to avoid. Pietro barely has time to say his sister’s name before the impact knocks him out. No longer pursued, Layla continues her way. As he speaks to the two X-Men and X-Factor, their eyes and smiles showing their growing approval of his plan, Huber notes to himself that his mind control… his influence… isn’t perfect. If they could step out of their own heads, hear their responses, they would realize they sound incredulous, even out of character. Fortunately, they can’t. They only ones who could are the telepaths. What “luck” there are no telepaths around to be… “Suspicious,” Rictor voices. Asked what he means, both by Huber and Rahne, Rictor apologizes. It’s just… the more that he hears about this… the more he’s… It just sounds too good to be true. Y’know? Too easy. He can appreciate that, Huber replies. He can. After everything all of them have been through, it’s natural that they would look a gift horse in the mouth. And he won’t lie to them: it’s not going to be easy. It’s going to be a very tough road. But really… what worthwhile achievement isn’t difficult? Indeed, it’s the difficulty that makes it worthwhile, wouldn’t he say? Absolutely, Cyclops replies energetically. And he thinks this idea… it’s brilliant. Smiling as well, the Beast adds that if it were any more brilliant, he’d have come up with it himself. Jumping on this, Huber asks if that means they’ll take it to their people then. He’ll help spread the word, yes, Cyclops replies. Already thinking logistics, the Beast asks Huber how long does he think it will take to organize this “Million Mutant March?” A few weeks certainly, Huber answers. The sooner the better, don’t they all agree? As the group begins to do so, Huber notes that Rictor is not among their number. He finds it odd that Rictor seems slow to come around. The fact that he has no powers shouldn’t give him any immunity to his influence. Perhaps if he doesn’t die, he’ll look into that, Huber considers. Walking through a hotel in Las Vegas, young Molly asks her mother if this means no mutants will be able to kidnap them. Walking a short distance behind their bodyguard, a man known as Solo, Molly’s mother replies absolutely not. Mr. Solo and his partner, Mr. Clay, are making sure of that. When Molly’s brother, Wall, asks if he is related to Han Solo, the mercenary replies bluntly that he is not. Reaching the elevator, Solo presses the button and explains to the family that it is an express elevator to the penthouse floor. Clay will be waiting for them there. Asked by the boy if he can hold his gun, Solo, again curtly, says no. Chided by father, Wally defends that he was just asking. God. For this, he is chastised again, this time to watch the swearing. As the doors close, Solo radios to Clay, asking if he’s there. When Clay replies that they really should have radio code name, Solo relents, naming himself “Smart Guy” and asking Clay as “Moron” if he reads. On the other end, Clay sarcastically tells Solo that he’s hilarious. He then asks Solo if they are on the way up. When told that they are, Solo asks in turn if all is clear up there. Yup, he replies. No sign of Monet or Siryn. He guesses they took the hint. Wouldn’t bet the farm on it, Solo rejoins. Inside the elevator, the family begins talking about business and what they plan to eat tonight. However, all topics quickly turn to horror as the elevator jostles, moving the foursome off of their feet. Wally immediately notes that the cables are breaking. They’re going to die!!!! They’re falling!!! However, taking stock of the sensations, Wally’s father notes something amiss. They’re falling… up? On the penthouse level, Clay radios Solo that something is wrong. Something’s wrong with the elevator. Asked what it is, he tells Solo to hold on and moves to the doors to the elevator shaft. Opening it with his fingers, Clay finds the shaft empty and sunlight pouring from its ceiling. Back on the radio, Clay notes to Solo that it was a smart move there, not betting the farm. Asked what happened, Clay tells his partner that girls got the elevator… and they got the shaft. High above the city of Las Vegas, Siryn and Monet are in flight, Monet towing the hotel’s elevator by its severed cables. Her lips pursed in a smile, Monet announces that she’s say that “Operation Wonkavator” is a success, wouldn’t she? Smiling herself, Theresa replies that the grandparents are already at the rendezvous point. Good, Monet rejoins. This should be interesting. As they continue onwards, Siryn asks Monet if she realizes that they’re adding kidnapping and destruction of private property to their rap sheet. Replying that she knows, Monet notes that it’s exciting, isn’t it? Back at the hotel, Clay makes another call on his mobile phone. Using no names, he tells the person on the other end “It’s me” and then proceeds to inform them that they got the kids, just as expected. So that should keep them occupied for awhile longer. On the other end of the line, Josef Huber replies that that’s excellent. Good to hear. Telling Clay to keep him appraised, Huber hangs up. Sitting near Madrox’s desk, Rahne asks if it was good news. Replying that it is, Huber then adds that it’s nothing that need concern them. So this is all going well, he thinks, Madrox smiles from behind his desk. A moment later, he asks them to hold on and answers his own mobile. “X-Factor Investigations.” The voice on the other end causes him to sit up straight at attention, calling out Layla’s name. Where the hell has she been? he asks. Trying to keep up with her responses, Madrox tells her to slow down. He doesn’t… She tried to what? “Oh, dear,” Huber silently curses. At the edge of Central Park, Layla rants over a borrowed phone. Kill me! she reiterates. Nicole bashed her head in with a rock and tossed her in a river! She’d be dead if it weren’t for one of those whacked coincidences that pretty much sum up her life. Now listen, she then says, changing subjects. Nicole said a “Mr. Huber” wanted her dead. The name’s not ringing any bells with her, which is never a good sign. As soon as she get’s back, she’ll run the name through all their databases. See if she can find him. Easily reading Madrox’s expression, Huber sighs inwardly. X-Factor served its purpose, he notes: to bring him face to face with more influential mutants, out of the range of telepaths who could sense his influence. It’s a shame, really. In a way, he’s become somewhat fond of them… despite the fact that they, and everyone like them, have made his life a living Hell. Rising from his chair, Madrox tells Layla that he’ll have to call her back. Her immediate objection that this is not her phone goes unheard, as the clamshell phone is snapped shut. Knowing what’s to come next, Huber takes a moment to stand tall, his massive chest puffed out before him. The next moment, that chest is composed of organic steel and Huber’s eyes glow crimson red. His demeanor and posture have turned threatening, drawing the immediate, dumbfounded reactions of Guido and Rahne. Ah well, Huber silently notes. Nothing to be done about ti now. Of course, the problem is that he can’t kill them. So he’s somewhat limited in his options. Fortunately, he then silently adds, they don’t know that. A moment later, Guido is propelled through the wall and into the world outside by a powerful, crimson-red optic blast. Turning to her lupine form in an instant, Wolfsbane leaps at Huber, who is less than concerned. He notes aloud that it didn’t have to be this way. With that, he teleports out of Rahne’s destination in a cloud of dark purple brimstone smoke, accompanied by a loud BAMF. Appearing behind Madrox, he continues that, yes, they were all going to die… that much was a given. But it was going to be quick… merciful. And in the company of their fellow mutants. Not alone. Loneliness… It’s truly a terrible feeling. With this, he propels Madrox out through the hole through which Guido had been shot moments before. The impact on the pavement outside immediately generates a dupe. Having already made his way back, Guido notes to Madrox that this day just ain’t turnin’ out the way he’d hoped. A moment later, Guido holds out his arms and catches Wolfsbane, whom Huber had just tossed, the same as Jamie. The X-Factor HQ now empty save he, Huber makes his own departure, though one more of grace and poise. He simply rises in the air, floats outward and finally settles to the pavements before. As he does so, Huber notes that X-Factor does not understand. How could they? They don’t understand he’s been manipulating all the events of the past months. That he supplied the X-Cell with the weaponry to approximate their powers. That he arranged for Monet and Siryn to be elsewhere so their mind-based powers couldn’t threaten him. That he was a silent partner in Singularity Investigations. God may move in mysterious ways, but he has nothing on him. In fact, in a sense, he is their God, and this is simply them meeting their maker. Huber having settled to the ground, Madrox asks why he is doing this. Why? his demeanor calm and reserved, Huber replies that it’s because… they’re driving him mad. And that’s the simple truth. In contrast to Huber’s calm, Madrox is incensed. Oh yeah? Well… He knows what they say about the truth! With this, Madrox, Guido and Wolfsbane lunge toward Huber – but never make it to him, as an energy portal, built by Huber with skills borrowed from Forge, opens before them, their momentum carrying them through it. As they disappear and the portal closes behind them, Josef Huber notes that he does know what they say. The truth… hurts. Somewhere in an arctic landscape, Madrox, accompanied by his dupe, Wolfsbane and Guido, himself far, far from home.
In fact, he continues, he can’t think of a single mutant from an alternate timeline who lost their powers. They were protected somehow… perhaps by temporal or extra-dimensional energy. If they can determine what saved them, perhaps they can reverse what happened to the others. But it’s really not his field, the Beast then sheepishly admits to Forge. He knows that he’s done research in this area… Well, he’s right, Forge replies. He has. He’s already looked into this… and as far as he can tell, it’s just a coincidence. He knows something about chronal energy, and he knows something about magic. The one doesn’t offer protection from the other. … But it gets worse, he then admits to Hank. No so long ago, the mutant-hunting robot called Nimrod confronted him there. It wanted him to repair it, because he’d done so successfully… in the future. when he’ll have a family it can threaten to make him comply. To prove this, Nimrod showed him images from its memory banks. Images of a future with mutants in it. After Nimrod was beaten, Forge continues, once he’d had time to think, he reached the same conclusion he did. There are countless possible futures. And they know mutant exist in many of them. They’ve seen it with their own eyes… or been told as much by people who came from them. So, he built this: Pointing to a work station, which is hooked into a series of machines appearing to be mainframes, Forge explains that it combines their mutant-detecting Cerebra technology with the chronal machinery that powers Nimrod’s time travel. Asked what it does, he tells Hank that, using reading’s from artifacts that came from various futures as a baseline, it scans those timelines. Then asked if he can actually see the future, Forge replies that he can’t see… but scan. Specifically, search them for mutants. Regarding the console, which currently shows several lines including three labeled “AoA,” “Nimrod” and “XSE,” Hanks notes that they are all… Flatlined, yes, Forge replies. As of now… he’d guess ever since M-Day… either these futures no longer exist… or they do… and there are no more mutants in them. Silence fills the lab, as the Beast’s head lowers in failure, his hands resting against the console. Finally, however, he raises his head, eying Forge with bared teeth. “No,” he says. He refuses to accept this. When Forge begins to defend, the Beast points to the machine and snarls that this isn’t science. This is astrology. More of his damned magic. To this, Forge begins to defends his work, offering to show his data, however the Beast replies with a shout of “NO!” and a back-handed blow, which tosses Forge across the lab. Teeth still bared, Hank tells Forge that he’s studied mutant his entire life. He cured Legacy virus, not him. Yes, Forge replies, because biology is his field. As he said himself, this is his. He’s not saying it’s hopeless. Perhaps working together they can… Turning his back, the Beast rejects both Forge’s offer and his outstretched hand. No. You can’t help me. None of you can. With this, the Beast leaps upward, deftly propelling himself through the window and outside. Later, at their motel room, the Dark Beast pours over his laptop, empty food containers strewn across his workstation. Not deigning to look up, he asks Hank if he had fun playing with his little friends. It was pointless, Hank replies, his arms crossed over his barreled chest. Looking to the future was nonsense. The future is fluid… shaped by what they do here. Now. Smiling maniacally at this, the Dark Beast rejoins “we?” Did he hear that correctly? Having returned to his own station and begun work on his own computer, Hank replies that he’s realized no one else can help him. At least, no one who’s willing to. And he’s realized something else. They’ve been wasting their time. Asked if he means giving up, the Dark Beast tells him that that’s not like them. He’s not giving up, Hank replies. Just changing course. They’ve been beating their heads against a brick wall examining mutants and de-powered mutants, when it’s clear that’s a dead end. But mutant come from human parents, whose DNA combines to create the X-gene in their offspring. The Scarlet Witch destroyed the X-gene, but he doubts even she could destroy its building blocks. If they can isolate chromosomes from normal humans that combine to create mutants… perhaps they can rebuild a viable X-gene from scratch, as it were. Mutant, the Dark Beast replies in consideration, is a one-in-a-million occurrence. Identifying the right humans would be like finding a needle in a genetic haystack. Actually, no, Hank replies. He already knows where to look. He thinks how his reputation will be boosted after killing Wolverine. Wolverine isn't too willing to help out with that. He jumps at the Hood and stabs him in the shoulders. The Hood tries turing invisible but Wolverine's senses can still detect him. The Hood then shoots him several times in the crotch. Wolverine is okay with that saying his will grow back. He asks the Hood if his will. The Hood then transforms into a huge demon. Wolverine still stands up to him and the Hood jumps out through a window. Wolverine goes outside only to find that the Hood is long gone. He heads back inside and wonders if "it" will grow back bigger now. At Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorium, he lies in bed with the Night Nurse. She is a little put off at his distraction despite all her effort to "entertain" him. She does comment at how she is impressed that he has opened his home to his team. Stephen says that he feels bad he wasn't involved in the Civil War. He feels he should have done something. Night Nurse tells him she is going to her hospice. Stephen asks if she can come back so he can introduce her to the team. She tells him that she already knows most of them from when they've gotten injured. She says that he just wants to show her off. She says she'll call him later. Clint looks over his Ronin costume. He decides to take a shower. Echo embarrasses herself by walking in on him. He tells her "In or out." Maya bolts out and slams the door. Iron Fist has Strange look him over. He mentions how recently he's lost some of the Iron Fist power when someone else tried claiming it. He asks if there was a way for Stephen to lock it off. Strange says no. Someday, they both have to give up their power to the next in line. Spider-Man walks in with Clint and Maya and declares that he is a Skrull. Spidey says it would make sense if he was really a sleeper-Skrull. Luke walks in and asks what he's talking about. Peter says that maybe he's a Skrull and doesn't know it. Perhaps if someone says a magic word like "Mxyzptlk" he'll turn all "skrully." Clint asks why he's so happy that they are being invaded by Skrulls. Peter says he's just happy that they have an enemy that isn't Tony Stark. They begin to talk about the fact that they have all shown up, except for Wolverine. Peter mentions that he's on "like three other teams" so he'll probably come along eventually. Jessica Jones comes in and says that Luke thinks his baby is a half-Skrull. Luke does not want to get into this in front of everyone. Jessica tells him tough $%#@. He didn't want to talk to her about it in private so they're going to get it out in the open now. Finally Stephen says that he did some research and there is a spell that will reveal the true spiritual nature of the individual. A vision will be produced for everyone to see. Danny notes that it could be embarrassing. They prepare to do it and Peter asks Cage and Jessica when are they going to name their kid. Luke says they already did. Jessica tells everyone that they named her Danielle Cage. Danny is flattered. Luke tries telling him that they didn't name her after him but rather after Danny Partridge. The spell is ready. All their true selves are revealed. Luke stands with his satin shirt and tiara. He can live with that. Iron Fist appears as the first Iron Fist in history. He's relieved that there wasn't any cross dressing involved. Jessica is in her super hero outfit. Luke says he knew it. Peter appears as his nerdy self before he became Spider-Man. Maya appears as a female Daredevil. Clint appears as Captain America. He tells them to keep going. Dr. Strange appears a physician. Wolverine walks in just in time to be revealed as a samurrai. They tell Wolverine that none of them are Skrulls. He says good because they have something new to worry about. He tells them about the Hood and his plan to use a Deathlock to attack Stark Tower. Peter wonders if they should do something about it. CLint says they'll do what Cap would've done, help them. Luke asks them if they remember asking him how they know if they're the good guys, this is how they know. They do "good guy #$%@." Heading over, they see the other Avengers leave the Tower. Luke wonders if Deathlok is already there. Ronin notices movement below. Spider-Man says they're symbiotes. As they move forward, Echo is hit by one and it begins to crawl up her arm. Overview: It’s brother versus brother and the outcome could decide the fate of billions. UNCANNY X-MEN’S “Rise and Fall of the Shi’Ar Empire” continues here! Vulcan is the Shi’Ar Emperor and Havok is leading the rebellious Starjammers. But who is really right and who is really wrong? Issue Summary:
The Eldest of a bug-like, alien race stares outside his window. Even after a millennium, he can still hear the screams. Outside, a gigantic battle is taking place, resulting in fiery explosions of death and destruction. Some other members of the race appear behind the Eldest, and warn him about a new development in the war:they have come… the Shi’ar. The Eldest realizes what that means: the time has come… Shi’ar space, weeks later… Inside one of the several Shi’ar ships lined up nearby three moons, a trooper wishes to speak to his captain. He reports their long-range sensors make no sense, as there an anomaly has been detected. There’s a strong electromagnetic field, but the trooper cannot detect its source. It is everywhere. “Gods preserve,” the captain panics. It’s a trap! The captain orders all of his Warbirds to go to condition black, because… the Starjammers are here! Outside, the Starjammer ship approaches the Warbirds. Ch’od appears on the Warbird’s computer screen, and advises them to surrender. The captain of course refuses. To this, Ch’od replies that he shall put him in the “not wise” category then. A moment later, the Starjammers, led by Havok, teleport within the ship and lay siege. The captain opens fire on them and orders his Warbirds to kill them all. Havok fires a blast in defense, but reminds his team that they need the captain alive. Lorna, as she magnetically tackles some soldiers down, jokes that she thinks Alex is talking to Rachel, because she stopped being crazy months ago. Rachel fires a telepathic blast on another soldiers, and mentions she’ll do her best, but will make no promises. Korvus Rook’Shir slashes his huge and powerful Blade of the Phoenix through his opponents, and mopes that the X-Men talk far too much in battle. The captain warns his Warbirds not to let the Starjammers take over his ship. He is half-way through ordering the activation the self-destruct mechanism when Raza sneaks up on the captain and points his sword in the captain’s face, indicating he should stop where he stands. The captain obeys. With the bridge now secured, Havok orders to open the comm channel. The captain shouts that taking his ship won’t accomplish anything. He points out there are eleven more Warbirds guarding the supply line, and one ship alone can’t stand against them. To this, a voice via comm. replies that he is correct… but the Starjammer is not alone. Seeing the source of the voice, the captain sees a screen on which Lilandra and her Major-General, Ka’ardum, appear. The captain is surprised to see them both still alive. Havok wants to talk to the captain about him and his regiment to join the resistance. Alex wants to discuss Emperor Vulcan. Meanwhile on Chandilar, throneworld of the Shi’ar Empire… Vulcan goes to sit back on his throne, with his wife Deathbird standing beside him. Accompanying his court is a host of soldiers, positioned as an honor guard. Among their number is the superguardian, Gladiator. Returning to the subject at hand, Vulcan asks Araki to confirm what he just told him – that he isn’t loved by the Shi’ar people. Clearly nervous, Araki promises that he wouldn’t attempt to dishonor his lord, even if it meant his life. But it’s true, the Shi’ar Empire is tearing itself apart. The resistance to Vulcan’s rule is strong. His… elimination of former Emperor D’Ken has divided the people. And with Lilandra and Major-General Ka’ardum working with the resistance, more and more of the military are defecting. To this, Gladiator dourly proclaims that these people lack honor. As Deathbird quietly smiles, Vulcan is more concerned that he isn’t loved by the people and demands to hear the truth. Araki is hesitant for a moment and then, with a bow, explains that only the presence of a member of the Neramani bloodline as royal consort is holding the remaining supporters in place. Turning to his wife, Vulcan asks her what she thinks of that. Deathbird walks forward to Araki, and slashes his face with her sharp nails. As Araki reels in pain, Deathbird thinks aloud that Araki is a politician who likes to play games. She advisess him to remember that Vulcan is the Emperor now, whether the Secret Order likes it or not. Changing subjects, Vulcan wants to hear about his brother now. He wants to hear about Havok and the Starjammers. He wants to know why they aren’t dead already. The Clench Worlds, near Shi’ar space… Alex next shows an image of a station called Feather’s Edge. He explains it’s defended by a series of Armageddon-class killstations. He admits their battle won’t be pretty, but cutting off Feather’s Edge will weaken Vulcan’s forces to a breaking point. Lilandra and Ka’ardum are also among the assembly. Alex tells Ka’ardum they’ve avoided amassing his armada until now, but Vulcan’s forces still outnumber theirs. However, Alex believes taking this target will even the odds. And afterward, they’ll bring the fight to Chandilar. In a section off from the main area, Ch’od tells Lorna he’s confused. If Alex is filled with this “self-doubt” she spoke off, he thinks they should all start doubting themselves immediately. They’ll win this war much quicker, he jokes. Lorna responds that Ch’od should just wait for it. Lorna also notices Korvus is not present in the hearing. She noticed Korvus seemed cranky on the supply mission, and asks Rachel if the two of them are still fighting. Rachel answers that she broke off their relationship. They’re just too different. It’s too weird and too complicated. She thinks she should be okay, if she can keep from making out with him. Back in the main chamber, Ka’ardum compliments Havok on the briefing and that, in such a short time, he has become an expert on the Shi’ar military landscape. He mentions that Alex’ strategies are excellent, and that he’s surprised Earth can spare such a natural leader. Alex points out that he’s just there to stop Vulcan. His brother Cyclops was a great leader, and so was his father. But not him, Alex sighs. Ch’od and the others heard Alex say this, Ch’od now seeing the doubt, much to his dismay. Later, at the planet “Standing Still” As they stand before a grand view, a planet and two other moons rising above a desert landscape, Alex does his best to change subjects. When he asks Korvus if he and Rachel are still fighting, Korvus replies that Rachel vexes him. He finds it weird: war spreads across the galaxy, and he cannot stop thinking about her. He asks Alex for advice, seeing he is Rachel’s uncle. The only thing Alex can come up with, is saying that Rachel likes cheeseburgers. At a bar… Changing subjects, she asks Rachel if she’s okay. Korvus distracted her, Rachel replies. He clouded everything. But she finally talked to Lilandra. Lorna is surprised to hear that, because they asked Rachel not to do so. Continuing, Rachel says she learned there is a Secret Order within the Shi’ar Empire. They’re the ones who ordered to murder her family. When Lorna begins to show sympathy, Rachel becomes angry, a blue Phoenix sign appears over her eye. She vows that after they’ve taken Vulcan down, she’ll find this Secret Order and will make them pay. Chandilar, the Shi’ar throneworld… Though Vulcan grows angry, he doesn’t interfere. Instead, he is distracted by an image of himself on a large screen, and Shi’ar letters are marked over it. A female voice explains to Vulcan that the words mean: “kill the false Emperor.” Turning to the voice, Vuclan is surprised to find Cal’syee, who’s also hooded. Deathbird jokes that the Emperor should not travel without an Imperial Guard escort. Gabriel points out that the Guard are as likely to try and kill him as anyone else, to which Deathbird confirms that’s true. The Guard does hate him. Vulcan isn’t exactly glad to hear that, but Deathbird asks her husband to let her finish. She thinks people hate their Emperor because they do not know him. Because they do not know that Gabrielis a Shi’ar. Vulcan can’t believe his ears. Deathbird gently touches Gabriel’s face, and confirms the truth in her words. She can see it inside him, and is certain that the time will come when Gabriel shows the Empire that he was born to rule them. He will show them greatness that D’Ken never possessed. He will show them strength that Lilandra never had. And she’s certain that people will love him for that. As she does. They kiss. Deathbird asks Gabriel to come with her, as his spies have brought much news. She wants them to plan the death of the resistance. Later, at Feather’s Edge… Both the Starjammer ship and the Warbird ships start firing at Feather’s Edge, which does its best to defend itself. Still, Shi’ar stations explode under the attack. When an alarm suddenly fills the bridge, Alex quickly asks Ch’od for a status report. Incoming, he reports. By the energy signature… the Shi’ar are there… and lots of them. When Havok then turns to her, Rachel telepathically scans and confirms… Vulcan is there. Standing confidently in his royal flagship together with Gladiator, Vulcan grins that his empire’s spies are good. He orders to kill the X-Men, Lilandra and Ka’ardum. He’s sure the others will fall in line afterward. As the Shi’ar armada opens fire, Havok orders evasive maneuvers. However, Ch’od had already anticipated the order and has done so. Nearby, Raza notes that Vulcan brought the entire Shi’ar fleet with him, so that must mean he knew they were coming. Meanwhile, at the wing of K’ythri, Ka’ardum’s battlecruiser… In his ship, Vulcan asks Gladiator if they should kill all of their opponents. He remembers that Gladiator said before that the Shi’ar who deflected lack honor. He wants to know if Gladiator would kill them all. Hesitant, Gladiator says that he only serves. It’s not his place to decide. Gabriel asks Gladiator that when he took his eye, if that was service as well. Or simply a decision? They are interrupted by a powerful explosion, which tears Vulcan’s ship in half! The cause is a host of newly arrived fleet of immense, bug-like ships that fill the sky and outnumbering both fleets. As Ka’ardum reels at the sight of the Hammer having been destroyed, Lilandra asks her uncle what’s going on. Whose ships are those? Interrupting, one of the bridge crew announces that the newcomers are broadcasting something. Meanwhile, in their own ship, the Starjammers don’t understand what’s going on either. Raza smiles that it really happened… the ship that just blew up was the Emperor’s. Nearby, Ch’od learns via the broadcast that their new allies are calling themselves the Scy’ar Tal. He finds that a bold choice. Likewise, Korvus recognizes the meaning of the name, as does Rachel. “Scy’ar Tal” means… “death to the Shi’ar.” The name of their race means “Death to the Shi’ar.” Characters: Araki, Ch'od, Deathbird, Gladiator, Havok, Ka'ardum, Korvus, Lilandra, Polaris, Rachel Summers, Raza, The Eldest, Vulcan Teams: Shi'ar, Starjammers Creators: Billy Tan, Brian Reber, Christopher Yost, Joe Caramagna, Nick Lowe, Paco Diaz, Vincente Cifuentes, Will Panzo |
