The Unusual Heroes
Let's face it, one thing that Marvel is not missing out on right now is team books. The Avengers have multiple titles, X-Men as well and several other mainstays like the Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts. That's not even mentioning the new books that have come out of Civil War. Now we also have the New Warriors, another book that is being launched by a Hollywood screenwriter. What is truly amazing however is that most of these books are actually good, some are just plain great and must reads. It seems that New Warriors might just turn out to be one of those books as well.
Although none of the issues have totally blown me away thus far, I can honestly say that I have been entertained by each one thus far. This series is really on the verge of being great, and it's not missing much to get there. Grevioux took a different approach then most writers with his team book. Instead of introducing the whole team right from the beginning, he's shown them, but decided to concentrate on only a few characters to start off the ark. It's not all original however. He is using the "tried and true" tactic of having an outsider joining the team so the reader can be introduced to them through the characters eyes.
Also it's nice to see someone actually using old characters for a new team book instead of creating a whole roster of new characters. I'm not dumping on The Order or Avengers: The Initiative, but I'm just not sure if I could have handled yet another Marvel book full of brand new characters. There's too many of them that aren't being used, and this is the perfect project for them. It's also the perfect set up for teenage ex-mutants/heroes that want to be rebels against The Initiative.
It's not going to take very much to make this book great, and the mystery surrounding Night Thrasher is enough to keep me coming next month and to see what will happen next. Although not an incredible book, I definitely think this series is worth checking out.
