Review: New Mutants #18

Posted by Zack Freeman (314 posts) - - Show Bio
The New Mutants' conflict with Limbo's "new Hellions" erupts into a full-out, knock-down, drag-out brawl.

The Good

Execution is the name of the game and Wells & Kirk deliver another well-executed comic that pulls you into the action immediately and gets you involved in every single step of it. Even simple scenes like the "brain stem cannon face" mutant getting his lens fitted on had seriously solid tension. I don't know what these new Hellions' history is, but I was quite intrigued by the parade of colorful grotesques (with a lot of humor joining it.) My favorite parts were definitely the one "rocket" man's inadequacies about Cannonball's powers and the truly, utterly, completely creepy reverse-speech scene with Cypher.

The Bad

Marvel's hells seem to be showing up a lot lately between this, Wolverine, Chaos War and the latest arc of Thor. Once again, I can't help feeling like there's a lot of double, triple and even quadruple dipping going on across the line. So much so that, again, I can't help wondering why these heroes and their demons aren't all running into each other - - because it's getting so crowded down there!

The Verdict - 4.5/5

Month in, month out, this has been one of my favorite titles from the X-Men line. I was introduced to most of these characters right when X-Force was first hitting its stride, so I've always considered their New Mutants iterations to honestly be a bit boring in comparison. So it's a notable accomplishment that this creative team has not only got me interested in this version, but also got me hooked enough to be looking forward to this title every week it's out.

The cover certainly looks awesome! With all the hell stories and the vampires, Marvel must have picked up that people are wanting some horror in their books or something?

Can't wait to read this; I've really been enjoying the current arc.

I love the guy with all the mouths. He's really kind of creepy.

This IS a great issue because this story links all the way back to Inferno. I'm going to miss Zeb Wells.

Nice review. But isn't hell and limbo two different things? Because I believe Limbo is the setting for the New Mutants stuff and Hell is where Wolverine and Thor are.

@Zack Freeman: The gruesome mutants were the babies stolen by N'Astirh's demons during the Inferno.  As part of a magic spell to create a portal large enough for Limbo to take over New York, they needed babies of power (ie mutants) to position at the crucial points of a giant pentagram.  That powered up a giant portal in the sky.  The combined forces of the New Mutants & X-Terminators saved the babies, but they couldn't take care of so many children.  Since the demons had killed most of their parents (or the rest couldn't be traced) then the babies were handed over to the authorities... who presumably then handed them over to the military.  It's the natural thing to do with a baby...  hand it over to the armed forces for care :p

New Mutants got pummeled way to easily, I have to wonder if the Inferno babies will join up with New Mutants after this is over, lots of interesting chars, the black guy had a helmet at the end. Is he a telepath or a speeder?

@Metatron_Da_Don: Speeder it seems for now but powers haven't been clearly defined.

@Skaddix: Yes I read the back issues and he uses his powers then, but also in #18 he can be seen in the large fight panel speeding around.

True still its also appears that he has sometime of molecular destabilization seeing as he killed some of the soldiers and has blood on his uniform.

I agree as he seem to have ran through general combest and vaporized him at the end of NM 16, maybe he has some kind of hyper kinetic ability like speed of young avengers. Also he was seen in the amoeba kid alex in NM 18 speed inside with karma and cannonball or am I mistaken?
