New Mutants #50 Review
New Mutants #50 Review
Overview:
The series wraps up with a party.
The Good:
The issue started off doing what it does best, letting the team just be people, not superheroes; and there was minimal focus on Doug, which was refreshing from the last several issues. Then the issue contains a battle with an old Phalanx enemy (Warlock’s species) and they fight it before going back for a short time. The fight seems a little unnecessary but it works to show how many friends that eh team has made over the course of the series. Seeing the Disir (Norse cannibal-zombielike women) at a party was pretty funny.
The writing is pretty solid coming from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. For me, their run has been up and down. Some of the issues (like Amara and Mephisto’s date) were great issues and over all excellent, but the last few arcs, dealing with space monsters and time travel, weren’t as good. It is unfortunate that they couldn’t keep up the momentum from their high points. Still this issue was a big step closer to their better work.
The artwork is split between Felix Ruiz and Kelbs. I prefer Klebs art here; his style fits more with the light hearted atmosphere of the party by not using heavy lines. Ruiz does do a good job with the fight scene though.
The Bad:
Felix Ruiz has a more abstract art style, which while not bad, is not my favorite.
The fight was cool because there were so many characters working together but if it wasn’t there and it was only the party, it would have been just as good if not better. That and the art is a matter of personal preference.
Verdict:
A good end to a good series that has faltered a little lately; Abnett and Lanning do a good job ending the series and I am sad to see it end. Overall the issue is very good although, I feel that personal preference will play a big part in people’s judgement of the issue. Seeing all of the teams friends and the people they have met over their adventure was really cool and it was definitely a good way to end the series.
