Getting the ball rolling on this story again.
New Mutants #13
Second Coming: Chapter 7
I don’t know if some of the wow factor of this story was stolen with the funeral in the last issue. But when I read this issue something started to bug me just a little bit. Why didn’t Ariel get a funeral? She died first, but she wasn’t really a mutant anyway and no reader really cared so let’s just sweep her under the rug and move on, that’s the new Scott Summers way I guess. I just wasn’t really in the mood to read the book at the time and I just reread it and everything seems to be forcing an up-beat after the pause for Kurt. Maybe I’ll drink more coffee and give it another once over.
Okay…coffee is in me now…getting excited…and still just a little underwhelmed but ready for this issue to get underway none the less.
We start of with some scenes from members of X-Force and Domino has to break the bad news to Vanisher that Bastion is targeting the X-Men’s teleporters. He runs. He is found. He vanishes and fate is now unknown. This shows us just how put together this plan of Bastion’s is.
Donald Pierce is still crippling the X-Men and making sure they are stranded on the island by taking out their planes. (Because none of them can fly right?)
While this is going on we get to see what remains of the New Mutants try to help Warlock deal with his recent sins and try to figure out if all of this is worth it and discuss where Cable stands with all that is going on. This gives Hope a little opportunity to grow up as Cable watches the “chick-fight” in the Utopia cafeteria.
There is also a moment in here again where beast confronts Cyclops about his actions and the costs of those actions. We know that he will be joining the Avengers and I don’t see their relationship ending well. Will Scott Summers become the new Magneto? Or will he stay the course and remain a different breed of leader all together?
The X-Club that has basically been playing maintenance team for the asteroid/island goes out to investigate oil derrick an gets trapped… Count down clock… OH NOs!!
The writing in the issue was okay, the art was excellent and the tempo seemed to jump around quite a bit, but probably because this was the equivalent of primering a lawn mower that hasn’t been used in awhile. This still continues to be a good story and keeps the reader interested and caring about most all that is going on.
