Secret Invasion #1 Returns With A New Printing

Added by G-Man on Apr 8, 2008

Filed under: Skrulls, Brian Michael Bendis, New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Leinil Francis Yu

There's no way anyone could be surprised by issue one selling out.  I'm sure Marvel had a nice hefty print run but with all the hype and great word of mouth, people are going to want to snatch this up.  I usually don't like the huge "event" comics so much but this was something.  Now to try to wait for issue 2!

To meet the overwhelming demand for this year’s hottest comic book event, leading to a quick sell out at Diamond (though copies may be available at the retail level), Marvel is going back to press with Secret Invasion #1 Second Printing Variant! With a gorgeous wraparound cover featuring the interior art of Leinil Yu—and the return of some familiar faces! From the superstar creative team of Eisner-winner Brian Bendis (New Avengers, Mighty Avengers) and acclaimed artist Leinil Francis Yu (New Avengers), this double-sized first issue has the jaws of fans and critics on the floor!

“I just want to say thank you to every retailer and comic reader who jumped into this with us,” said Bendis. “We have so much more to show you. This is just the beginning!”

Marvel urges retailers to check their orders on Secret Invasion and tie-in issues, as both continue to generate buzz and quick sell outs. Just what do the Skrulls have planned? Who are the heroes who’ve emerged from the Skrull craft? And with systematic attacks on every major force in the Marvel Universe, can anyone rise up to oppose the Skrulls? Don’t miss a single issue of Secret Invasion!

Echo and the Infiltration in New Avengers #39

Added by G-Man on Feb 20, 2008

Filed under: Skrulls, New Avengers, Echo

We've had good reason to be suspicious of Echo since the whole Elektra thing.  She did "die" and all.  Also, why did the Elektra/Skrull want Echo in the Hand?  Seems like a way to lure either Daredevil or possible it was a trap for the New Avengers all along to go to Japan.  It's interesting that it has taken all this time for Echo and Matt to talk.  Then again, all this may just be to throw us off.

Taking refuge in Avengers Penthouse, the New Avengers continue to elude Stark’s Mighty Avengers and continue their hunt to weed out Skrull imposters. New Avengers #39 follows Echo as a skeptical Maya Lopez, along with Wolverine riding shotgun, widens her eyes in a shocking revelation about the Skrull infiltration!

Superstar Brian Michael Bendis and award-winning artist David Mack (the man who created Echo) give us the next chapter in the events leading up to the highly anticipated Secret Invasion event! And they bring in a very special guest appearance by a character near and dear to both Bendis and Mack’s hearts!

The New Avengers stand on the precipice of Secret Invasion and their ranks, as well as those of the entire superhero community, are about to be shaken to their very core!

How deep have the Skrulls infiltrated the New Avengers? Could Echo and Wolverine provide more insight to the invasion? All this and an exciting Avenger hookup in New Avengers #39!

New Comics 2/13/08

Added by G-Man on Feb 11, 2008

Filed under: New Avengers, Booster Gold, Beautie

Here's this week's run-down of what's coming in.

Marvel is giving us another Amazing Spider-Man.  That means more Jackpot and we finally get to see this new Menace.  The big debate is, is Jackpot really MJ?  I'm leaning more towards no.  They've gone all these years not having her be super-powered.  There was that one annual where she "had" spider-powers.  But that wasn't real.

New Avengers is showing us that things are going to be a little rocky between Luke and Jessica.  I guess her going to the "other side" to register isn't going to sit so well with him.  Hopefully we'll get another nugget in the Skrull Invasion.  Is little Danielle a Skrull?  Is Jessica?  Don't forget Captain Marvel is already sold out with Diamond.

Don't forget X-Force #1.  And you know I'll be getting the ClanDestine hardcover.  Marvel does a great job on these.  Obviously you know how much I love Alan Davis by now.  I highly recommend you pick this up if you can find it.  Issue #1 came out last week.

Looks like I'll be picking up 27 comics this week.  Plus the ClanDestine Hardcover.  Yikes.

New Avengers vs The Hood-The Final Round

Added by G-Man on Jan 3, 2008

Filed under: Brian Michael Bendis, New Avengers, The Hood, Carlo Pagulayan

I have to say, I'm not so sure about this Hood guy.  I missed his mini-series when it came out but have wanted to read it since it was written by Brian K. Vaghan.  He doesn't seem too likable.  Then again, he is basically a "bad guy" so I guess that's the point.  I also don't like that he and his army of "bad guys" are going to discover the New Avengers' (not really) secret hideout.  So somehow the demon thing inside him is able to see past Dr. Strange's mystical barrier?  Is this supposed to be a slam against poor Brother Voodoo since he wasn't able to detect them there?  I do think this issue needs to come out fast.  Spidey is still in his black outfit.  I love the Bendis Avengers stories but they seem to kind of drag on.  I mean look at Mighty Avengers.  That's supposed to be their "first" mission.  How many missions have we seen that team on since.  They formed right after Cap died.  Close to a year now.  But I'm not complaining that much.  I enjoy the stories.  So bottom line, I guess that's what matters.

It’s the fight you’ve been waiting for, as the Hood takes his army to the New Avengers’ door for the battle royale in New Avengers Annual #2! Superstar writer Brian Michael Bendis (New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Ultimate Spider-Man), rising star artist Carlo Paulayan (She-Hulk) and acclaimed cover artist Jim Cheung (New Avengers: Illuminati) continue the action from the pages of New Avengers #37 in this double-sized action extravaganza! Wrapping up—and tying into—threads from Civil War, World War Hulk, both the Avengers titles and leading into this year’s most anticipated comic book event, Secret Invasion, how can you afford to miss this issue? As the final chapter of “The Trust,” a storyline kicked off with the shocking revelation of a Skrull posing as Elektra in New Avengers #31, this is essential reading for any Avengers Fan!

If that wasn’t enough, witness the end of an era for a major Avenger and the jaw-dropping defection of another! That’s right True Believer—the Avengers won’t be the same after this one!

The Hood’s out for revenge and he’s got nothing to lose anymore, but are the New Avengers prepared for such an assault? And if they couldn’t defeat the Hood before, what chance do the New Avengers have now? There’s only one place to find the answers and it’s New Avengers Annual #2!

Secret Invasion: Infiltration Begins.

Added by G-Man on Oct 16, 2007

Filed under: New Avengers, The Initiative, Mighty Avengers, Illuminati

Who would've thought that Skrulls could be cool?  I mean these are the guys that were tricked into thinking they were cows (and then later turned into Skrullburgers, yum).  Then again, when hasn't Bendis surprised us.  I'm really looking forward to this.  Five years in the making?  Sounds good.  I like a well, thought out plot rather than a quick slapped together story.  It seems like there's an actual story here.  No shocking death (besides Elektra, who I'd say is still alive somewhere) to sell the story.  I'm so tired of the "let's kill _________ (insert semi-major character here) so we can show the world how bold we are and then we'll bring them back later in a somewhat clever way."  Don't get me wrong, I know Bendis "killed" Hawkeye and brought him back (I wasn't impressed with that "idea").  I know that Brubaker is doing a great job with the death of Cap.  It's just we don't need the same thing over and over.  Death is so meaningless in comics.  Raise your hand if you believe that Cable's dead.  Comic characters are like the Terminator.  They'll always "be back."

So who's a Skrull?  Stark is a major jerkwad but making him a Skrull is too easy.  Cap being a dead Skrull would be too easy too (plus his body reverted to an old man, not a Skrull).  Dr. Strange seems to be acting a little weird but I don't think he's one.  But he did do that spell to see if everyone (in the New Avengers) was innocent and didn't pick up on the fact that Luke Cage's kid had glowy eyes.  It's also kinda interesting that both Strange and Stark are on opposite sides yet they are both in the Illuminati.

I just hope they tie up all the dangling stories first.  The Mighty Avengers are still fighting Ultron (and Iron Man is still a hot chick) and there's also the World War Hulk tie stuff where the two groups have basically put aside their differences.  Whatever happened to continuity?

It’s the event over five years in the making and now that the Skrulls’ plans have come to light, it’s time for Secret Invasion: Infiltration to be exposed! All Marvel titles bearing the Secret Invasion: Infiltration banner provide crucial tie-ins to the most anticipated event of 2008—Secret Invasion. If you want to know everything about the machinations of the shape shifting Skrulls, the secret agents hiding in the Marvel Universe and just how the heroes prepare for the most explosive battle of 2008, then you can’t miss an issue of the Infiltration!

In New Avengers: Illuminati #5, by the red-hot creative team of writers Brian Bendis, Brian Reed and artist Jimmy Cheung, the mysterious Illuminati come together to discuss the shocking discovery in New Avengers #31—the Skrull body of Elektra! As this evidence of invasion is presented to the group, they must decide what this means to the future of Earth and who they can trust! By the end of the issue, the Illuminati will never be the same again as a jaw dropping revelation with the team—and readers—stunned. War is declared…but by who?

Then, in Avengers: The Initiative Annual #1, from acclaimed author Dan Slott and a line-up of fan-favorite artists including Salvador Larroca, Clayton Henry, Patrick Scherberger and cover artist Jimmy Cheung, secrets of the Initiative are revealed! As the hidden origins of MVP, Armory, Hardball and more are brought to light, readers will gain insight into the inner workings of Tony Stark’s bold new vision…and into the Skrull invasion? You’ll never guess how it all comes together and just who is responsible for this deception!

This November, the next stage of the Skrull offensive is uncovered in Secret Invasion: Infiltration and there’s no going back for the Marvel Universe! Lives will be shattered as every hero and villain is forced to ask…Who Do You Trust?

Don’t miss the opening salvos in New Avengers: Illuminati #5 and Avengers: The Initiative Annual #1!

Marvel Comics On Sale 10/10/07...Zombies!!!

Added by G-Man on Oct 8, 2007

Filed under: New Avengers, Punisher, Runaways

Zombie Month continues and we get lots of cool variants.  They have absolutely nothing to do with the issues themselves but I still say, you can't get enough.  At least I can't.  I still crack a smile at seeing the Marvel characters zombified.  I do wonder how accessible they will be.  I know a lot of comic stores will grab all the variante before they can reach the shelves and jack up the price.  I get what they're doing, especially with the "dealer incentive" covers (where they get a variant copy for ordering "x" number of copies of the regular issue).  I persoanlly like the 50/50 covers, like with Spider-Man: One More Day.  Give me a choice in covers.  Sure if the price has been jacked up, you still have the "choice" to shell out more money for it.  It's just lame for the readers.  But we need our comic stores to stay in business so I won't cry about it anymore.  (At least for now).

We do have a new issue of New Avengers.  I want more on the Skrull thing but looks like we have to wait until the "Secret Invasion" story hits.  We're in the middle of the symbiote attack and more with the Hood.  I'm sure it will still be as good as always.  Linked to this is the Punisher War Journal World War Hulk crossover.   From the preview, it looks like Frank gets a hold a symbiote himself.  First a variation of Cap's costume, now a variation of Venom's.  C'mon Frank, just be yourself.  Don't give into the peer pressure!  Love the zombie cover, though.

And finally, a new issue of Runaways!!!  I won't go into how if feels soooo long in between issues.  I still love the series.  Not sure what it is.  And to think I dismissed the comic when it first came out because I thought it was just another teen team book dealing with teen angst and puberty stuff.  Just goes to show you what excellent writing can do.  This is a way better week for Marvel than last week.

Marvel Comics On-Sale 8/08/07

Added by G-Man on Aug 6, 2007

Filed under: New Avengers, Nova, Daredevil

Here's the list of Marvel goodies for this week.   Spider-Girl's been a fun read.  Almost like the classic Spidey tales without all the angst you have now a days.

Ed Brubaker's Criminal is a must read.  The man is brilliant.

Daredevil's been great too.  I'll probably pick up the Dark Tower guide book.

I just loved the Dark Tower series.  I still want more.

Exiles has been flying under the radar for some time.  It's like the old What if...? books.  Anything can go.  Teammates can die and don't come back like in the regular comics.

Punisher War Journal's been another fun read for me.  I had to stop reading Punisher for a while but haven't been let down with the writing and artwork here.

Let's not forget about New Avengers.  People are talking.  Who has been replaced by a Skrull.  After last issue, we have to wonder, is Spider-Woman a Skrull or what.  And what does the cover image below mean?  One of my favorite titles.

Hey True Believers, here’s your official list of comic books, collections and posters arriving in comic stores on August 8th, 2007. For more information on any of these titles, and on upcoming mighty Marvel releases, please visit http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?date=2007-08-08 or contact your local comic book retailer at 1-888-comicbook. The Avengers Battle The Autobots

Added by G-Man on Jul 18, 2007

Filed under: New Avengers, Autobots, Decepticons

Hot on the heels of the still-in-theatres movie, here comes the preview for the second issue.  Unfortunately I missed the first issue.  I'm a little torn over this series.  It doesn't happen in the "real" comic universe, so is it worth my time?  Maybe someone that's read issue #1 can tell me.  I keep forgetting to check if my comic store has any #1s left.  Probably not or I would've seen it.

The pop culture collision of the summer continues in Marvel & IDW Publishing’s New Avengers/Transformers #2 (of 4), as the Autobots and Avengers come to blows…with each other? Writer Stuart Moore and artist Tyler Kirkham assemble to bring you this clash of heroes…while Doctor Doom and Megatron lay in wait! But what is the connection between these diabolical villains? Why was Spider-Man taken hostage? Answers come fast and furious, but when the dust settles, there may not be anyone left standing to prevent Armageddon!

“In the debut issue, we built slowly to the big first meeting of these two famous groups, and here’s where the readers’ patience pays off,” said editor Bill Rosemann. “The Avengers--who have been pushed to a violent place due to the Decepticons chicanery--and the Autobots—who have rolled in to squash the rising tempers—run head-on into each other…as blood—and oil—will flow!”

Fans and critics everywhere are lauding New Avengers/Transformers, with Aaron Stueve of BrokenFrontier.Com raving that, “on this book [Marvel & IDW] do a bang up job… The story is at times subtle, at times sharp, and always good.”

“This a great book for fans to share with friends and family,” added Nick Marino of ComicNewsInternational.Com. “Tyler Kirkham has a great touch for the characters in this story.”

Robots In Disguise, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the most powerful villains either team have ever faced—what else do you need? It’s time to assemble and roll out with New Avengers/Transformers #2!

New Avengers #31 preview

Added by G-Man on May 19, 2007

Filed under: New Avengers, Echo, Elektra

This comic just keeps getting better and better.  It's usually the first I read the week it comes out.  It's also the one I look forward to next month as soon as I finish it.

Everything has been leading up to one revelation that will rock the Marvel Universe at its very core. There are no coincidences. There are no heroes who won’t be affected. There is no escape. When you’ve finished reading New Avengers #31, you’ll realize why this is the one issue you just can’t miss. The superstar creative team of Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu have been thrilling critics and fans alike with their new direction for New Avengers, but you never saw the last page of this issue coming!

If that weren’t enough, Marvel is also revealing the secrets of the Mighty Avengers in Mighty Avengers: Most Wanted Files, putting the spotlight on the newest Avengers from Ares to Ms Marvel, and shedding new light on your favorite villains! Fans new and old will discover something exciting about their favorite characters in this special look at Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Marvel also urges retailers to check their orders New Avengers #31, which lays the foundation for Marvel’s new direction and 2008’s Marvel Universe epic. This is where it all ends…and where it all begins!

New Avengers #30 Preview!!!

Added by G-Man on Apr 27, 2007

Filed under: Iron Man, Wolverine, Brian Michael Bendis, New Avengers, Avengers, Ms. Marvel, Doctor Strange, Leinil Francis Yu, Brother Voodoo, Ronin

This is one of my favorite comics.  This is going to be the big one.  We (supposedly) find out who this new Ronin is.  Place your bets.  The window's about to close.  And things don't look too good for Dr. Strange.  Man, first he gets shot in The Oath (great series) and now it looks like he's getting a sword through the chest.  Just when he's starting to get cool again.  What's going to happen when Hulk arrives?

The recent incarnation of the New Avengers doesn’t have it easy, forging their own underground movement against the Superhuman Registration act they consider unjust and finding themselves embroiled in conflicts with their former friends. But as readers will learn in New Avengers #30, it’s going to get worse before it gets better. As readers continue to learn how the New Avengers survived their conflict with Iron Man’s state-sponsored Mighty Avengers team in the past, they’ll also be thrilled to the New Avengers’ current conflict with the martial arts crime cabal known as the Hand! Throughout this top-selling story arc by award-winning writer Brian Bendis and red-hot artist Leinil Yu (one of Marvel’s Young Guns), fans have wondered just who is wearing the new Ronin armor and they’re about to find out in May.

Oh, and did we mention this all sets the stage for 2008’s top secret Marvel epic?

So don’t miss the series that ComicBookResources.Com’s Augie De Blieck called, “the premiere team title of the Marvel Universe.” Marvel advises retailers to check their orders on New Avengers, which not only ties into the best-selling ongoing Initiative storyline, but continues to sell out with each issue.

"2008's Top Secret Marvel Epic"?!?  Oh man.  Is this a good thing or does this mean another huge crossover that will require me to spend lots of money?  Either way, I'm excited.
