What's the point of New Avengers?

Okay, is it just me, or does the Heroic Age New Avengers just seem kind of pointless? I mean, when they were first formed, after Dissasembled, it made sense, having a team to replace the original Avengers, and then having them rival the Mighty Avengers after Civil War and the Dark Avengers during Dark Reign. But now, in the Heroic Age, it just feels like they're a team with no purpose. Consider: we have the Avengers, the main team, who will supposedly handle all the big threats, protect the world, etc. Then we have the Secret Avengers, who are supposed to be a preemptive strike force, and deal with all the espionage and whatnot. Then of course, we have the Avengers Academy, training the Avengers of tomorrow. Even the Thunderbolts have a place amongst all these Avengers books, as the team that offers villains a chance for redemption, and handles the missions that are to gritty, dark, and controversial for the Avengers to handle. With all these teams rebuilt by Steve Rogers seemingly for one specific purpose, why did he rebuild the New Avengers? What special purpose do they serve? Even the character choices are, quite frankly, outright dumb. Wolverine, Spider Man, and Hawkeye are all on the main Avengers team as it is, Wolverine somehow manages to be in New York and San Francisco(on two teams of X-men, mind you) at once, Hawkeye and Mockingbird are working with the WCA, the Thing is with the Fantastic Four, and Luke Cage was already tasked with leading the Thunderbolts by Steve Rogers. The only member who isn't seemingly engaged in five hundred other activites is Ms. Marvel, who, after how prominent she's been in the Avengers lately, should be on the main Avengers team. Oh, and they have Victoria Hand, their evil babysitter, who's supposed to be in prison. So what do you all think? Do the New Avengers have a purpose, or are they pointless?

Well that still seems kind of pointless, because street level and minor problems are the kinds of things that Spidey and Luke handle every day in their solo series outside of their teams, and having an entire team devoted solely to street level problems just seems pointless, and with the recent events taking place in Shadowland, with Daredevil and the Hand imposing martial law, it seems unnecesary.

It's not pointless. The Avengers max out at like 10 character. You really think 10 characters can police all 50 States & Other countries too? They can't.
Spider-Man cannot take out every street level threat. He's stationed in NYC and therefore only handles crime in NYC.So then what about LA,NJ,CHI etc.In fact most street levelers including DD are stationed on the east coast and or NY itself. So obviously they can't handle all street level threats because they are only covering a small area.

With that said.It doesn't seem pointless. The membership is what's pointless. They spread the Avengers membership to thin. Why there are some characters on both teams is beyond me.

I dont think the team is pointless, the main Avengers can only do so much. But i do dislike the fact that so many of the members are in other teams. They should try to have a little more newer heroes to be there. But so far the series have been entertaining, so i dont mind if the current rooster continues.

The New Avengers (post Civil War) have always been sort of the team that handles things that are beneath the notice of the major Avengers teams but still too much for any street level hero to handle.  I don't think guys like the Hood and his gang riveled with guys like Kang, Ultron and an invasion of Atlantis. And hey if Wolvie can handle being on multiple teams plus his own solo work, why can't others?

For me the thing that makes this team stupid is the redundant membership. They should really limit characters to one team.  IMO they should use the New Avengers as a team for new Avengers. So characters like Silver-claw, Triathlon, and Echo would have to be a member of the New Avengers before they got onto the main team.  Kinda like the B team for rookies to prove themselves.

they want to be their own avengers

The real point of New Avengers is to sell more books. I say take Ms. Marvel,  the Thing and anyone else in the book who isnt pulling double duty, add 'em to the core team and give Luke some time to spend with his family between Thunderbolts missions. There are already plenty of street level teams. I agree New Avengers seems kinda redundant.

as of the heroic age the New Avengers are dealing with demonic and extradimensional threats

They handle all magic and underground threats probably :P

They're around because Bendis wants them to be.

Post-disassembled the team was cool, but now? Now it's they same thing in every issue since the ending of the last volume. The only difference now is that the Thing is on the team and they aren't hiding anymore.

The main reason I like the team is not because of what their purpose is, but because of who's on it. We have Spidey, Wolvie, Luke, MM, Iron Fist, Jewel, Ms. Hand, even Squirrel Girl (the only "Sentry" any team needs). It's just fun to see them all together, and besides, the team will find its place eventually. After all, weren't the original Avengers just a second Fantastic Four but with a larger roster?
