I'm a believer in that every team has a purpose. The Avengers protect the whole world from big threats. The FF are "imaginauts", that make new discoveries everyday and have saved the world countless of times against threats from the stars or by guys like Dr. Doom. The X-Men are for mutant rights. I could go on and on with other teams, but you get the point.

But I'm kind of having trouble figuring out what the New Avengers are for. Granted, they were important when they first formed back in 2005, but ever since the Heroic Age, they've stepped aside for the main Avengers team. That's all fine and good, but why do they still exist? I don't think they have different motives than The Avengers, so that's not it. They're nowhere near powerful enough to face the threats that the Avengers or the X-Men can face. They aren't smart enough or well-funded enough to do what the FF do... So what are they for? What can they do that the Avengers, FF, X-Men, or any other team I can't name at the moment, can't?

And I'm really not trying to be a smart-ass, so I apologize to the team's fans if I've offended, but I'd really like to know.

They just sit around and eat. ¬_¬

The Avenge like, new school style. Really there only there so Bendis can hog all his favourite characters without anybody else getting in the way, with the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Annihilators and the Defenders there is really no need for the New Avengers.

Well, that theory lasted... I'm pretty sure that they said something like that in Avengers #1, perhaps its the other way round?

With the first run Bendis did, the team was basically a group unsanctioned by the government in the wake of Civil War, while Mighty Avengers was the team the government backed. Or something like that. After that, I don't know.
