blurred_view's New Avengers #7 - The Nanny Cometh! review

Good Point, Nighthawk. They Are the Defenders.

When Brian Michael Bendis wants to be funny, he can be pretty damn hilarious. This issue shows that as the team settles down in the aftermath of averting a mystical apocalypse to sort out what they are going to be about and how they are going to operate. This is something people have been waiting for to see just what will set the New Avengers apart from the rest and who will actually make up the team. It is not entirely satisfying in that regard, but it is still a strong and entertaining issue.

Dr. Strange officially joins the cast as the Sorcerer Still-Pretty-Good-But-Not-Supreme, and it works great. Strange joining the team is probably one of the most natural developments of this book. Of course Strange would become a New Avenger after he took them in before and after all he's gone through lately.

One of the best parts of this issue is where Jessica Jones tears into Luke Cage in front of everyone for his stubbornness and hypocrisy. It was nice in the immediate aftermath of Civil War, but it is time to get over it now. This scene manages to be both very funny and actually quite meaningful. A major chapter in Luke's life has ended, and he needs to move on now.

Also, Squirrel Girl becoming Luke and Jessica's nanny is probably the best use of the character ever. It is amazing how well she already fits in this role, and it is obvious that she will be a lot of fun. The only other character who may have worked as well is Stature, who does appear, but her current involvement in Avengers: Children's Crusade obviously prevents her from being an option. The entire interview scene for all the potential nannies really is hilarious. Fan(s?) of D-Man may take offense, but there really are so many great lines and appearances in it.

But what really steals the show comes at the end of the issue as the character who will be serving as this team's Jarvis comes in. It is truly glorious, and I am now looking forward to seeing him around most of all.

All that said, this issue still isn't completely satisfying when it comes to taking a moment to establish who this team is. We got our information for the Thing in the first issue. Dr. Strange fit quite naturally in with the team this issue. Iron Fist really needs no explanation. But why is Ms. Marvel here? Did Steve Rogers overlook her for the main Avengers team? Did she actually choose to be a New Avenger instead of an Avenger for some reason? Sure, she is Jessica's friend, but her presence on this team does need some explanation. This is even more true for Mockingbird. Isn't she running her own spy organization and admittedly somewhere more comfortable as a spy than superhero? Can we can something about this, please? And good lord, are we seriously going to have Spider-Man and Wolverine on both Avengers teams? Was this not just something for the first arcs? That is definitely something that needs to be addressed. It's just stupid and a waste.

Still, this is a very good issue and the type of issue the Avengers could really have used too.  It is easily the most entertaining comic of the week and provides a ton of stuff to look forward to in future issues. I have my problems with the team's lineup, but I still love this book.

I'm liking to New Avengers way more than regular Avengers but still didn't like the way BMB killed off Voodoo, that was a serious low blow that needs to be redone

@Midnight Monk: I'm okay with Dr. Voodoo's death. I wouldn't have been if his death meant that Strange became Sorcerer Supreme again and it was like Voodoo had never been in the role. But it didn't go down like that and Voodoo went out in out in a big hero moment. I think it's pretty clear that Bendis isn't done with this too. Voodoo's brother is still out there. The lack of any Sorcerer Supreme is something Marvel has said will be an ongoing problem. I wouldn't be a surprised at all if Bendis has a future story in mind that involves the rescue or revival of Dr. Voodoo.

Now, could Bendis just have used Voodoo instead of Strange for the team? I guess he could have. Voodoo would have been a natural fit too since the New Avengers did help him become Sorcerer Supreme. But I get the impression that Bendis doesn't want a Sorcerer Supreme on the team. Last time he had Strange on the team, response to it seemed to consist mostly of constant whining about how Strange didn't magic his way out of a falling airplane or this or that or generally just why Strange didn't magic his way out of every situation. I think Bendis prefers having a sorcerer of more limited ability on the team regularly.

totally agree on the Wolverine/Spiderman pairing, I understand their need, you need that acrobatic and funny character and you need that ruthless character who can cross the line..but it would have been nicer to see some less common characters..however with the squirrel girl choice it makes sense putting wolverine on the team..

Meanwhile over on Widowmaker and Hawkeye + Mockingbird, Bobbi seems to have made the decision that she is a spy not a superhero..yet her she is.

However I agree with you again that there is some good humour and heart in this. I always enjoy the aftermath comic when a new team is formed. I felt the Jessica Jones bit was just lovely and called for because Luke Cage needs a good smack around the head sometimes. I am also enjoying Victoria Hand and her involvement in the team, and I'm looking forward to Doctor Strange's involvement, I find I've liked him far more since he wasn't the Sorcerer Supreme.

Great review. I enjoyed this issue as well. I also agree about the line up. Ms. Marvel Is a favorite of mine so one part of me thinks she does not make sense on the team, she should be on the main Avengers, while another part of me is happy shes on this team because of how much i dislike the main avengers title. It looks like this team will be focused soely on the magical aspect of the Marvel universe, and Ms. Marvel has a weakness to magic, so it provides her with some story opportunities i guess.
I like wolverine and spider-man on this team and don't think they should be on the main avengers team. i really like the addition of Thing on the team though. Anyways, great review ha ha

Who leads this team by the way? If Luke is the leader, I wish his leadership skills were utilized in this comic the way it is used in the Thunderbolts.

The New Avengers barely survived their magical battle. It's time to clean up and figure out who the heck is going to be on the team.  The Good There isn't a lot of action in this issue but it's always nice to be able to take a breather and allow the characters to reassess everything. The New Avengers not only have a mansion that needs to be rebuilt, they also have to look at their own team. We've already seen Hawkeye leave the team (since he was also on the regular Avengers team).  We also find ...
