I was anticipating this as much as I was the Second Coming one-shot but I have to say this deserves a solid D grade. ZERO surprises, zero lasting ramifications (Even the "break up" will be undone by Second Coming) and some truly terrible dialogue. Pardon me...truly terrible RECYCLED dialogue. Selene's banter at the end beyond was almost interchangeable with Stryfe's from Messiah War. She even basically quoted his lines about X-Force coming at her with "their knives, claws and guns".
A few of my complaints and I apologize in advance for all the negativity:
-I had read the previews and was intrigued about the bit about “ghost walking”. But the result was just some Mr. Negative war paint to be teleported into battle with.
-The Bard/Wither/Selene love triangle…utterly useless. The promise to make do for Selene what Grant Morrison did for Emma (An admittedly lofty goal)= either failed or unfulfilled.
-Why bother teasing that a few souls got away on Utopia if in Legacy the escaped Destiny already said she can’t survive without Selene’s magic? I won’t spoil the other company’s crossover finale that had similarities to this but at least they were clear about this issue.
-I still think Bastion and his crew should have played some part in this, if even just to be the Deus Ex Machina bringing down Selene. That final battle looked, sounded and ended awful.
Messiah War wasn’t perfect and got a lot of flack but it was way more enjoyable than this. But that crossover came out of nowhere and took them by surprise. Necrosha was literally years of build-up.
Notice the trend? The opening one-shots are almost always good. I thought Utopia, Messiah War, Messiah Complex (The Endangered Species One-shot written by Carey) and Necrosha all had great opening chapters
