DC Comics unveiled their next big project earlier today just in time for this weekend's C2E2 convention in Chicago. This July the publisher will be re-launching their NATIONAL COMICS series which will focus on some DC characters we haven't seen in a while.

National Comics were first published in 1940 by Quality Comics. Quality sold many of its properties to DC Comics which later published many of these properties; some of which (i.e. Blackhawks, for example) survived the relaunch of the DC Universe last September. The re-launch of NATIONAL COMICS will focus on some characters that have yet to be seen in the DC Universe since the relaunch including Eternity, Madame X, Rose and Thorn and the Looker to readers. The first issue of NATIONAL COMICS will focus on Eternity and will be written by Jeff Lemire and feature the art of Cully Hamner.

    No Caption Provided

Formerly known as "Kid Eternity," Eternity is the story of Christopher Freeman who died prematurely and has been "given a second chance at life." If you don't recognize "Eternity" then you might be more familiar with his previous super-name, "Kid Eternity." "Kid Eternity" was a young boy that died during WWII by a Nazi gun ship while "Eternity" is now police coroner Christopher Freeman who dies prematurely, returns, and is given the power to raise people from the dead. While the Eternity's origin is different, it seems his power set will remain the same. The only question we have is, how will the new creative team explain Christopher Freeman's death? If you read Bryan Q. Miller's BATGIRL series then you already know that the "Kid Eternity" died in issue #12. Then again, he also died in JSA #1.

DC has also revealed the creative teams for the next three issues following the first featuring Eternity as well as a brief synopsis for each.

    == TEASER ==
MADAME X, written by Rob Williams with artist Trevor Hairsine and a cover by Fiona Staples, starts off with a clear vision of who did it — but the real challenge is trying to prove it. As an upstart law firm’s psychic consultant, MADAME X uses tarot cards to divine the truth behind cases, helping skeptical lawyers gather evidence that will hold up in court.

ROSE AND THORN, written by Tom Taylor with artwork by Neil Googe and a cover by Ryan Sook, is a Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde story about Rose Canton, a good girl with a very bad side: Thorn, an ass-kicking femme fatale out for revenge.
LOOKER, written by Ian Edington with art by Mike S. Miller and a cover by Guillem March, tells the story of Emily Briggs, a model who loved looking at herself in the mirror—until the day she couldn’t. Turned into a vampire, LOOKER prowls the dark underbelly of NYC’s elite modeling world, hunting all predators, including the creature that spawned her.

DC will use NATIONAL COMICS to reintroduce fans to some of their classic characters and in turn, gauge how well these characters are received in these single issue, self contained stories. Yet, there's the question of whether it's worth reintroducing characters (such as Eternity) if you are going to change their origins anyway. Why not just create new characters? What do you think of the news? What characters would you like to see that you haven't yet seen in the new DC Universe?

So the comic title is National Comics and it will just be featuring similar to DC's current DC Universe Presents. Didn't read DCUP so not sure if I'd pick this up. I don't mind One shots but a series that keeps bouncing around between different stories and characters never keeps me interested.

I find Kid Eternity to be a very hit-or-miss character, his last series was awful.

huh, I thought I was the only one who thought that. I wanted to like it, but bloody hell I found it really hard to follow a lot of the time. Some nice art in there though.

"Making their return" doesn't really apply to Madame Xanadu. She's borderline over-used right now, being a main character in both "Justice League Dark" and "Demon Knights." That seems to be where she works best, I'm not seeing the qualities that would make for a good solo book. I guess we'll see if her issue changes anyone's mind.

Rose and Thorn, STRANGE! I only just read that mini a few days ago. Never heard anything of them before then. Also, Madame X as in Madame Xanadu?

Glad to see Madame Xanadu once again. Love her Vertigo run. Amy Reeder is amazing. Wish she'd join that team.

@GalacticPunt:  It's only a one-shot, though I agree she is being used a lot. Although it feels kinda right that she's at the heart of the supernatural DCU imo.

I'm excited to see him here though, him ad Looker will be interesting picks.

It won't be focusing on anyone in particular. Each issue will be a one-shot and unrelated to previous issues.

eh trickery is not flattering, National Comics started as a patriotic comic staring Uncle Sam, after he left the series it was about a carnival barker; Kid Eternity, Madame Xanadu, Rose and Thorn and Looker have nothing even vaguely in common with the roots of this comic, they should have used it as an excuse to re-introduce Uncle Sam, that I would gladly pay for.

and really Madame X? pfff did somebody let Jim Lee and the 90's have "creative" input again?

@Supreme Marvel: No comics are getting cancelled. It's not an ongoing per se. It's a monthly oversized one-shot under a banner of National Comics. It's different than DCU Presents. DC will eventually cancel more books but probably not until issue 13.

Maybe they're just trying to test the theory that if you put the letter X on a title it'll be guaranteed to sell like hotcakes, not unlike how Marvel runs their company=P

I like both Jeff Lemire and Cully Hamner, so I'm in.

Oh, and isn't the whole point of the New 52 to reintroduce old characters and update their backstories accordingly? Because that's pretty much exactly what they did with Superman and Wonder Woman.

Hmmm, well I like the idea of reintroducing them I think the last part of your article addresses a finer point that if you're just going to totally change the origins, why not just make another character entirely? I kind of take this all the same way we did when we reintroduced Red Circle characters a few years back like The Hangman and The Web. Still, I might check these out.

The latest Red Circle was in continuity because The Web had a run in with both Stephanie Brown as Batgirl and Lois Lane.

If you read Bryan Q. Miller's BATGIRL series then you already know that the "Kid Eternity" died in issue #12. Then again, he also died in JSA #1.

He also "died" in the Teen Titans series after being tortured by the Calculator. Well, I'm not sure he can even died, but it was implied that's what happened.

I'm excited to see him here though, him ad Looker will be interesting picks.

That actually put me off of teen titans for awhile. Almost up until the New 52. It was like the titans didn't even try finding Kid Eternity! So I'm really glad he's coming back. I always felt he could be a lot bigger than he is if he just had a good writer.

I'm confused. Is this one series that shows other random characters in each issue rather than being about one character? Is it a whole line of other series so they don't have to go over 52 comics in DC? Are they just a group of one-shots? And why couldn't they just do this with DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS?

    They're a group of mini-series.

Ah, I see. Similar to Red Circle?

I guess that's fair to say, but its in-continuity with the original.

The latest Red Circle was in continuity because The Web had a run in with both Stephanie Brown as Batgirl and Lois Lane.

What I meant though, is that Red Circle isn't in continuity with previous Red Circle stories =P

Isn't Madame Xanadu already on Justice League Dark and Demon Knights?
