Sub-Mariner: The Depths #1

Another Cool Marvel Knights Book

Marvel is doing it again.  Namor is a tricky character to write.  Often he's written either extremely arrogant (which in a way, he should be) or simply boring.  What's good about these Marvel Knights book is they are set almost in the 'real world.'

Searching for Atlantis would be a mysterious expedition.  In the Marvel Universe, where superheroes are all over the place, the idea of Atlantis wouldn't be too absurd.  It's almost like it would just be accepted and there wouldn't be too much thought given to it.  In the world here, Namor is a rumor or a legend.  The guy set in search of Atlantis is an explorer that feels it is his mission to 'debunk' the outlandish.  I think we can all guess how Namor would take it if a submarine starting floating by his kingdom.

Peter Milligan does a great job creating this world and the thoughts of Randolph Stein, the explorer in search of Atlantis.  Esad Ribic's art is simply amazing.  The realism, lighting and detail blew me away.  The coloring throughout is very blue.  This also helps to capture the mood of the depths of the waters.   I enjoyed last year's Sub-Mariner comic and I'm liking this so far.  I never would've thought I'd be enjoying Namor's books again.

I'm giving it a 4.5 out of 5.

Here's a preview of the issue.  It's out tomorrow.

The latest offering from the red-hot Marvel Knights line offers a searing vision of Namor, the Sub-Mariner as you've never seen, brought to you by Peter Milligan (X-FORCE) and Esad Ribic (SILVER SURFER: REQUIEM)!

Atlantis. Throughout the ages, a few men have wondered if this fabulous place actually exists. Fewer have imagined that the city is protected by a wild and vengeful being, the very embodiment of the untameable depths themselves -- the Sub-Mariner. When a deep sea expedition mysteriously vanishes without a trace near the Marianes trench, legendary adventurer, Randolph Stein embarks on a journey that will rock him -- and his crew -- to their very core. Travelling deep into the dark belly of the sea, the men of the good ship, Voyager, are about to see things that defy description, that supersede their wildest imagination -- things that men aren't meant to see. Staring into the abyss, Stein will soon discover that the abyss can indeed stare right back at him.

Sub-Mariner: The Depths #1

Sub-Mariner Defends Atlantis In An All New Marvel Knights Series!

This looks and sounds great but does anyone besides me want a follow up to his last mini-series?  I want to see where all the Atlanteans are going to go.  Now they're spread across the world using the same technology as the sleeper cell Atlanteans.  I'm still a little bothered that Namor reappeared in The Order and had a run in with Tony Stark.  My problem is I don't normally read that series and somehow I missed the fact that Namor was appearing in it.

Namor is a complex character so this mini series should hopefully do his character justice.

Namor has protected Atlantis from intruders for decades, but when a new group of explorers descend upon his city, can he protect it from mankind? Sub- Mariner: The Depths #1 (of 4), will take you on a journey to the unpredictable depths of the sea. This is an Atlantis like you’ve never seen before! Fan favorite scribe Peter Milligan teams with acclaimed artist Esad Ribic, producing an all-new limited series that have you begging for more! Following in the tradition of the sold-out Spider-Man: Reign, Silver Surfer: Requiem and Logan, you can’t afford to miss this stunning new look at one of Marvel’s most enduring heroes!

Randolph Stein is a hero amongst men, a legendary adventurer with a thirst for the unknown that even the seven seas can not quench. There is a reason nobody has seen the fabled underwater city. A certain wing-heeled protector of the abyss will make sure that no secrets make it back to land, or will he? Prepare to strap yourselves in and take the plunge and experience a Sub-Mariner story like you’ve never before in Sub-Mariner: The Depths #1 (of 4)!

This post relates to: X-Men, Anita Blake, Namor

Not a big week for Marvel in terms of numbers but there some good stuff.  The next big X-Crossover begins.  I have mixed feelings about major crossovers.  Always have.  It was back during Batman: Contagion that I just got fed up.  I dropped all the Bat-titles except Robin and Nightwing.  I avoided No Man's Land even though big stuff went down.  I'm hoping they'll have the chapter number on the cover.

I'm also glad that Anita Blake First Death #2 is FINALLY coming out.  My goodness.

I also can't wait for Sub-Mariner.  I've never really cared for the character but I've really been liking this mini.  Good stuff.  If you haven't been checking it out, see if you can find the back issues or definitely pick it up when it gets reprinted.

This post relates to: Captain America, Namor, Spider-Man

Here's the list of Marvel Comics coming out this week.  As always, there's lots of good stuff coming.

Another great issue of Captain America.  Who would've thought that this series could continue with Cap being "dead" and all.  I cannot say enough about Ed Brubaker.   This is defininitely at the top of my reading list.
We also get Namor vs Wolverine.  Someone has to send Logan to charm school.  The man just can't seem to get along with anyone.  But in his defense, Namor can be an arrogant _____ at times.  He is royalty so he's entitled to an extent.  You should be reading this Submariner mini.  I've never really cared for Namor before but the writing here has made me more of a fan.

Then we have Ultimate Spidey.  It's going to take some time to get used to the absence of Mark Bagley's pencils.  Thankfully Mr. Bendis is still on board.  He really seems able to nail the character of Young Peter.

This post relates to: Wolverine, Namor, Matt Cherniss, Peter Johnson, Phil Briones, Leinil Francis Yu, Professor X, Venom

They've recently had a run-in in Wolverine over Nitro.  That's when we first saw Namor's Sleeper Cell soldiers.  I like where this mini's going.  Place your bets on who's going to win.

900 Americans are dead and S.H.I.E.L.D. is pointing the finger at Namor! In Sub-Mariner #3, Namor races against time to find the location of the rogue sleeper cell agents before they commit more heinous crimes in the name of Atlantis. But is he ready to battle Wolverine? Writers Matt Cherniss and Peter Johnson (Powerless) and up-and-coming artist Phil Briones (White Tiger) are making waves with the new limited series about Marvel’s first mutant and his constant struggle against the “weaklings” of the surface world. Also, this action-packed issue features magnificent cover art by Young Guns Reloaded star Leinil Francis Yu (New Avengers).

After plowing through Iron Man and his armada of S.H.I.E.L.D. submarines, Namor searches for his old ally, Charles Xavier, only to find the Canadian berserker ready and waiting for a scrap at the gates of the X-Mansion! Meanwhile, sinister figures are lurking in the shadows; the rogue Atlanteans make plans to murder their “traitor king,” but the vicious Venom might beat them to the punch if he develops a taste for seafood!

The conflict heats up in Sub-Mariner #3; will all of this tension lead to an inevitable war between Atlantis and America…and more importantly, will that war result in Namor’s death? One thing is certain, the monarch of the seas won’t go down without a fight – Imperius Rex!

This post relates to: Namor

Namor's back!

Terrorists have attacked the American mid-west and the fingers point to…Atlantis? Namor the Sub-Mariner is lord of Atlantis, so is he the man behind these attacks or is it the actions of a sleeper cell within his own nation? Those questions and more will be answered this June in Marvel’s brand new Sub-Mariner #1 (of 6) limited series, written by Matt Cherniss & Peter Johnson (Powerless), with art by Phil Briones (White Tiger). This is Namor like you’ve never seen him before, fighting SHIELD—and Iron Man—to make sure those responsible pay in full!

Marvel urges retailers to check their order on Sub-Mariner #1 which not only features one of Marvel’s most enduring heroes, but also ties into the wildly popular Initiative storyline and comes directly out of Namor’s pivotal appearances in the mega-hit Civil War. Now Namor must defend himself from both those who seek his crown and those who seek to control him. It’s the world against Namor—and the world better watch out!

Also, don’t miss out on your chance to own the new poster (on-sale now) featuring superstar artist Michael Turner’s stunning cover to Sub-Mariner #1!
