When people find out that they are special they usually react in one of two ways. Either they decide to use their gift responsibly, by working hard at school if they are intelligent for example. Or they use it for their own gain, to continue the previous example they would mess around and count on their natural talent to get them through their studies. Jon Falcon was special, not only in the sense that he had powers that set him apart from the rest of humanity, but also in that on discovering this he took neither option.

The problem was that Jon, an assumed name by the way, had been special since the age of six in one way or another. First he was a enhanced super-soldier charged with defending humanity against an aggressive alien threat. Then he was a vampire, full of hate and impotent rage. Then he was a powerful warlock, using magic to achieve what his vampirism couldnt. Then he was human. Weak and soft and mortal. All because of a girl. Another vampire to be precise. Her name was Gwen and she was his world, he would have died for her and in many ways he did. In order to save her he went up against Arrow, the lord of hell. Their fight was predictably short. Gwen lost all memories of him and he lost everything that made him special.

So when he discovered that he could hear the thoughts of those around him you would have thought he would be overjoyed. He was still special, he was still different to the teeming masses. But no. In the short time that he was human he had found that the loss of Gwen could be dealt with. Nothing was expected of him and so he could easily wallow in remorse and self doubt without doing anything to the world around him. But now that he was psychic he felt as if he had an obligation. So he started drinking and hasn't stopped since. As if in response to this his powers have increased a thousandfold. Where at one point he could only hear the thoughts of those around him he can now hear every conscious being in existence. Furthermore he gained a whole host of other powers, allowing him to literally do anything.

This brings me back to my original point. In his shoes many people would have gone mad with power, taken over the world and indulged their every whim. Considerably fewer would be those who chose to use the power for good, fight the good fight against the many evils that assailed the world. A few would even have tried to get Gwen back. But not Jon. He did nothing. He pretended that his powers didn't exist and tried to get on with his life. It is this that truly made him special.
