Evidently my love/hate relationship with Grimm Fairy Tales goes on.  It is a very specific love/hate relationship though as it breaks down almost evenly into two different areas.  On the one hand I generally love the stories which are told internally as they give me as a female comic reader a healthy dose of female characters to be interested in.  On the other hand the covers are generally pretty juvenile and downright exploitative of women.  It is not fair to say that I dislike all the covers, some of them have actually paid homage to some pretty interesting characters, some of whom like Marilyn Monroe are ones that I have a fascination with.  For every nice cover though there are probably ten that are just excuses to show women as comic likes to show them.  A while back I thought that issue 69 of Grimm Fairy Tales had gone a little over the top by including its two main characters in a sexually suggestive position.  Beyond my low expectations for the covers the artists may have in fact outdone themselves with two new covers recently.  In one from Grimm Fairy Tales 74 Sela spills ice cream on herself while wearing a bikini.  Taking that up a notch in Myths and Legends 18 what looks like to be Samantha and Sela are each sharing an ice cream cone, until Samantha spills hers on Sela’s breasts and is in the process of licking it off.  Once again the covers fail to impress.  I get that the group of series has an effect it is trying to accomplish, by hooking in some readers with the gratuitous covers.  That this influx of cash allows the interiors to continue I guess is something which benefits me by keeping these stories and characters going.  Still I would be happier overall if they could at least tone this down a little to at least the realm of likely exploitable occurrences, not just some derivation of male fantasies.
