Greatest 12 Characters of the 1960's

Who is on this list, what this list is about and how they got on the list!

Stop!  Marvel Time.
Stop!  Marvel Time.
Synopsis
This is one of a set of lists I made showing a progression of the greatest characters in a heroic style throughout time. Focusing for the most part on one decade at a time. The heroes that we know and love today were inspired by heroes before them. Some are even real people who moved into folklore. Before comics there were pulp magazines. Before that there was dime novels and before that was the penny dreadfuls. There were many others as well like Gothic novels, story papers and yes even a real novel.

The List
This is a list of the 12 best characters that made their debut in between 1960 and 1969.  These would be characters who will go on to be the biggest influences in comics either directly or indirectly.  In other words these will become great inspirations to future comic characters and stories. Right now they are in order of year.

New Stuff
The 1960's is one of the greatest decades for unique comic characters right along with the 1930's.  It was in the 1950's and 1960's that many DC Characters were revamped but the amount of Marvel Characters that came out of 1960's had a bigger impact on comics than any decade that came after.  It could easily be called the Marvel Decade.

List items

  • Starting as Kid Flash in 1960 in the 110th issue of the Flash Wally West soon took over the Flash mantle and became the world's favorite speedster until his uncle Barry came back dividing Flash fans perhaps forever.

  • That's right Spider-man. Spider-man is widely considered one of the absolute best and greatest heroes of all times he can even be mentioned in the same breath as Superman and Batman and he has only been around since 1962 in the Amazing Fantasy #15.

  • In the 1960's Marvel couldn't miss even when re-making a character for their universe who was from the Norse Religion. Thor first appeared in Journey into Mystery #83 in 1962.

  • Starting in 1962 in the first Issue of the Incredible Hulk he has made a strong impact on comics.

  • Starting in 1963 in Tales of Suspense #39 Iron Man became another of the Many great Marvel heroes to come out of that decade.

  • In 1963 Nick Fury made his first appearance in the 1st issue of Sgt. Fury. Ever since that time he has had many transformations even changing his nationality but he is loved by many and is still a big name in the Superhero world.

  • In 1963 Magnus made his first appearance in Magnus the Robot Fighter #1. he had a rough road but became one of the greatest heroes of all times.

  • Year after year in the 1960's Marvel produced new hero after new hero. These characters were not just huge but they became great. Dare Devil got his own self titled series Daredevil #1 in 1964.

  • In 1965 Spock would first appear in the episode the Cage of Star Trek as the second Officer under Captain Pike. He may not have been the Captain but he was before Kirk. I couldn't ignore the impact Star Trek has on comics and I couldn't just pick one. Picking the Federation of Starfleet as a team didn't sit well with me either. I had to pick someone to represent the nearly 1,000 episodes, 12 motion pictures, novels, books and of course comics that came from that first episode. Star Trek Universe is just as big as any single comic universe.

  • Loved by many hated by others Silver Surfer made his debut in in 1966 in Fantastic Four #48.

  • In 1967 Captain Marvel made his first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes #12. Unfortunately this hurt later appearances of the Real Captain Marvel, Billy Batson from the 1930's due to their names being the same. This Captain Marvel has had many versions but has been a great hero to come out of the 1960's.

  • In Vamprilla #1 in 1969 Vamprilla made her first appearance and she has been sucking ever since. Perhaps not the greatest hero or even a villain. Vamprilla is to be reckoned with.
