Superman # 154 was Ed McGuinness's first issue in which he drew Superman and I have been hooked on his work ever since. The art in this issue is very good, especially the full body shots of Metallo and the detail gone into the Metal Men. Ed's drawings are very distinct and while they are not realistic they are full of style. The coloring works well, being vibrant at the right times as well as subdued when it needs to be. Cams' inking really adds to every panel and makes the shadows look very believable. I do have two complaints with this issue however. Number one is the CG Brainiac. It is very obvious he is CG and it clashes with the artwork. I personally would have liked to see Ed give it a shot. My second problem is the story. While the fighting is great, everything else takes a back seat. The city's transformation could have been shown more along with the other supporting characters. And the idea of bringing back Blue Superman did not sit well with me at all. Besides these gripes the issue is great. It is nice to see where Ed started and to compare it with his work in Superman/Batman. And the panel where Superman and Lead fly after Metallo? Brilliant.
