Holly Cross had been told at a very young age that she was bad seed. Her beloved father made it constantly clear that she had to repent for her "sins", that she was of no good and being that she was born a woman and it was woman who had tempted man away from God's graces; she had to make the extra mile to ever be considered good.

Characteristics
Real name: Anita Marie West
Is a member of: The New-Outsiders
Age: Early twenties
Height: 5"7
Weight: 125 lbs
Eyes: Gray
Hair: Black

Origin

    Under the care of her Father, Reverend Nathaniel West, Anita Marie West was given her faith in Christianity. Anita's mother was a woman of weak health and was often unable to provide Anita with attention and leaving her upbringing to her father. Reverend Nathaniel was not a cruel man at least not through his own eyes. The Reverend believed what he did he did for love of his daughter. When he held her head under water nearly drowning her every morning he reminded her she was God's child and must live the day in honor of him. When he kept her hair cropped short and told her she was not pretty at all, he was keeping her humble and making sure she did not turn out vain like other girls. When he beat her he made it so no man would ever be tempted by her body. When he kept her locked up in the basement it was so she would appreciate the sunlight God had given. Long before she knew what was happening a rebellion was in the making within her. On her way home from school she was caught from behind and dragged into an alley by a man who has every intention of raping her. She struggled to no avail as her captor pushed her into the piled up garbage bags and whispered the words that would change her forever, "Don't fight it, Darlin'. I'm a man. I got strength you just weren't blessed with" as he laughingly yanked the crucifix around her neck. As her fingers closed over an empty coke bottle she replied, "I'm a woman...I get to cheat!". She shattered the bottle over her attacker's head and repeatedly stabbed him with the broken bottle. Anita in her shock and fear of her own actions ran home and bathed before her father came home. Her first "mortal sin" was mysteriously unheard of by the media, the police or anyone for that matter. She took this strange luck as a sign that God was watching over her and knew it was all in self-defense. Unfortunately for her it wasn't God who took as interest in her that day. It wasn't God who took her into an underground school for assassins and it wasn't God who said "Sometimes it takes a demon to bring a piece of Heaven to earth". Theodore Macintyre X AKA "The Pedagogue" (a name the uneducated mix up with appropriately in his case with the word "pedophile") took the 14 year old Anita Marie West in as his newest and hopefully brightest student, training her till she became the number one among his top 5 students and giving her the privilege of making her name in the underworld. Thus the birth of the notorious Holly Cross.
    Holly did give each of her marks a sporting chance asking them if they would choose to stop upsetting her clients and "repent" to which if they answered "Yes" she would leave them with a burn mark reminding them what awaits them if they stray from the good path. She'd return with all sorts of fire for them to feel when they strayed the path they promised her they'd keep walking and after their judgment Holly would be handsomely rewarded with the root of all evil which she would them anonymously donate to the church.

Powers     Holly didn't discover she was a mutant till she was 19. This discovery nearly cost her her life as a massive headaches visited her without warning and dangerously enough when she was on one of her assignments. It was through sheer luck that she managed to complete the assignment as the recoil from the gun her target had been using sent him down an elevator shaft. At first she took it as a sign of divine intervention as it became clear she was beginning to hear the thoughts of other people. it wasn't until a fellow assassin by the name, Lee Williams took her to the Xavier School of gifted children that she discovered that she in fact inherited the mutant gene from her mother

Kindred is the group of assassins that molded Holly into the powerful assassin she now is. The eldest members are Soutine, Harlot and Macabre, followed by The lovebirds then Lee Williams. Holly is the youngest and is seen as their baby. Upon her graduation Holly received a dagger that would always remind her that if the Kindred needed her she would have to answer their call or face the consequences.

Angelica Fa Moretti AKA "The Queenling" (Gunfire) I mean Red Queen!

Holly soon ran into financial troubles as the competition was high and after moving out of her father's house when her mother died she was finding migrating made it hard for her to get assignments. It was until Lee Williams recommended her to Angelica Fa Moretti the daughter of the Mafia Princess, Michelle Fa and Doriano Moretti. Angelica happens to be a 15 year old genius, a freshman in Harvard University taking up political science and is currently top of her batch. The Fas and the Morettis were two minor mafia families who barely made a blip in the crime world. Michelle and Doriano were called upon to unite the two families and hopefully help them gain power in Eclipse city. Angelica calls herself the "Red Queen" but to her disappointment is known under the name "The Queenling".

Alastar Barton AKA Soutine
Alastar is an Irish assassin and goes about his assignments with a somewhat artistic flair thus earning his nickname, Soutine. To him the kill is a passion just another art, like painting or playing the piano. It's not just a job for him, it is a way of life. He's a notorious seducer and is rumored to have been having a love affair with Tori and Terry...at the same time without either of the sister's knowledge. Despite his handsome features he's always unnerved Holly and she does her best to keep her distance from him.

Christian Jones AKA Da Vinci
Christian was Alastar's first and only pupil. He comes from a somewhat religious background much like Holly but instead of praising God like she does he defies him in every way he can. He's a serial killer and not assassin but he will pull a few jobs if the time arises he's in a somewhat financial peril. Holly has never met him but she often reads of his work in the papers and shudders.

Evangeline Sawyer

  Evangeline or as she prefers to be  called, Sawyer is the first daughter of Henry Sawyer III one of the worst crime lords in Eclipse city. Evangeline is the only one of Holly's target who's contract Holly denied. Coincidentally Evangeline went to the same Private Girl's school as Holly and though they never considered themselves friends Sawyer always greeted Holly good morning instead of ignoring her like the rest of the girls in St. Joan of Arc's Academy. Evangeline later adopts the name "Avenger".

Jared and Easter AKA The Lovebirds

"Classmates" of Soutine, Harlot and Macabre they're known as the "Lovers" due to their twisted relationship. Like Bonnie and Clyde, Mr. and Mrs. Smith theses two are a two in one deal and are often chosen for their two in one deal. Despite their effective partnership neither of them work well in teams due to the fact they only watch each other's backs and no one else's.

Lee Williams
 The famous Lee William also known as "The Writer" is quite known for his great murder mystery novels "The London underground series" under the pen name, Jonathan Darcy he has sold over a thousand copies all over the world. Lee is actually a die hard romantic a trait developed for his love of poetry and fine art and develops quite the crush on Anita even though she was 14 when he met her and he 17. What lee lacks in style we makes up for in enthusiasm and efficiency.

Victoria and Teresa Jules ("Tori" and "Terry") AKA Harlot and Macabre

      Tori has blonde hair with brown highlights while her sister, Terry has brown hair with blonde highlights. The two are identical twins save their hair coloring it is difficult to tell them apart. Tori, the older of the twins (by 20 minutes) is the second master that help train Holly Cross. Tori was literally hell on Holly due to the fact Holly's entrance took her place as the Pedagogue's favorite,  so the two hate each other to a special degree. Shortly after training Holly, Tori dropped out of being an assassin and became a pimp opening a whore house she calls "Diamond Geisha", she did this surprisingly for a noble cause (much to Holly's annoyance and disbelief).
Terry is a slightly disturbed woman due to the problems during her birth. She is not careful or organized enough to become an assassin so the Pedagogue assigned her as torturer. Terry has no sense of right and wrong and only knows what her sister tells her to do. In a way she is still an innocent.

Holly was a murderer and during her years as an assasin there came a hero that every once in a while would stop her....The Observer. Once Holly was given an assignment to take out a man named Walter Z. Foxtrot. It was a simple enough task, he seem to be an ordinary fellow, so ordinary he was not even financially equipped to pay for a body guard much less offer to pay Holly double to ignore the assingment to assassinate him. Holly would track him everyday but when night fell she mysteriously lost track of him. Mr. Foxtrot turned out to an alien from a planet in a neighboring galaxy. A trait of his race was the ability to shapeshift to adapt to the different atmospheres of the planets they chose to visit. The cat and mouse game stretched from days to weeks to months until Holly had stopped tracking him and picked up on other assignments to fill her time.

You Are Carefree and Passionate
You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.
You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.
You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone.
You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together.
At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together.

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.
You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts.
You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.

You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection.
You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.
You have the classic "Type A" personality.

You are a seeker. You often find yourself restless - and you have a lot of questions about life.
You tend to travel often, to fairly random locations. You're most comfortable when you're far away from home.
You are quite passionate and easily tempted. Your impulses sometimes get you into trouble.

It is no secret that the art of Jason Rubin's comic, "Iron and the Maiden" is beautifully done but on closer inspection the art itself has a whimsical feel to it. By the shpe of the characters' eyes alone you can see a sort of Disney-esque approach which if you've read Iron and the Maiden you would realize is unbecoming of for the sort of violence that goes on here. I would recommend that they find the artists who worked with Alan Moore or Frank Miller on their dark comics.

When I first saw the cover of Iron and the Maiden I fell in love, after I read the synopsis of the series I was pining for it which is why I am also very critical of it. How could something with such beautiful art, such an intriguing concept and a catchy title not make it? The last book itself is a cliff hanger? Did Jason Rubin give up? Did he pass away? Is that an excuse? Michael Turner (May he rest in peace)'s "Fathom" lived on after him as did his "Soulfire" so why is "Iron and the Maiden" still in a frozen state in the no longer published catacombs?

Back to this issue. Who is Michael Irons and why is his character so ambigious? When he storms into the Order's territory he is cool and calm, so the cool dark quiet type? No. Later on we see Michael lose his temper and grab Kevlin at the neck of his shirt. So which is it? Is Michael a hot tempered grunt not unlike Vegeta from Dragonball or is he more cool and broody like Angel the vampire with a soul?

Whoever Michael Irons is he's a big bad sydicate member and you'd think he can have any girl there is but he stops and begins to want to show mercy to one teenager he happened to stumble upon wearing a white nightie?

Which reminds me. How is it that Angel jumps out of the way when Joey starts shooting? You'd think a big sister like her would take a bullet for her younger siblings, right?

I don't know I just wish they had worked on this a little more because I really like the concept and the art and feel given time and hard work Iron and the Maiden could have become one of those praised original concepts rivalring that of Marvel's Runaways.

Ok, this comics is starting to look more and more like a fashion magazine. There are just so much close-ups and poses, not to mention Donna and BB's constant costum change. The all J-names was really...weird...I mean was that a coincidence or did their "Daddy" make sure their mothers (who have never met each other) made sure they named their children like this?
What's up with Raven? She said they were using her to open the portal but how? I don't see how they're making her do anything...Plus is it just me or the writers are really forcing Raven to change into her cartoon counterpart. BB pointed this out when her asked her if she was going to go all noble and ask him to kill her, which in turn would normally be a very Raven-like response but instead she tells him "no way" with a very unRaven-like attitude. And as much as I love cartoon Raven I don't like comic book Raven is straining to be more lik her.
Jesse's power was kinda cool and a little too much like Envy in Full Metal Alchemist.
The whole thing where they got greedy was really predictable but suprise suprise it was really Raven who did that. It seemed out of no where though, I mean how come we've never seen her use this "greed" power. Personally I thought it'd be cooler if she had had "pride" as her so called sin power.
I like the part where we see BB taking care of Raven, holding her hair out of her face while she hurls but didn't they break up? and the cause of that has still yet to be revealed which is really starting to annoy me. And Nightwing and Starfire just had sex and now the team's back together...again fighting Trigon...DOES ANYONE ELSE FEEL LIKE WE'RE GOING IN A CIRCLE?
And the whole "Together Forever" thing in unison...ick...save it for a sitcom guys...a disney one at that.

Time

First of all I can not be expected to believe that the battle between Iron and Petunia actually lasted five hours. I mean...c'mon, isn't that a bit of an exaggeration? I don't care how doped up they are on R0id somebody in that fight must have gotten a little bit tired! Notice how in the front page you have a clock in Central Station and the face clearly shows 12 noon. So give or take the battle must have taken place in the afternoon while the sun was still up and okay as you flip through the pages you can see where the shadow positioning changes (Kudos to the attention to detail) so you know that the time is passing them by while they fight but later you see Angel on the roof with Drop Dead Mike and the moon is high up in the sky, glowing in the darkness of the city (bad attention to detail the stars...impossible for a city with that many bright lights that the stars would not be outshined) meaning that the fight continued way into the night. That's....really unbelieveable.

History

I believe Jeph Loeb once said that in comics you can't go wrong with a pretty girl, monsters and flying cars. Well...may be he has yet to read Iron and the Maiden. Iron and the Maiden seem to take their cue from StarWars and Fray (both excellent works) in combining the classics of history with the dream of future. But the key to this is combinging the best of the past with the faults of the future not the other way around. You can't combine the mistakes of the past with the coolness of the future. I mean that's why the mistakes of the past ususally stay in the past...because by now we have learned from them and moved on.
I mean, look they have flying cars but they still used railroad trains? And the clothes! maybe it's the girl in me but I think some female perspective is definitely necessasry in the comic book world. The clothes!! I mean you don't see us doing a come back to the one sided scrunchie pony tail look they had in the 80's do you? Of course not! Of course we see a hint of the past fashions coming back like bootleg pants and platform shoes but that's all they are! hints! there is no way the future want to walk around in a toga anymore (with not accessories *gasp*). C'mon! it's the future and we're still sporting suspenders? Guys take a cue from batman beyond...new world, new fashion sense.

Dialogue

Speaking of what else is new, new dialogue! I noticed  the dialogue is in a so much larger font than other comics. I mean...that's kind of a like an "I don't want to put more effort in the dialogue" paper you write for school...yeah I know for a fact teachers hate those. Well, I don't like it either! C'mon I don't want empty headed characters I want them pretty AND smart!

Cursing

"The Chase Whore"?!?
Say that one more time and I'll smack you!! Geez! people curse at a lady one in a while but when you do it to much it loses it's impact and just boomerangs to how much you look like a loser. Everyone kept calling Angel "The Chase Whore" it was almost like her nickname heck! I'm suprised it hasn't become one of her aliases!. I'm sorry but that part REALLY got annoying. Like what I said in fashion the same applies in curses.

In Batman Beyond: Shway = cool
In Melaka Fray: a spin = a lie
                            toy = bad
                            spled = good
                            lurk= vampire
                           rocketship =cool
Firefly: Gorram = God Damn
             Rutting = Fucking

Ahem...well you get the picture...

This issue just felt really sloppy and I was really looking forward to itbecause I really enjoyed the first issue, so it's kind of a let down.

Much as I love Michael Turner and Aspen comics it would seem they would care more to quantity rather than quality when it comes to the pages within their books. I mean I love pin-up and free pages traight from the sketch book and I don't mind the occasional advertisment here and there but there seems to be more of all theses than the actual story. But what little I was able to read of Iron and the Maiden...I loved!
The assassination sequence was beautiful. They sent nothing but a "brose" (a rose with a "b" in it) that would endanger the life of Mr. Johnson. Did Big Daddy know about Mr. Fong? Who cares? He sent Michael Irons to do the job and he could trust that Michael Irons did the job. I love it! I love how Master Fong simply went on his merry way after his debt was paid. I love how Mr. Johnson who was so smug and irritatingly cocky at first got what was coming to him.
Course it doesn't hurt that Michael Irons and Angel Chase are both easy on the eyes and this particular comic book enthusiast has a weakness for pretty characters...What doesn irriate me is how short the story was, how fast it all went and how THIS IS THE ONLY AVAILABLE ISSUE IN MY COUNTRY AND I HAVE NO WAY OF GETTNG THE NEXT ISSUES!!
*sighs* well, it was good while it lasted and for all those out there who do have access to this comic I recommend it.

I was really worried about this latest issue. I mean what else it there to do? Who else can they battle? Where on earth can a bunch of kids who are new to the hero villian scene find their own arch nemesis? SUPRISE! An awesome concept from the start! Karolina's being blamed for the destruction of her homeoworld! Now we all know Karolina shouldn't be held responsible for what happened at her wedding but that's what makes the concept so perfect! Irrational villians who think they're on the right side of the chess board!
I'm a little dissapointed with how Old Lace isn't seen as much. I was upset with Whedon's version when Old Lace was barely seen at all but I excused it because true enough her place in the past would have attracted far too much attention but now they're back in the modern world where weird is slightly more acceptable and she still isn't seen as much! She's the last link the readers have with Gert Yorke (may she rest in peace).
I'm sick of everyone complaining about the art. If ya'll think you can do better then go offer your services to the creator's no need to bash the artist (though polite crtiique is always welcome).
And Klara! I'm sorry if you think she's an uptight bitch but seriously? She's 12! and she was forced to marry and have sex with a really old guy who beat her when he was drunk. I think she's allowed to be a little bit messed. I personally think she'd make a good addition to the team. Now we have...
The funny guy = Chase
The nice guy = Victor
The serious and can be harsh...person =Xavin (Who I thought decided to be a girl now!! sheesh make up your mind)
The leader and...ahem...person who slutty tendencies =Nico
The nice girl = Karolina
The baby = Molly

and now Klara who can be the resident shy girl!
I like it! and I can't wait to see her character develope a little more, the way Xavin's did.

I was hoping for a lot more than just a "bum bum bum" moment. This is so typically Joss Whedon to foreshadow an ending to a story then completely sweep you off your feet by writing the opposite of what you expected. I thought Klara was completely out of the picture, I thought that Lillie would go with Victor and I thought Chase went to bring back Gert. You'd think such a loyal fan of Sir Whedon would anticipate that with Joss Whedon nothing is as it seems. At any case I applaud Joss as he again suprises me. It's like James Marsters said once "We never know what you're (Joss) going to do!". This last issue was worth the wait and with the end it just keeps you begging for more. They kiled off Renee too soon I haven't even found out all that muc about her, like her quirks, her habits, her skill as a slayer...I just remembered in the series that I felt more grief towards Amanda's death than I did Chloe's. Let's face it, the only time we really feel bad when'a character dies is when we truly know them, get a feel about who they really are. Time really is not the issue. I was expecting Raven's popularity to really take flight, so to speak in her own mini series. When the cover first came out it seemed a little strange that Raven who's usually dark and gloomy to have such a colorful cover art. The expected dark shades of blue, black and gray certainly not the hot pink background with our dark bird smack dab in the middle sticking out like a sore thumb. With all due respect to Mr. Scott he does have his own unique and valuable style but it is better for the likes of Robin or Big Barda, characters with the multi-colored costumes. As I flipped through the first few pages I was suprised to find the ensemble they had put raven in. The quiet, conservative Titan was now sporting a red mid riff, a small leather mini skirt with high slits and high socks over fishnet stockings! adrastic fashion change after we last saw her sporting sweat shirts and baggy jeans. The story line was also confusing as it involved a young girl in a coma and the need to restore her "emotions" in order for her to heal her own body...

As Spike would say "Bloody Brilliant" this is by far the best issue this series has offered. It's comes together so beautifully as we see the painful life the slayers still have to live. There is a lot of philosophy within this issue that actually help inspire me to write a certain thesis paper that impressed my professor. The best issue and it actually stands on its own. It does not need the past issues to explain what's going on. At first it had me confused especially with the demon declaring that Buffy Summers is once again dead. That part had me rolling my eyes and thinking "What? again? whatever" but realizing that it was in fact a decoy Buffy herself mentioned in the first issue of Season 8 then things started to fall into place. This unknown girl who just went into the slayerhood so willingly despite her fear and uncertainty was deeply moving. Her last sentence telling the readers how insignificant it is to her that she be recognized as someone other than Buffy's decoy was near tear jerking as a fellow clasmate simply said "Wow, that's a really sad story". Even as I write I know I can't write a good enough review that will capture how much I love this particular issue in the Buffy series.

I think it's time too lose some composure and gain some insanity. Once more I'm about too cross the line, and like always it'll chage me forever!
