G~man's Blog: What If? X-Men & What If? Annihilation Sell-Out

This post relates to: Jeff Parker, Wolverine, Ed Brubaker, Spider-Man

I don't know what the deal is.  Why is it the What If? stories are so good now.  The last few times Marvel has put out the one-shots, they were just okay.  As I've said before, Marvel is putting some top talent on these and not just handing them out to a mediocre writer (no offense).  But I'm talking about Marvel getting Mr. Ed Brubaker to write the What If...Civil War.  You know it's going to be good (even if Tony Stark lives).

As for the Spider-Man/Wolverine story, sounds interesting.   Spider-Man a killer?  That's the beauty of the What If's, anything goes.  Jeff Parker is a good writer too.   Putting Spidey and Wolvie together reminds me of the original Spider-Man vs Wolverine (you know, the one where Peter and Ned Leeds go to Berlin (and Ned is murdered), Wolverine figures out Peter is Spidey by his scent, etc.  Classic stuff.

Marvel's been selling out a few books lately.  That's good.  I think it's a good sign that the "industry" is getting better and people are becoming more interested in comics again.

Marvel is pleased to announce that What If? X-Men: The Rise and Fall Of The Shi’Ar Empire and What If? Annihilation have sold-out at Diamond (though copies may be available at the retail level). This marks the third straight sell-out for this year’s What If? specials following the sell-out of What If? Planet Hulk.

“I almost fell off my chair in glee when I heard this,” said Editor Justin F. Gabrie, who is also Managing Editor of Marvel Publishing. “Our focus from day one was to go back to basics and create some really strong stories in the classic What If? manner, pinpointing on that one infinitesimal moment in time that can change everything for the characters we love in the Marvel U. On top of that, we went through great pains, especially with the cover designs, to make them feel like they were an extension or a part of the original event it was based on. Speaking for the creative teams involved -- David Hine, Mico Suayan, Raphael Kayanan and Paul Mounts for Annihilation; Chris Yost, Larry Stroman, Jon Sibal and Christina Strain for X-Men-- you always hope that a project you work hard on gains the positive response you hope for. This, to us, confirms we did our job right and then some.”

Coming soon, Marvel explores the consequences of a very different confrontation between Iron Man and Captain America in What If? Civil War, an extra-sized issue featuring two stories guaranteed to cure your Civil War withdrawals! Then, in What If? Spider-Man VS. Wolverine, Spider-Man becomes a killer…and Wolverine aims to make him pay for his transgressions!

Please note that Marvel currently has no plans to go back to press on What If? X-Men: The Rise and Fall Of The Shi’Ar Empire and What If? Annihilation.
