Childhood:

      
      Born in the mining town of Fort McMurray, Alberta the son of Norbert Black and Anna Black, a miner and a teacher, Felix was well off for his first few years of life. As a child, he displayed early signs of his genius intellect when he built a mechanical dog out of a television remote, a phone, and three sticks of chewing gum. Then disaster struck his family when his father was crushed by a hauler truck when his pickup stalled. Soon after, Mrs. Black suffered a nervous breakdown and child services deemed her unfit to parent. For the next five years of his life, Felix was bumped along from orphanage to foster home to the street. His Uncle Franklin, who had initially decided against taking him in, but had always been interested in the boys intellect, stepped forward and agreed to take him in. Frank had an ulterior motive behind this, though, as he wanted to research the boy. For another twelve years, Felix suffered through his Unlce's experiments, some of which altering his DNA and crossing it with other species, along with being completely cut off from the outside world the whole time. When he turned eleven, he began reading comic books and playing video games in his spair time, using them to escape the pain that was his life. On his fifteenth birthday, Felix completed a radio that he had been building from scrap material that he had been collecting for the past few weeks. Finally contacting the world outside of Uncle Frank's house, he stared communicating with the daughter of FBI agent Duncan Markez. When the girl, Rebecca, learned of his plight, she showed the transmissions to her father, who passed them on to his superiors. Soon, he would lead a team in to bust Frank, who turned out to be an international criminal who had been evading capture for years. Before being taken away, Frank swore he would get his revenge on Felix.

A real family:

      After this, Agent Markez took Felix in. While living with his new family, Felix began to look to Duncan as a father, and he quickly fell in love with Rebecca. On his sixteenth birthday, Professor Jonothon McCloud, a high ranking government agent, drafted Felix into service on a think tank that took the best and the brightest of the country and gave them the chance to change the world. Deciding he wanted to work on an idea that he had been tinkering with for a while, Felix agreed, on the condition that he could visit the Markez's regularly. His idea was for a revolutionary new metal that would would be able to heal itself if it was damaged, adapt to certain situations and alter its shape, and was as strong as titanium and as light as aluminum. He worked in a lab with several other scientists, including one who was trying to make and indestrucible policeman, and his best friend and biggest rival, Jeremy Grady, who was working on using sound waves for military purposes. One year later, a panel of government officials came to the think tank to view the projects. Then they would decide on the ten that they thought would be most beneficial and they would provide unlimited funding to it, basically giving the scientist security for life. While both Jeremy and Felix impressed the officials, the inventor of the indestrucible soldier, Jeffrey O'Donnel, sent them into fits of laughter. Feeling cheated of his prize, O'Donnel believed that Felix, now only seventeen, didn't deserve the position he had recieved. In a fit of jealous rage, he hired someone to destroy every trace of Felix's work, and then to end his life. After being given access to the building that the labs were in, the hired thug broke into Felix's lab, not realizing that he was still there experimenting with his metal on a houseplant. In his surprise, the thug stumbled back and fell into an experimental compact gravitational bomb, activating. Within ten seconds everything in a 5 km radius had been reduced to rubble. However, as the explosion was about to occur, the energy released from the bomb shattered the containment unit that held the metal, flooding Felix with it. The energy released by the blast annihilated the metal's A.I. In it's last moments of intelligence, it knew that it would need to bond with its creator, increasing both of their chances for surviving, and passing on the control it once held over its shape to Felix. The moment it came in contact with his blood stream, the liquid bonded to him on an atomic level, saving his life, but at the same time destroying it. 

Rebirth:

      After the explosion, Felix awoke in a daze, surrounded by rubble and fire. He quickly realized that he should have been dead, and soon after was horrified to find out why. His entire body was now metallic. The shock at this initial discovery soon changed to a terrified w onder as he examined his arm in the light of a nearby fire. It seemed to flow like water, but was solid to the touch. After dragging himself to his feet, he quickly collapsed again when he remembered what had happened to the lab. As he wepted at the thought of the people who had died so suddenly and so violently, a search party looking for any survivors spotted him, and based on his appearence, they assumed he was hostile and began to fire on him. To the shock of everyone, there bullets richoceted off of his body, some of them hitting the members of the team. Hearing their shouts of pain and rage, he recieved a quick boost of adrenaline, enough for him to get to his feet and limp/sprint away from the soldiers. The boost was short lived, and he began to panic as he heard the sound of his infuriated pursuers closing in on him. Seeing a crack that lead to what used to be a sewer pipe, Felix played a hunch and tried to force himself through it. To both his and the soldiers amazement, his metallic body slowly seeped through and into the water. In spite of the pain it caused him, he forced his entire body through the thin crack, letting out a shreik of pain with his final effort. his limp body fell into the cold water bellow, the rushing current carrying him away from the gunshots and hateful voices that still attemped to kill him. As he slipped from conciousness, his last thought was a desperate wish that it had all been a dream, and that he would wake up in the Markez's house, lying next to Rebecca, the woman he loved more than life itself, and protected by Duncan Markez, the only father he had ever known.

     After several days of fevered nightmares, Felix awoke, lying on the murky bank of some lake. He gasped and sat up with a snap as he remembered what he hoped was just a nightmare. As he realized that this nightmare was a waking one, he broke down in t ears. He knew that his life as a human being was over, that he could only ever hope to be a sideshow freak or a lab rat. He wanted more than anything to go to Redecca, knowing she would still love him. But then the reality of his situation struck him, and he knew if he went near her he would ruin her life too. So he lay there in the mud and the muck, having lost all faith in life, all he dared hoped for was for death to come. Minutes stretched into hours, and hours into days, but not matter how tired or hungry he was, he wouldn't die. Then, as he had began contemplaiting drowning himself, a thought struck him. This was no normal thought, though, but a memory of his childhood, of being raised by his uncle. It was of the comic books he used to read as a child, and the super heroes who would use there abilities to save the world, no matter what the cost to themselves. "Thats enough self-pity for now.. My life may be over, but that doesn't mean it has to happen to anyone else." He spoke this outloud, as a promise to protect the innocent and the world from those who would harm them. With that, he rose to his feet and strode away from those foul bloody waters that had washed away both the life he had once known, and the life-blood of so many victims of human greed.

      Before he began traveling toward civilization, Felix tried to learn more about his new abilities. After a short period of time, Felix decided he must have survived the explosion because his new metal had bonded to his body and saved him from the explosion. His metal body rode the line between liquid and metal, giving him enhanced physical abilities, while letting him alter his body to a small extent. He also learned, after failing miserably at hunting, that it gave him greater stamina and let him go without food for a greater period of time than the average human. After spending several months in solitude, learning more control over his abilities, Felix began traveling to the nearest city. He had learned enough control to make himself appear human again, but he still wasn't comfortable around people, not wanting to involve anyone with him in any way possible, for fear that they get dragged into the insanity that was all he knew now. After a little hitch-hi king and a lot of walking, Felix made it to the city of Vancouver. "Well, lets get started then, shall we?"

New Resolve:

      And with that, his career as a hero began. Things were never easy for him. The government-owned group that had been behind the think tank, Saga Unlimited, was constantly hounding him, trying to track him down and bring him in, while smearing him in the press as a terrorist, causing some damage to his reputation. In spite of this, he still did everything he could to help people, no matter how much he was feared by them. After Saga Unltd. started a conspiracy to capture Felix, he learned that this was just a front company for a terrorist group known as Siege. He also learned that they were trying to capture him to disect him so that they could replicate his abilities and make a squadron of super-agents, assassin's that could infiltrate any group and that were completely controllable through the nanobots. When he learned this, he knew he had to stop them at any cost. He infiltrated their main British Columbia headquarters in the Rocky Mountain range with the intention of blowing it up, to at least slow down their plans. His plan was to break into the computer room, which was at the highest point of the base, download and delete all their files, and activate the self destruct sequence.

The seige on Seige:

      After several close calls, he finally made it into their computer room, where he started hacking into their mainframe. He downloaded all of their files onto a personal computer that he had built, then he deleted them from their system. Until, he came across the ones related to him. Even though he had precious little time before the computer discovered his pressence, he had to know what they knew about him. "Oh my god." he whispered. "They've been manipulating me through my entire life!"  According to the file, Seige was responsible for his father being crushed, and for him being taken from his mother, who they then killed, and for his being placed with his uncle. It turned out that he wasn't even related to Frank, who had worked at "Saga unltd" for years leading up to his criminal career, during which he was working for Seige. He also found out what "Uncle Frank" had done to him. He had crossed his DNA with several creatures, some of which that were registered as "extraterrestrial." "I'm not... human." He said in utter disbelief. Just then, the Alarm sounded, snapping him out of his catatonic state. "WARNING, WARNING, DATABASE BEING HACKED! ALL AVAILABLE SOLDIERS REPORT TO WAR ROOM!" He heard voices shouting and the foot steps of thousands of troops coming at him through the main hallway. He hurled a needle at the door switch, causing it to slam shut. "That won't stop them for long. I gotta work fast!" He turned back to the comptuter, typing frantically as the voices reached the other side of the door. As he finished downloading and deleting the last of the files, he began hacking into the main control system to activate the selfdestruct sequence. He heard a beeping coming from the other side of the door. "Oh, crap! They set the explosives!" He turned back to the massive computer screen and finished inputing the last number in the forty-five digit passcode, he set the self destruct to go off in sixty seconds. A massive explosion came from behind him and soldiers poured into the room and aimed their weapons at him, He turned and gazed around the room, looking at each of the men that were poised to end his life. "Professor Felix Black!" The ranking officer yelled from the middle of the group. "Stand down and prepare to be taken into custody, or we will open fire!" He slowly picked up his laptop and placed it in his bag. "Felix Black?" He said, his voice dripping with rage. "Felix Black died in the Explosion. My name is IRON LIFE!" As he shouted out the last two words he threw is arms open, sending a barrage of needles into the surrounding troops. He dashed forward, morphing his arm into a blade and leaping through the air, he used his other arm to flip over the commander, using his momentum to throw the unfortunate man through the clustered soldiers and into a support beam. He began cutting a swathe through the troops, sending highly trained killers flying in all directions. "CLEAR!" He whipped around to see a soldier standing in the gapping hole that used to be a door. This one was down on one knee and carrying an enormous gun. Before he could react, a bolt of lightning flew from the muzzle directly into him. The blast contained enough energy to destroy a building, and he stood there, only slightly shaken by the bolt. "I... I absorbed it! I wonder, does that mean-"

      "SELF DESTRUCT IN FIFTEEN SECONDS!" The computer boomed over the loudspeaker. "Only one chance to find out!" he muttered to himself. He dashed through the remaining soldiers, knocking them aside, he ran as fast as he could directly at the wall. "SEVEN... SIX... FIVE... FOUR... THREE..." He leapt head on at the wall, releasing the energy he had absorded on contact with it. The electricity coursed through it causing it to shatter and sending him flying out in open the air, thousands of miles above the ground. "TWO... ONE... SELF DESTRUCT INITIATED! GOOD BYE!" The explosion went off, rocking the very mountains the base was built on and sending Iron Life spinning through the air. As he dropped to the earth bellow, barely concious, images of his friends flitted through his mind. "Duncan... Jeremy... Rebecca..." His eyes snapped open and he saw the ground rushing up to meet him. "Oh crap!" Suddenly, an idea struck him. He straightened up his descent, tucking in his arms and pointing his legs. His speed increased, his body rushing toward the ground. "Just... gotta... FOCUS!" At the last possible moment, a set of shining metal wings shot forth from his back. As the wind filled them, he soared into the air, rising higher and higher until the sun gleamed off of his body, so that for anyone watching, they would have thought they were looking at an angel. "Well how about that. It actually worked. Maybe I'm not so bad at this hero thing after all."

Even as a young child, Felix displayed a gifted mind. Despite his young age, he is considered by many to be one of the world's experts on Biology, Mutation, Metallurgy, and Robotics . He is also a skilled code writer and hacker, and a talented inventor.

Shape Shifting:

When the New Metal bonded to his genetic structure, it gave to Felix it's abitilty to adapt to survive. Although it changed his body to a metallic version of its former self, with the use of this ability he can make himself look the way we did before the accident. Also, he can alter his appearence to a small extent, allowing him to look like another person of roughly the same height as he is in his true form. In addition to changing his appearence, He can now create weapons out of his body, from something as simple as making his fist larger to as complex as making a crossbow on his forearm. This ability also allows him to adapt to different environments to survive, and lets him alter his body for a variety of effects (i.e. creating wings to fly with). However, more complex morphs require more mental stamina

Conductivity:

Due to a side effect of the metal bonding to his body, Felix has gained a minor amount of concious control over his electrons, allowing him to absorb, store, and rechannel electrical energy at will.

Durability:

Thanks to his altered biology, Felix's body is as durable as the metal that bonded with it. He can easily take bullets from firearms at point blank range, though his durablitly does not make him immune to pain. His body can take bullets from small and most medium firearms. Weapons made of the rare metal "ultimatium" can also pierce his armored body.

*His enhanced physical attributes are also an effect of the multiple DNA strands that were mixed with his biology during his childhood.

Strength:

His new body can now take a greater amount of stress and pressure, allowing him to lift/press a maximum of five tons under optimal conditions.

Speed:

The enhancements to his muscles allow Felix to run up to seventy kilometers per hour for long distances under optimal conditions, and almost double that for short sprints.

Agiltiy:

He now possesses highly enhanced acrobatic skills,  greater than that of an olympic gold medalist. He also has superhuman relfexes.

Stamina:

Felix is able to perform most  physical and mental tasks for over twenty-four hours under optimal conditions before the affects of fatigue begin to set in.

Endurance:

The New Metal allows him to go for a greater amount of time without food or water by pulling nutrients out of the air. Despite this, Felix still must eat, drink, and sleep periodically to remain healthy.

Healing:

One of the New Metals basic features was the ability to heal itself of any damage inflicted upon it. this ability was passed on to Felix, though it is not quite as powerful now. The rate of healing also varies depending on the size and severity of the inflicted wound, but he generally heals from injuries in under a day for severe wounds and less than hours for more minor injuries wounds. This healing factor gives him virtually total immunity to diease.

Beside this, he has mostly been viewed as a B-list hero, even during his partnership with Luke Cage. This book changed ALL of that. It put him on the comicbook reader's map! He went from Second Stringer, to crazy Kung-Fu Billionaire warrior, flying through the air in crazy poses and fighting legion upon legion of bad guys while jumping across the roof tops of New York. 2 Comments Leave a Comment
