  • So like he eats people's faces?... AWESOME!: Grant Morrison is a sick bastard. He manages to create villains so messed up that's the books they appear in are hard to read. His Batman and Robin arch has been full of that. He's spawn nightmares such as Professor Pyg, Scarlet, and Flamingo (I mean they're in Batman #66 but hey cut me some slack). If not in the conclusion of Blackest Night then I think the end of Blackest Night will set in motion his come back.

  • @Andrej_L: If what you're saying is that you're going to finish 46 issues and then shop it around I wouldn't recommend it. Personally I would never read the spin-off stuff but that doesn't mean you can get it published. It'll take a pretty big following I assume to get that printed and you might end up only doing a few issues as opposed to the amount that you're talking but ...

  • @Andrej_L: I'm not entirely sure of your question: How many would I finish before I started submitting? One, I think as soon as you have something produced you should start showing it off. It might take a number of issues from them to take you seriously but the sooner you're on their radar the better.  How many would I say I'm planning on writing for an interested publisher? • I mean it's been done. Dave Sim wrote and drew 300 issue of Cerebus but it took him 27 years and Jeff Smith did 100 issues of Bone in 13 years. Sims self published and for the most part so did Smith. I really think a series of that magnitude (I say stick with the 240) would require self publishing.  Again, if you intend this to be your first published ...

  • I think if you're willing to stick with your issue amount you should just self-publish it. That'll give you something to show to comic companies. Who knows maybe they'll republish the ones you've put out already. Admittedly 240 issues is a lot, writing and drawing that might actually take forever. If you're up to the challenge good on you.

I was going to make this post on a thread but I figured it'd just get buried and I'd be reposting it for the rest of the year. I'm going to cut out the middle man and just make it a blog post.

Check this out:
- Zombies are played out. Stop making zombie movies for awhile. Zombieland is a great bookend. D-O-N-E.
- Twilight made people think vampires are lame. Don't believe the hype. Lesbian Vampire Killers is one of the best movies this year.
- Twilight is also going to make people think werewolves are lame. Don't believe the hype. Werewolves have a lot of untapped potential (i.e. Ginger Snaps 1-3).

I think the biggest part of picking a comic to follow for the rest of my life would be that a) it will continue past my death and b) it stays good. The Batman title does both of these. Since it's a major DC title it consistently gets good writers and artists and I don't see them canceling the Batman title anytime soon.

I'm glad I read this one because it takes all the played out conventions of Blackest Night stories and ignores them ie. the dead rise and create havoc for loved ones, OMG AWESOME this will surely never get old. Well it did and that's why this issue is awesome. No Hal Jordan. Check this out: No Hal Jordan. And beyond that we get a confrontation between Sinestro and Carol Ferris. It's not one of those Blackest Night confrontations with the whole "I know stuff about you because I straight downloaded 'em" it's real characters dealing with defining issues.
Do the dead rise in this issue?
But it's used more to ramp things up than to show that "Hey the dead are rising. Crazy guys, crazy." I'm going to catch up on more Green Lantern and Corps so don't be surprised if I post more reviews.

And remember "I'll never be a good girl". Thanks Carol.

He's spawn nightmares such as Professor Pyg, Scarlet, and Flamingo (I mean they're in Batman #66 but hey cut me some slack). I feel this title does the best job at really setting Batman on a positive trajectory. But on to the issue at hand:

I think Philip Tan is an amazing talent but when I compare anyone to Fran Quitely they're going to come up short. That isn't to say the art isn't good, it's just not as good. The story for this particular issue isn't the greatest so far but it closes some story threads and shows more of what's to come. Batman and Robin's (or should I say Robin and Batman's) relationship is one of the best things about this issue. I was a big critic of the Dick Grayson/Damian Wayne team up but I'm really coming around. Morrison demonstrates that Dick is starting to doubt Bruce's techniques when he confronts a villain that was designed to be his replacement and Damian is learning that he might not in fact know everything and sometimes his actions have consequences. I've also been a big critic of Jason Todd's return as well but you really start to feel sorry for him despite his extreme methods.

A great issue but not for the faint of heart.

I'm not sure why they ended the Catwoman series. I don't think they canceled it due to lack of sales because Will Pfeifer writes Catwoman better than anyone, David Lopez's art supplies the appropriate drama, and they had Adam Freaking Hughes doing covers. It seems like they would have ended it going into Batman R.I.P. which makes sense due to her appearance in the Hush storyline. My time line might be way off though. Regardless, this issue end the series with class which isn't something a lot of my favorite ended titles can say. In Catwoman #82 we follow Batman perusing Catwoman through the East end of Gotham. The chase itself is great showing of some of Gotham's set pieces but the what really makes this story great is what happens after the chase.
I reread this issue when I need to be reminded of that. This issue leaves things on a high note.

By all means I should hate Superman: Secret Origin #2. I don't like Smallville so the whole "Lex and Clark knew each other as kids!" thing really grinds me gears (even though Lex is totally different in this comic), I think the Legion is dumb, and I once told somebody that if I had to listen to the origin of Superman or Batman one more time I'd never stop puking. I did not puke once during the reading of this issue. Despite all the predicted faults I'm a huge Geoff Johns fan (who isn't) and I think Gary Frank is pretty amazing. Geoff Johns gets even more of my respect because he serves me something that by all means I should not enjoy and I end up liking it.
The dialog is great, the characterization while isn't most original works well, and every panel of the issue is eye-catching. I'm not going to talk about the story because you already know it but people should pick up this series for the details. The writer's and artist's love for the character seep through the pages.

Batman Gothic scared the hell out of me when I was 14 (I didn't read it when it came out). Batman Gothic still scares the hell out of me. Grant Morrison claims to be reading a lot of gothic literature at the time of writing this story so he wanted to bring Batman back to his gothic origins. He also must have been reading a book about how to make me s**t my pants.
Morrison does a great job at showing how damaged Bruce Wayne is, a technique he uses to great effect in Batman R.I.P. almost 18 years later. In fact Batman Gothic is a pretty interesting preview of what Morrison will later do with the character.
Mr. Whisper is the thing nightmares are made of. I think it's great that no other writer tried to reintroduce him after this book because that would be insanity. He is by far the most evil in Batman's rogue gallery with a origin story that is haunting.
I'm not going to talk to much about the plot because I'll let you find out for yourself (the art is pretty standard for the time). Just know that every issue in this collection is all killer, no filler. Read with the lights on.

Friday the 13th Part 2 was rushed into production. After the first film in the series proved viable filming began for the sequel. Debuting less than a year after the first film Friday the 13th Part 2 refines the formula that we'll see play out over and over throughout the series (mainly by making Jason the killer).
I've always thought the main female characters in Friday movies are well done and Ginny is a great example (others being Alice, Tina, and Rowan). I think she's pretty smart character who gets in WAY over her head and then manages to get her way out of trouble through using her head a lot of luck. She is also important to take note of because she seems to be the inspiration for a character in Friday the 13th (2009).
As a movie Friday the 13th Part 2 is dud. It's a great reason that slasher movies got branded "Dead Teenager Films". Cliche
counselor are disposed of and you won't care. That being said, Friday the 13th is a great Friday the 13 movie because it genuinely wants to be more than the first movie and I hold a special place for it on my shelf.

Jennifer's Body is a good movie. I must admit I don't have an overwhelming hate of Megan Fox like most of the internet does so maybe I'm biased in the wrong way but that doesn't change the fact the Jennifer's Body is a good movie. The concept itself is great. Having the cliche popular high school girl possessed leads to a really interesting story. It's full of dialog, penned by Diablo Cody of Juno fame, which I took to be stupid on purpose but others have disagreed. Amanda Seyfried does a great job playing Needy, Jennifer's friend who tries her best to stop the demon and Adam Brody is hilarious as the a$$hole singer of Low Shoulder. I think a lot of people missed this movie and that's really too bad. A fun film.

I've been reading the Archie Marries Veronica art since it started two issues ago and despite giving you what it promises on the cover of each issue the writing is godawful. It feels like it's being plotted out by an eight year-old girl (which makes the weird Citizen Kane reference even more out of left field). This story seems like fan fiction without any of the dirty parts.
This issue is probably the worst offender of the issues so far. The first two at least gave a glimpse of what the other Archie characters were dealing with, this issue basically gives up and just focuses on Archie and Veronica. Jughead's and Betty's stories are pushed aside to better focus on a clique look at pregnancy.

I'm going to read the next three issues after this one two. Don't expect as favorable a review as this issue got for the future crime against comic books that Archie comics calls issues 603-605. DO NOT READ.

Similar to Blackest Night: Batman, Blackest Night: Superman is a bit of a let down after starting out strong. I would have rather have seen less of this story line shown in Blackest Night proper instead of having it's own mini. That would make DC less money though so fair enough. Going forward these two minis will weigh heavily on my mind when I ponder picking up more of the Blackest Night: [Insert Hero Here] minis, guess what there are more on the way folks.

On the topic of the actual book, Blackest Night: Superman looks beautiful and the dialog is great. The characters develop in interesting ways and the action beats are handled well. The only complaint is the ending but you can read my Blackest Night: Batman #3 review for more details on how to kill my interest in a spin-off mini-series.

This in the final issue of the Blackest Night: Batman mini and I've got to say I'm a little disappointed. The first two issues were amazing and I suppose the last one wasn't bad either but I thought we would better getting more of a resolution than we got. I didn't expect Tim and Dick to figure out how to kill Black Lanterns but still I wanted more.
That aside though, this comic book is CREEPY. It does a great job of showing how damaged Dick and Tim are. There is some seriously messed up stuff going on here and I felt uncomfortable throughout which in this case is a good thing.
I might have liked Blackest Night: Batman if it were more issues or was placed later in The Blackest Night arch (because they would most likely resolve more) but considering the mini series we got I can't complain too much. This mini might have been more for people not following another Blackest Night comic.
