A hell on earth kind of ordeal, It would have been major news.

My Super Life

The Early Years

Slinger, born James Burgess Jr, is an unassuming man, very thin, five and a half feet tall, with brown shaggy hair, and icy blue eyes. Sometimes he sports a short, scruffy, red beard and mustache. Slinger is most often seen wearing tight fitting jeans and a slim cut band t-shirt. His father, James Burgess Sr, is a wealthy software developer and his mother, Noreen Flynn-Burgess is an anthropologist.

When James was a young boy, his parents were both often extremely busy with their careers, often leaving the young boy to stay with his grandfather, John Flynn. He loved his grandpa very much and would often sit in wonder as he would tell him stories about crusading knights back in the middle ages, especially the Knights Templar. James quickly took great interest in the knighthood, he would play at being a knight all the time, practicing chivalry, righting small wrongs around the neighborhood, and constantly studying different knightly orders.

One day while his parents were out of town on business, and his grandpa was taking a nap, young James, 13 years old at the time, went on a treasure hunting mission in his grandfathers basement. Hanging on the wall in the basement was a placard that had a picture of his families coat of arms, that James had never noticed before. He studied it carefully, memorizing the design, a large dog under three moons. He reached up to pull it down and heard a loud bang and a click, then the sound of stone grinding against stone, as the wall started to shift revealing a passage. The idea of a secret passage in his grandfather's basement was just too much excitement for James to pass up, and he decided to explore. He made his way through the dark twisting stone corridor, and finally came into a large chamber deep underground. Ensconced torches lined the room, and there was one small oil lamp, still lit sitting at the center of a large, round, stone table. Surrounding the table were eight small chairs, and another more extravagant looking one. Also around the circular room he saw that there were eight other passages leading out of the chamber. Just as he was preparing to explore further he was frightened by the sound of a familiar voice, "Well, James, it seems you have stumbled upon my little secret." It was Grandpa Flynn! "Welcome my boy, to the inner sanctum of the order of the Knights Templar."

Young James' life was transformed forever the day he had stumbled upon the secret meeting place of the knights. Though it took some persuasion on his part, he managed to convince his grandfather and the rest of the order to induct him into the knighthood. They decided that since he already knew about their secret, it was in their best interest, as well as James' to make him a squire under his grandfather. The next ten years, James spent his life studying the Templar code, underwent intense physical training, and began down the path to spiritual purity. It was very hard work, but James was happy and honored to do it.

Just as he was entering his eleventh year as squire to his grandfather, tragedy struck. The Charter of the knighthood, as well as a sacred artifact was stolen by an unknown assailant, but even worse still, James' grandpa was direly injured during the theft, leaving James' alone for a time, a squire without a knight with whom train. Instead of appointing a new knight for James to train under, the aging council decided that he had learned what he could from the knights, and instead granted James the title of Knight-Errant and tasked him with the job of seeking out the thief and retrieving the charter and the artifact that was stolen, and when the time comes that he return triumphant, he will take his grandpa's place among the Order.

Eager to become a full fledged knight, Slinger came to the Comic Vine, but when he got there he was quickly intimidated by the powerful others already inhabiting it. Nonetheless Slinger has a heart of gold, he is quick to defend those who are in need, and tries his best to right wrongs when he can. His journey will not end until he can find the thief who stole from the Templars, and then, bring it to justice.

The Code

  • Before all else a Templar knight is faithful.

  • A Templar's valor is a measure of his faith.

  • Humility in all things.

  • Patience outlasts all.

  • Loyalty to true friends, vengeance to betrayers and foes.

  • Benevolence is a balm to all souls.

  • Integrity is the foundation on which all things of value are built.

  • Mercy for those that deserve mercy.

  • Generosity is the left hand of God.

The First Encounter
Not long after he had decided to take up arms with the evil of the world, Slinger had discovered he had a powerful enemy in the Hellfire Club. The leader of the Hellfire Club, through a series of carefully planned actions had risen to become the president of the United States and had declared a large number of heroes, including Slinger, fugitives from the law. Anxious to clear his name and figure out why he had been targetted in this way young James made his way to Washington, but he would never make it.

During the trip while traveling through New York, there was a disaster involving a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier. Slinger was the first hero on the scene and did his best to rescue who he could, but was interrupted by an attack from S.H.I.E.L.D. "cape-killer" units and after a brutal fight was captured and brought into a super max prison facility on a nearby island.

After a failed attempt by the president to sway Slinger to his side, Slinger was freed from the prison by the hero Last Arrow. Slinger took the opportunity to hijack a military helicopter and flew back to New York where an intense battle had raged. He managed to briefly capture the president and question him, but the resourceful villain managed an escape that left the chopper to plummet. Slinger managed to rescue the helicopter crew and himself, but the experience had enlightened Slinger and changed him for good.

Powers and Abilities

Armor

Slinger owns many different suits of armor that are designed for various different situations. Most often he wears a thin black suit of flexible armor made of a special vibranium weave that renders the armor nearly indestructible, though because it is so thin it does not protect against certain blunt force impact. The flexibility of the armor makes it very useful in covert operations as it doesn't make any noise. In more pitched battles, where stealth is secondary to protection, Slinger uses a stronger, more reinforced suit of rigid armor made from a shining white ultralight alloy that is also nearly indestructible and is said to be under divine protection. This second suit much more closely resembles the classic knights armor, with far fewer weak points than his flexible suit. The light weight of the metal allows for increased mobility. With either suit, he may or may not wear a helmet.

Sword

Slinger also owns a thousand year old bastard sword, said to have been crafted in heaven by the archangels for use against the legions of Hell. The Holy blade always shines as if it is being bathed in direct sunlight. The edge is incredibly sharp, and completly indestructible. It has no need for sharpening, and can cut through nearlly anything. The divine properties of the blade offer some protections to the wielder when drawn, most notably a high resistance to magic, and many other attacks using "negative energy" or "shadow" based attacks.

Other Weapons

Recently Slinger has been seen using two pistols of unknown make. He most often loads them with non-lethal ammunition.

Physical Traits

Slinger possesses nearly peak human speed agility and strength, as well as peak human endurance. He is trained in an ancient combat style handed down through the ages within the order of the Knights Templar, known by no other. It is said rumored that the combat style is only possible because of the Templar's close relationship with the Holy Spirit. The style focuses on defense and riposte, rather than aggressive assault. Legends tell of knights past who have mastered the style standing firm against hordes of enemy soldiers usually being the last one to draw breath. Slinger has become the Order's foremost practitioner of the art, though he uses a more adaptive, versatile, form of the technique.

Other Powers

Recently Slinger has developed a power that he has kept hidden from the rest of the world. He has been able to on occasion tap into his own spirit and channel it into positive energy. He can use this energy to heal himself and others, or he can use it to charge his attacks with brilliant luminous power that is harmless to the good and just, but has devastating affect on those who embrace evil and the path of darkness. Used in conjunction with his Holy sword, it is truly a force to be reckoned with.

Wow, in just a few months (maybe less, I wasn't really paying attention) this place (Comic Vine) has really changed (or maybe I have?) It seems like I can't log on anymore without being completely overwhelmed by the hordes of (what I assume are) kids clogging up the boards with illegible posts that look (to me) like the leftover shrapnel from a typewriter explosion. It's strange, and by no means am I one of the ancient and celebrated early Viners (I've only been here for less than half of a year,) but I can remember back when I could post in a certain thread and have actual adult conversation (admittedly, young adult). Now most of the time I just don't get it. Have I outgrown Comic Vine? I hate to say it, but I think the answer may be yes. Now, I'm not going to put myself out there and say, "I'm leaving unless you beg!" Like so many others have (and haven't left,) but I believe that I can safely say I wont be around quite as much any more as I steadily lose interest (which doesn't really say much).

I guess what I'm saying is, "Dear Comic Vine, It's not me, it's you. I'll keep in touch."

I really HATE manga! This may not win me any friends but if I was responsible for phrasing the question it would have read: Do you read manga? Yes? What the hell is wrong with you?!

This post relates to: Who is your favorite comic Publisher and why?

I certainly read more from Marvel than anything else, I stay away from DC, though I am reading the RIP books, not loving most of them, but I like the Hush story in Detective Comics. I love DDP and IDW, but I never read them and I don't know why. Also Slave Labor has always been a favorite of mine, gotta love JTHM and Squee.
