Methos

Methos Passion... it lies in all of us. Sleeping, waiting, and though unwanted, unbidden, it will stir, open its jaws, and howl. It speaks to us, guides us... passion rules us all. And we obey. What other choice do we have?

"Passion is the source of our finest moments; the joy of love, the clarity of hatred, and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion, maybe we'd know some kind of peace. But we would be hollow. Empty rooms, shuttered and dank... without passion, we'd be truly dead. "

My Super Life
Methos

Methos was born December 29th, 1979 in Sittingbourne, Kent. Methos was a child prodigy, learning to read at two and do calculus in his head at five. By the time he was 10 he could beat a computer at chess. In his teen years, Methos' family was dealt a hard blow when Methos' elder brother, Tom, was killed in Vietnam. Methos graduated high school at 16, and following his brother's advice, attended the London Institute of Technology.

While at LIT, Methos and his mentor, Professor LoNigro, developed a string theory on time travel. Methos went through four years of LIT in two years and continued through various colleges to eventually obtain seven doctoral degrees: Music, Medicine, Physics, Archeology, Ancient Languages, Chemistry and Astronomy. During his college years, Methos' father suffered a fatal heart attack. The guilt of his absence during his family's time of need would stay with Methos for years.

As a young adult, Methos was a key member of the Hellfire Project. It was on the Hellfire Project where he would meet some of his closest and most trusted friends: Gambler; a brilliant computer programmer known simply as Walkingstone; and Dr. Kara Cathain, the love of Methos's life. In the years after the Starbright Project, Methos and Kara were engaged, but Methos was jilted at the altar and never saw Kara again.

A few years later, Methos and Gambler spearheaded Project Quantum Wave, a time-travel experiment based on the string theory Methos had developed while at LIT. The PQW facility was located in Stallion's Gate, New Mexico in a primarily underground complex. In 2007, after constructing the necessary machinery, including a holographic imaging chamber and a supercomputer with access to vast historical databases, the project's funds were running thin. Eager to prove his theories, Methos stepped into the Quantum accelerator chamber and bombarded himself with agitated Quantum Radiation to prove his theories on Quantum Shift Mutation.

Methos' home at the end of the universe...

The Time Traveler
Methos, prior to project Quantum Wave

Methos awoke in 1956 having exchanged places in time with an Air Force test pilot. Having exchanged places with another person, everyone sees Methos as the person he displaced. As Methos would soon discover, quantum leaping had an unforeseen side-effect. He was struck with partial amnesia, describing his own situation with the analogy of his brain being like a hunk of Swiss cheese: full of holes.

After living out several years in the 50’s, Methos finally learned to control his “Quantum Shifting” to a reasonable level and can now travel in and out of the timeline, and to different dimensions at will. He does not need to ‘bounce’ someone out of the timeline anymore and due to his exposure to the agitated quantum radiation, his skin has now taken on a golden hue with his hair and eyes permanently crackling with ‘Time Flux’ from the amount of time he spends outside of the timeline and in the spaces between dimensions.

Having been travelling in and out of the time stream for many years now, Methos has picked up an unusual array of weapons including a jacket from fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. He's got a snakeskin sword from Korea that he had to kill someone for, his boots are from Italy circa 1640 and he's got gun holsters from the American West.

He is now working for The Torchwood team in their technology department, aiming to arm the human race against the future...

Methos

Methos' String Theory

Methos' theory of time travel, developed with Professor LoNigro, is based on an expanding, but finite universe. A person's life is like a length of string. One end represents birth, the other represents death. If one were to tie the ends of the string together, their life becomes a loop. Next, by balling the loop together, the days on one's life would touch one another out of sequence, this was the major breakthrough in project Quantum Wave, allowing his body to be bombarded by the Quantum Particles pushed him slightly out of phase with the rest of the universe, and once he had figured out how to control the quantum nature of his new body it allowed him temporal and dimensional travel abilities.

Changes in his own life

M-Theory

Though explicitly forbidden by his own guidelines to alter the past for his own benefit, Methos did alter his own history and those of his loved ones on a number of occasions:

  • Star-Crossed, Methos reunited his future fiancée, Kara, who was nineteen at the time, with her estranged father. As a result, Kara did not leave Methos at the altar and the couple were married. This union would bring Kara onto Project Quantum Wave and, through her father's military connections, assure government funding, thus replacing the Project's private funding oversight committee with a government oversight committee.
  • Methos travelled back and replaced himself as a teenager to win a basketball game his team originally lost. While there, he tried without success to save the lives of his father and brother. When Methos left, he found himself inadvertently in his brother's SEAL unit in Vietnam. While there, Methos saved his brother's life, but missed a chance to free a young Gambler and two other POWs from their Viet-Cong captors.
  • Methos fathered a child, Samantha Josephine "Sammy Jo" Fuller. Like her father, Sammy Jo was a prodigy with a photographic memory. She would grow up to join the staff of Project Quantum Wave.

Trivia
Outside of time and space...

  • Methos ‘replaced’ nine women to fix the original timeline: a glamorous secretary, a divorced mother of three, a beauty pageant contestant, a pregnant teenager, a rape victim, a singer in a girl group, a housewife during the women's movement, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, and an inmate in a women's prison.
  • Methos ‘replaced’ people in the military (or veterans) ten times.
  • Methos ‘replaced’ two non-humans: a chimpanzee and, apparently, a vampire.
  • Methos ‘replaced’ nine people in law enforcement (including a PI and a bounty hunter).
  • Methos ‘replaced’ people in jail or prison four times.
  • Methos ‘replaced’ children or teenagers six times.
  • Methos ‘replaced’ college students (including military cadets) six times.
  • Methos SSN is 563-86-9801 and his Department of Defense Umbra Clearance Code is 004-002-02-016.
  • The 1970s was not Methos' favourite decade; for instance, he dislikes disco (Disco Inferno) but he absolutely loves the 80’s and has admitted to reliving them twenty or thirty times.
  • Methos was unable to remember his marriage to Kara throughout his time travelling. He thus had several romances that Kara knew of and accepted as a consequence of the good he was doing. As well as fathering Sammy Jo with Abigail Fuller.

This post relates to: What's the first comic you remember buying?

oh man, this brings back memories...

i remember it well, strangely the very first comic i bought for myself was an issue of Hellblazer right back in 1988... bloody hell, where does the time go?

Hellblazer

before that i'd been reading Supergirl for quite a few years, having 'inherited' my parents collection, i went on to continue the trend and caught up with the character and carried on collecting Supergirl right up to the present day...

Supergirl

strangely i didn't actually start collecting Green Lantern until the next year in 1989, in which i bought a ton of old issues, i remember the first one i read was The Green Lantern Corps titled 'The final chapter in the saga of The Green Lantern Corps"

GLC

All of these comics i still buy to this day and actually love them as much now as i did then, well, maybe not the current Supergirl, but thats another story...

Wow! Staring with Hellblazer is one hell of a jump I couldn't do it wasen't until four years after reading comics that I got into horror and more mature comics, personally I always found Hellblazer and many of Alan Moore as more serious and adult oriented

This post relates to: Doctor Who, Whose powers would you want to have?

I know people will say "huh..." to this, but it's got to be The Doctor...
The most dangerous man in the universe?

he doesn't have any flash powers, he can't leap tall buildings in a single bound or crush a star with his strength... he doesn't have speed or heat vision or ungodly implants that would let him tear someone apart limb from limb...

and dispite not having any of that, he's possibly the most dangerous enemy you could ever face...

his main 'power' is his intelligence, which it somewhere past the 4 didget mark in IQ points, the entire knowledge of the universe, every planet, star... everything that is, was, could be and must never be... he sees it all...

now that it something that would be worth having...

for a close second it has to be Waverider with Jack Hawksmoor coming in on a close third...

This post relates to: Kilowog, Salakk, Sinestro, Arisia, Ion, What's been the most shocking moment in comics for you?

Lethal Force
While this little panel isn't so much a big moment, the reactions of each Lantern are great and it really sets the tone for the upcoming panels that show how they use this new found lethal force.

"Ring Status Report: Sinestro Corps Screwed"
Building on the previous moment, this shows the Lanterns tearing through the Sinestro Corps members now that lethal force has been enabled. I love the different personalities of each character shining through with their various means of killing, like the guns from the ex-soldier Lantern and so on.

Even Salakk got in on the lethal force action with this awesome incineration of the White Lobe member attempting to suicide bomb Kilowog.

Sodam Yat seems a little too happy about the switch to lethal force being enabled in this scene. I also liked how Arisia did not want to resort to killing people. Good to see not everyone took the lethal force enabling as a license to kill.
"Lethal Force Has Been Enabled - Feel Free To Go Crazy"

Definitely a shocking moment...

Jack Hawksmoor

On this i have to agree with Buckshot...
The Doctor

Suits make an amazing 'costume' and it adds an air of authority (no pun intended) to any character.

Today is a sad sad day, we all mourn the passing of Michael Turner today, such a brilliant artist and he was taken at such a young age...
A truly amazing artist taken well before his time

my thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends...

most of you all know that he was suffering from cancer and had been having problems for some time now. Turner’s fight with cancer was truly inspirational. He fought it with dignity and grace.

Those wishing to send their condolences to Michael Turner's family are encouraged to send them to:

The start of something new?

Overall I was quite impressed with this run of Supergirl, this new issue however didn't seem to live up to the beginning of her 'reign'.

The artwork was ok; to be honest I don't think it works well for Supergirl. Alé Garza is a good artist, don't get me wrong but I don't feel that his artworks works well for the story or for the characters involved in this plotline.

As for this new plotline involving 'Phantom Zoner's'... I’m not too sure what to think about it at the moment, on the one hand is has stopped the 'powerboy' nonsense that had been going on; I’m just not too sure where they are heading with this. They seem to be rewriting a part of the history of superman with Kara's parents, hoping to bring some more 'action' into the book. I think this could be better accomplished by bring the Supergirl character into the limelight a bit more.

Again, the one thing that I keep coming back to when I think about this issue is the artwork. Admittedly Michael Turner is a hard act to follow after his run on the introduction and the first few issues but Alé Garza's art is just lacking something for the character in my eyes. Supergirl in his artwork seems more childlike, a more innocent naive Kara. Now while I’m not against bringing this side of Supergirl out into the open, I don't think that it is right for the storyline at present with the end of the issue telling Kara that she must kill Superman.

Overall I’ll keep reading Supergirl, but out of this run I will rank this issue quite low down on the scale.

Just rereading the issue now I was left with more questions than answers... The phantom zone is supposed to be a dimension away from our own, where nothing can affect anything in this dimension. if this is true and that Jor-El created the 'Zone' to house criminals, I’m not too sure that he would have knowingly used it to house the Super criminals which Superman met later on in his life.

Another thing I did have a slight problem with, this is really minor but it niggled at my brain through the entire read. Superman's father was Jor-El, and so Superman, his son was named Kal-El. different 'first name', same surname. Now in this issue, Supergirl's father was named as Zor-El, Jor-El's brother. So why is Supergirl named as Kara Zor-El, following what I can of Kryptonion names shouldn't it just be Kara-El?

Anyway, that aside the plotline was reasonably well done. I still had a few niggling doubts about the story surrounding the Sunstones and 'ghosts' that came out of the phantom zone to possess people.

So, if you’re a diehard Supergirl fan like me pick it up if only for your collection. If you’re just looking to get into the books and the Supergirl mythology I recommend going back and starting at the beginning of this run. It’ll probably leave you with a better taste for the character than the last few issues have.

at first i was a bit aprehensive about the comic, the books are amazing and i didn't see how the comics would be able to live up to them.

putting that thought aside i stepped in...

first impressions of the artwork... ok, i try and play it cool but my jaw hit the floor... the artwork isn't subtle by any standard, but it's absolutely perfect for the story they are telling.

the script was taken pretty much word for word out of the first book (Currently they are on book 14 with more to come), it was just as funny/sad/scary as the book.

the characters are drawn pretty much as i imagined them, right down to Anita's penguin collection ;)

all in all this series kept me entertained for ages, if they keep making it (Please, please please...) i will defninitely keep reading it, at least up untill they do Obsidian Butterfly... after that it will kinda turn into Hentai lol

seriously though, if you haven't read the comic, even if you haven't read the books, pick up an issue, read it. i can pretty much promise you'll love it.

Finally, the start of something good...

ok... for the past few issues we have been treated to the storyline about the crystals in Kara Zor-El, and the fact that she is 'supposed' to kill Superman.

now everything has finally been tipped on it's head, but i'm getting ahead of myself.

this issue actually felt right for once, the artwork and script actually fit together, which is something that has been sadly lacking from the Supergirl series so far. is all i finally felt some 'hope' for the series at last.

The artwork done by Garza, Alquiza and Lanning actually really worked for the storyline, their renditions of Kara, Cassie and Robin actually felt right, though the rensition of Superman felt a little too 'Dark Knight Returns' for my taste, but again, it fit in with the story.

The Martian Manhunter is one of the others that has had a 'redesign' in this issue, i've never been the niggest fan of the character, but the look given to him here actually looked more 'alien' than before and gave a bit more mystery to the character.

overall i was left a little confused over the storyline again, the earths sun going red while the phantasms are coming through and Robin claiming over and over to be Batman's Son.

the end of the storyline is getting darker and darker, with Kara explaining to Kal that her only choice to save Earth is to kill him, and he accepts this. he accepts his death with the simple words...

"Do it... and please tell lois... we had no choice"

at this point we are shown yet another Supergirl... something the writers have had a penchant for for some time now...

now we're left with the questions who is this new supergirl? who is out supergirl?

the new supergirl looks more like the Kara Zor-El of old, and i for one am hoping that she will stay around... but another part of me is saying this will be the return of Linda Danvers...

so many question's and so few answers...

all in all a nice read and a fitting close to the storyline, i'm hoping this will be closed up soon so we can head on to brighter and better things for the Supergirl series, but if not i can hope and prey that this is Kara Zor-El returning at last to remove the pretender.

I can only say one thing about this issue... ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!

Tommy Monaghan makes a triumphant return in this issue, set before his untimely death at the end of Hitman it's a breath of fresh air for the DCU.

Firstly a warning, read the Hitman series first or most of the jokes will be lost on you, such as the previous Hitman / Green Lantern team up or the hilarious issue with Hitman throwing up on Batman... or the issue which should have won an award for the best portrayal of Superman where Hitman managed to convince Superman that he was doing the right thing, and there was still good in the world.

This issue was a nice change from the JLA at the moment, going back to when Kyle was still in his old uniform as Green Lantern. It's riddled with the usual humor normally found in Hitman with cameo's from all the regulars from Noonan's bar.

Overall, if you you're a fan of Hitman, or just looking for some hilarious reading at the JLA's expense pick up this book :D
