True to her name, the shapeshifting Mystique is an enigma. Is she a mutant terrorist determined to bring about the end of humanity, or a misguided mutant with a good heart? Edit

News

History

Very little is known about Mystique. What is known is that she is more than 100 years old, and was probably born somewhere in Austria. In one of her earliest appearances she tried to assassinate a U. S. Senator, Robert Kelly. If she had succeeded then the future events chronicled in the story Days of Future Past would eventually occur, and Sentinels would hunt down and kill all mutants under the auspices of the U.S. government.

Nightcrawler
Nightcrawler

Mystique is one of the few bisexual characters in comics, having had a long relationship with Irene Adler, Destiny. She also has three known children. She is the biological mother of both Nightcrawler and Graydon Creed, whose father was the mutant Sabretooth. Ironically, Graydon was a mutant-hating human and leader of the racist group, the Friends of Humanity. He was eventually assasinated by Mystique herself. Her third child, by adoption, was Rogue who would eventually join the X-Men after turning her back on the Mystique's Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants.

When Mystique was with Destiny they tried not to let Destiny's precognitive dreams come to past. They stayed with each other for decades until Destiny died. They meet a time traveling Shadowcat and Rachel. Destiny hired Raven to help her decipher her dreams and stop the worst of them from happening. They would soon become life lovers.

Raven also stayed for a time with each other. When they meet Raven was in the disguise of Leni Zauber. Both Leni and Sabertooth had been assigned to kill a scientist in Berlin. Raven killed the scientist, but both of them had to stay low so they stayed in the same safe house. Here is where they became lovers, but soon after Raven faked her death so she could leave Sabertooth. During their time together they conceived a child, but Sabertooth didnt know this. The child was Graydon Creed. Raven then gave the child up for adoption, but still kept track of him until he hit adolescence. Graydon grew up to be Homo Sapien. This angered Raven and she left him. Graydon knowing both his parents are mutants and they left him drove him to hate all mutants. He soon lead a mutant hating orginization called Friends of Humanity, and then he became a politician. During one of his speeches he was shot from a distance, the shooter was unknown. Until Raven went time travelling with Jean, Iceman, Toad and Juggernaut.

Later on in Raven's life she had a son named Kurt Wagner with a ancient biblical mutant name Azazeal. during this time Raven was married to Christian Wagner. They were happily married until she learned of Christian's infertility. She then used her powers to have sex with a number of partners wanting another child. Thats when she meet Azazeal. He told her he ruled islands off the coast of Bermuda, amd that he was the father of many mutants called Neyaphem. He also called himself satan and his children demons. Raven was then pregnant, her husband became suspicious because he couldnt have done it. His father told him to get a blood test. Raven killed her father in law and buried him. She then gaved birth to a baby with black hair, yellow eyes, blue skin, and a pointed tail. The villagers thought the two was demons and tried to kill them.

Raven would soon adopt a child named Anna Marie. Anne was living in the woods with a shotgun trusting no one. Destiny saw that Anne would be very important to their goals, Raven gained Anne's trust and they took her in. They became very close for the decade they were together. Raven became very protective over Anne. Raven kept the identity of Mallory Brickman the wife of an U.S senator. Raven kept one shape and stuck through it for years. She also kept her shapeshifting abilities to herself so that she can rise in the government. She made it to the Department of Defense giving her top secret information.

To help her in her activities Raven organized a group called the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. This was made up of Avalanche, the Blob, Destiny, and Pyro. They gained in status when they tried to kill Senator Kelly. They X-Men stopped them. Raven trained Anne who became Rouge. With Rouge on their team they beat the Avengers. During their battle Rouge tried to absorb Ms.Marvel but she fought back to hard. Rouge accidently absorbed her memories and powers permantly. She then feelign herself go crazy she went to Xavier's and asked for help. They didnt know what to say but they accepted her in. Raven thought Xavier brainwashed her to come to him so she set up a rescue mission. It stopped when rouge told Raven that Xavier might be the only person in the world who can help her with her powers. Raven then left still checking on her at times, Raven then started to grow a strong dislike towards Xavier feeling like he stole someone special from her.
Raven was also part of the Freedom Force. during this time anti-mutant thoughts had appeared in a majority of the americans feeling that it was to dangerous to continue what the Brotherhood was doing she gave the government the option to hire them. Their first assignment was to capture Magneto. They did but that was because Magneto wanted to go with them. For helping the government Raven and the rest of the Brotherhood had all their past crimes erased but if they commit a crime it would be taken away. During their times tey had captures the Avengers, they fought with X-Factor to arrest Rusty Collins. Raven battled Cyclops and Jean. She battled the New Mutants, she captured collins and Skids. She led the Freedom Force to attack the reavers on Muir Island on this mission they lost Stonewall and Destiny. Raven then saved Xavier by killing the Shadow King's host. She stayed at Xavier's Mansion until she started going crazy and left with Forge.
Raven came back months later and tried to kill Legion but failed. While she was with Forge he put a chip in her head so that the government could track her. She was then forced to become a member of the team X-Factor. After the government found out she blew a dam up. But actually it was the government who wanted to blame mutants for it. Sabertooth was put on the team so that he would kill Raven, so she wouldnt say anything about what she found out about the dam. During this time on the team she started having true feeling's for Forge. Raven went into hiding after beating Sabertooth and running away from the government. She then went back into the Mallory identity. Using her husbands status she sent the FBI on Sabertooth.

While trying to find out who killed her son Raven lost her powers in a busy office while impersonating a man. She reverted back to her normal look and was arrested. This  destroyed Raven's life, with her they destroyed all of the alias that Mystique created in the government. They also made it where Raven wasn't allowed to access the money her and Destiny made over the years. Mystique attacked everyone around her seeing her life crumble. Mystique's and Rogue's relationship went down when Rogue didnt tell Mystique that the X-Men was going to attack High Evolutionary, who was responsible for mutants loosing their powers. The X-Men succeded and all mutant powers came back, this allowed Mystique to escape jail. Mystique along with others were sent back in time by the X-Factor's living ship. Mystique found out she was the one who killed her son and that Destiny was one of the people who started the anti-mutant orginization. This lead to Mystique's breakdown she then became obsessed with killing. She regrouped the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and tried to kill Senator Kelly. And they also tried to kidnappe Moira MacTaggert. Mystique then impersonated Moira and got access to the Legacy Virus when Mystique found out how to turn the legacy virus on humans she also found a cure. Mystique then blew Moira research facility up and shot Rahne Sinclaire with a gun that depowered her.  Rogue came and tried to calm her down. Mystique told Rogue her plan about using the Legacy Virus on humans, Rogue tried to stop her but Mystique stabbed her in the stomach. Rogue absorbed Wolverine's healing factor and survived. When Mystique confronted the X-Men, Rogue using Wolverine's claws stabbed her in the back. Raven went to the hospital, she told the X-Men that in Destiny's visions she saw mutants had a dark future and that no matter what she did it keeps coming back. Mystique went to prison but escaped. Mystique used Martinique Jason to control X-Corps she had cut Banshee's throat leaving him in critical condition.

Mystique for a while was a double agent for Xavier. She is seen impersonating a man, who called a stripper to his house. The stripper hits the man and he turns into Mystique. The stripper finds a safe which Mystique was looking for. She enlarges her tympanic membrane to hear the clicks to unlock the safe. She asks the stripper what did she want with the machine, and the stripper tells her she was hired to steal it. Mystique then explains that the machine is used to find shapeshifters. Mystique hears men outside and tells the stripper to run, the men then crashes threw the window. Mystique then turns into a little girl and tells the soldiers that she just like pretending to be a grown woman. She knocks out two guards and then turns into the captain. The other soldiers dont know which one to shoot until one of the captain tells them to shoot both of them and that he's wearing a bullet proof vest and it will only sting him but kill the real one. One of them passess out. The other tells the soldier that most men pass out when they get shot with a vest on. The soldier then asks why didnt he pass out. And he replies that he shifted all his vital organs to his lower extremities. Mystique then shifts back into her natural form and escapes out the window. But she is weak and faints on the ground but is captured.

X-Men

Mystique has often been at odds with the X-Men, but she is capable of allying with them for the greater good. Recently, she decided that the world is too dangerous a place for mutants to be on their own, and she sought asylum from her former enemies. At first she posed as a student at the Xavier Institute named Foxx and attempted to seduce Rogue's partner, Gambit. When her true identity was discovered she claimed it was simply a test and that she was acting in Rogue's best interest. She then asked to join the team. Rogue was opposed to Mystique's membership, but the vote went in Mystique's favor. She was allowed to join on a probationary status, and when Rogue was assembling her own strike force she added Mystique in order to keep an eye on her. Mystique ultimately helped Rogue's X-Men in their missions, including in their battle against the Children of the Vault.

Traitor

During her time with the X-Men, Mystique consummated a brief relationship with Iceman. She later revealed herself to be a traitor when she allied herself with Lady Mastermind and Omega Sentinel (who was being possessed by Malice) and defected with them to join Mr. Sinister's Marauders during their attack on the X-Men. At the peak of the battle she shot Rogue, who the Marauders subsequently abducted. She then fought Iceman and Cannonball with the others, but she let Iceman escaped and gave him a brif warning about the future. Later, she had a disagreement with Sinister about what should happen.

Messiah Complex

Mystique stayed with the Marauders, as Rogue was still injured. When Gambit and the other Marauders returned with the Baby Mutant to Muir Island (Marauders base during Messiah CompleX) and give the baby to Sinister. Sinister tells the Marauders to leave, bar Gambit, and it is revealed to be Mystique in disguise, and we see the lifeless body of Sinister dead next to Rogue. In a quick flashback, we see that Mystique forced Sinister to touch Rogue's skin, killing him. All of what has happened has been a ploy to save Rogue, Mystique knowing what to do because of the Destiny's Diaries and she's been plotting with Gambit.

Back in the present, and Mystique is holding the baby as she talks to Gambit. Mystique needs the Baby to save Rogue, and Gambit wonders how she's going to link the two. Mystique then makes the baby's forehead touch Rogue's lips. As Gamvit snatches the baby away, saying that Rogue wouldn't have a baby die for her. Mystique begins to break down when Rogue doesn't wake up instantly, and Gambit gives the baby to the Professor, who's just entered the room. Suddenly, Rogue awakens, and Gambit explains the situation. Rogue isn't happy with Mystique, and says it has to stop, and she touches Mystique. As Mystique is knocked out, it is revealed that every psyche ROgue ever adsorbed and her killer touch from Strain-88, had been cured, and now it's only her and Mystique inside her head.

Cyclops later asked Wolverine to track down Mystique and take her out. Wolverine tracks her all over Afghanistan, and after she causes several people to shoot him, she kills the head of the army, and takes his place. In his office, Wolveirne arrives, and after a small battle in which he calls her an coward she flees in a truck filled to the brim with weapons. To show that she isn't a coward and isn't hiding anything, she morphs to her naked form, and arms herself, ready for battle.

Powers

Mystique is a mutant metamorph who can psionically shift the atoms and molecules of her body so as to change her physical appearance. She can cause herself to look and sound exactly like any human, humanoid, or semi-humanoid being of either sex, wearing virtually any kind of clothing. As such, she almost never wears clothing of her own since she prefers to mimic clothing.

Her control is so exact that she can precisely duplicate another person's retina pattern in her own eyes, finger, palm and skin-pore patterns on her own hands and skin, and vocal cords to match voices to the point of corresponding voiceprints.

She is also able to shift the placement of vital organs in her body to avoid damage from, for example, gunshots. She also possesses a healing factor, a prolonged lifespan, and great tolerance for toxins.

Mystique is limited only by her inability to diminish or increase her own mass. As a result, while she can make herself look exactly like a person who is physically bigger than herself, she will not weigh as much as the actual person that she is imitating. Although she can maintain the form of another person of similar height, weight, and build indefinitely (as with her own appearance as Raven Darkholme), the longer she maintains that form, the greater the strain she feels. If she maintains a bigger form for too long a period, the length of which is directly proportional to the difference in size between that form and her normal one, she will collapse and revert to her normal appearance.

Mystique also cannot duplicate the powers of the person she imitates: for example, when she turned herself into a duplicate of Nightcrawler, she did not gain his ability to teleport.

Mutant Metamorph
Mutant Metamorph

As yet Mystique has not demonstrated any ability to adopt the form of non-humanoid beings, animals, plants, or non-living objects, it is conjectured that she cannot imitate any of these without interfering with the proper functioning of her internal organs and possibly dying. The truth however, like much regarding Mystique, remains shrouded. She has on occasion adapted fins for swimming, and even wings for hang-gliding.
