History
Very little is known about Mystique. What is known is that she is more than 100 years old, and was probably born somewhere in Austria. In one of her earliest appearances she tried to assassinate a U. S. Senator, Robert Kelly. If she had succeeded then the future events chronicled in the story Days of Future Past would eventually occur, and Sentinels would hunt down and kill all mutants under the auspices of the U.S. government.
Mystique is one of the few bisexual characters in comics, having had a long relationship with Irene Adler, Destiny. She also has three known children. She is the biological mother of both Nightcrawler and Graydon Creed, whose father was the mutant Sabretooth. Ironically, Graydon was a mutant-hating human and leader of the racist group, the Friends of Humanity. He was eventually assasinated by Mystique herself. Her third child, by adoption, was Rogue who would eventually join the X-Men after turning her back on the Mystique's Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants.
X-Men
Mystique has often been at odds with the X-Men, but she is capable of allying with them for the greater good. Recently, she decided that the world is too dangerous a place for mutants to be on their own, and she sought asylum from her former enemies. At first she posed as a student at the Xavier Institute named Foxx and attempted to seduce Rogue's partner, Gambit. When her true identity was discovered she claimed it was simply a test and that she was acting in Rogue's best interest. She then asked to join the team. Rogue was opposed to Mystique's membership, but the vote went in Mystique's favor. She was allowed to join on a probationary status, and when Rogue was assembling her own strike force she added Mystique in order to keep an eye on her. Mystique ultimately helped Rogue's X-Men in their missions, including in their battle against the Children of the Vault.
Traitor
During her time with the X-Men, Mystique consummated a brief relationship with Iceman. She later revealed herself to be a traitor when she allied herself with Lady Mastermind and Omega Sentinel (who was being possessed by Malice) and defected with them to join Mr. Sinister's Marauders during their attack on the X-Men. At the peak of the battle she shot Rogue, who the Marauders subsequently abducted. She then fought Iceman and Cannonball with the others, but she let Iceman escaped and gave him a brif warning about the future. Later, she had a disagreement with Sinister about what should happen.
Messiah Complex
Mystique stayed with the Marauders, as Rogue was still injured. When Gambit and the other Marauders returned with the Baby Mutant to Muir Island (Marauders base during Messiah CompleX) and give the baby to Sinister. Sinister tells the Marauders to leave, bar Gambit, and it is revealed to be Mystique in disguise, and we see the lifeless body of Sinister dead next to Rogue. In a quick flashback, we see that Mystique forced Sinister to touch Rogue's skin, killing him. All of what has happened has been a ploy to save Rogue, Mystique knowing what to do because of the Destiny's Diaries and she's been plotting with Gambit.
Back in the present, and Mystique is holding the baby as she talks to Gambit. Mystique needs the Baby to save Rogue, and Gambit wonders how she's going to link the two. Mystique then makes the baby's forehead touch Rogue's lips. As Gamvit snatches the baby away, saying that Rogue wouldn't have a baby die for her. Mystique begins to break down when Rogue doesn't wake up instantly, and Gambit gives the baby to the Professor, who's just entered the room. Suddenly, Rogue awakens, and Gambit explains the situation. Rogue isn't happy with Mystique, and says it has to stop, and she touches Mystique. As Mystique is knocked out, it is revealed that every psyche ROgue ever adsorbed and her killer touch from Strain-88, had been cured, and now it's only her and Mystique inside her head.

Cyclops later asked Wolverine to track down Mystique and take her out. Wolverine tracks her all over Afghanistan, and after she causes several people to shoot him, she kills the head of the army, and takes his place. In his office, Wolveirne arrives, and after a small battle in which he calls her an coward she flees in a truck filled to the brim with weapons. To show that she isn't a coward and isn't hiding anything, she morphs to her naked form, and arms herself, ready for battle.
Powers
Mystique is a mutant metamorph who can psionically shift the atoms and molecules of her body so as to change her physical appearance. She can cause herself to look and sound exactly like any human, humanoid, or semi-humanoid being of either sex, wearing virtually any kind of clothing. As such, she almost never wears clothing of her own since she prefers to mimic clothing.
Her control is so exact that she can precisely duplicate another person's retina pattern in her own eyes, finger, palm and skin-pore patterns on her own hands and skin, and vocal cords to match voices to the point of corresponding voiceprints.
She is also able to shift the placement of vital organs in her body to avoid damage from, for example, gunshots. She also possesses a healing factor, a prolonged lifespan, and great tolerance for toxins.
Mystique is limited only by her inability to diminish or increase her own mass. As a result, while she can make herself look exactly like a person who is physically bigger than herself, she will not weigh as much as the actual person that she is imitating. Although she can maintain the form of another person of similar height, weight, and build indefinitely (as with her own appearance as Raven Darkholme), the longer she maintains that form, the greater the strain she feels. If she maintains a bigger form for too long a period, the length of which is directly proportional to the difference in size between that form and her normal one, she will collapse and revert to her normal appearance.
Mystique also cannot duplicate the powers of the person she imitates: for example, when she turned herself into a duplicate of Nightcrawler, she did not gain his ability to teleport.
As yet Mystique has not demonstrated any ability to adopt the form of non-humanoid beings, animals, plants, or non-living objects, it is conjectured that she cannot imitate any of these without interfering with the proper functioning of her internal organs and possibly dying. The truth however, like much regarding Mystique, remains shrouded. She has on occasion adapted fins for swimming, and even wings for hang-gliding.
