What happened to Marvel in the 90s? The company loomed close to bankruptcy and the covers of the comic book seemed somewhat one dimensional - big, garish, indistinct. Occasionally, though, the garish style worked and this is one cover that I like. Mike Miller is the penciller here producing the image, but I'm going to stick my neck out and say that the work of Saleem Crawford as inker and Gina Going as colourer really helps the picture stand out. I love the way the curves on Ororo's body shine, there's a silkiness about her costume too that really works. Certainly there's an exaggeration in the hips as was the way for most 90s superwomen but there's also plenty of drama here - both women's facial expressions come over very well, plus it's unusual to see Storm looking so peculiarly vulnerable.
I have ranked this cover no 183 as part of a long term project I am producing on my own blog 'marvel-ous' on blogspot.com re: my favourite marvel comic book covers. Please visit http://dmstarz.blogspot.com and check out the other covers that have made my top 250.
