Maia travels with a group of soldiers and her bodyguard-a shadowy assassin known as "the kishion." They travel across a tumultuous sea and arrive at the shores of Dahomey. As she searches for the lost abbey, Maia discovers a countryside that has been infiltrated by the Myriad Ones, leaving blood, blight and bones in their wake. To keep herself and her companions alive, Maia has no choice but to use the forbidden magic of her kystrel, binding herself ever closer to the medium that could very well consume her.
