A Death of Hero In a Blaze of Glory
Who thought the death of Ms. Marvel could be both so tragic and so glorious? Well, thank Brian Reed and Pattrick Olliffe for drafting the final chapter of the, "Death of Ms. Marvel" storyline into something that encompasses both. Without giving too much of the story away, Carol realizes too late that her powers are out of control and effectively killing her. Despite the shocking cliffhanger of the previous issue, Ms. Marvel presses on, fueled by past emotions she once thought lost forever (thanks to Rogue, waaaay back in Avengers Annual #10) and attempts to stop the (now) superpowered terrorist Ghazi. Before she can kill her opponent, Carol is forced to flee the scene high above the skies of Hong Kong and litteraly overloads in flash of brilliance. In a surprise twist, Rick Mason confronts Michael Rossi and Norman Osborn and vows to avenge Ms. Marvel's death. Undetered, Osborn explains to Karla Sofen she is now the only Ms. Marvel.
We knew this was coming -- ever since Carol had had her Binary powers restored by Cru with dire warning just before the two battled the Brood Queen. But the latest storyline was so exceptional, it was difficult to see it end. While we're sure to see an interesting take with a new (supervillain) Ms. Marvel, Carol has spent the last thirty-seven issues showing us what it's like to be a true hero, that it's involves hard decisions, and opportunity for mistakes. Fans have already clamored for Danvers' return and speculation has grown as to how the real heroine of this title will make her comeback.
