If Michael Holt is the 3rd smartest man in the DCU, then who are the first two?

I assume one of them is Lex Luthor, I personally place Bruce Wayne at #5 or so.

smartest men in the DCU...

are you counting 'aliens' or not? just normal humans?

M

#3 Posted by Satyrquaze (4542 posts) - - Show Bio

Well, it's called smartest "man", not smartest "being/entity"... atleast that my way of looking at it.

#4 Posted by Methos (40103 posts) - - Show Bio

ok... smartest male human :D

i'm not sure about michael holt being in there... personally i'd definitely pub vandel savage in the top 5, maybe even the top 3.

bruce wayne is in the top 10... not sure where though... depends on how the characters written...

lex luthor is definitely in the top 3

dunno... it's a difficult one to figure out without taking a look at every evil genius in the DCU

Mr. Terrific easily belongs in the top 3, I think the Atom is probably number one. Lex isnt even in the top 5.

oh i don't know...

lex may not be 'conventionally' smart, but he is definitely a genius in other ways... especially with his planning and scheming...

take a look at 'Red Son', not sure if that counts because it's an elseworld, but that book really shows off how smart Luthor really is

I'm not saying Lex isnt smart, but I dont see him in the top 5 is all.

I brought this up before an another thread a few months ago. The consensus seemed to be that the first two are never mentioned in the comics, but most people think Lex is one of the top two. I personally don't think so.

There have also been allusions that Bruce Wayne may be up near the top. Not necessarily #1 or #2, but up there pretty high.

#9 Posted by Methos (40103 posts) - - Show Bio

i'm not sure about bruce... sometimes he's written as being up on genius level smart, other times he's written as dense as two planks of wood...

M

#10 Posted by Satyrquaze (4542 posts) - - Show Bio

Mr. Terrific's main claim to fame is that he's the "The World's 3rd Smartest Man".

Do by default, he's up there.

Maybe Dr. Sivana?

#11 Posted by Prodigal Son (3472 posts) - - Show Bio

I just wonder what the term "smartest" means in DCU context. Do they really mean "intelligence" as in reasoning ability, or do they mean "smart" as in knowledge? There really is a vast difference between the two.

#12 Posted by Methos (40103 posts) - - Show Bio

"intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit not a vegetable,

Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

:D

M

#13 Posted by Prodigal Son (3472 posts) - - Show Bio

Oh, sure, throw the whole thing off and bring wisdom into it!

If any of the super heroes were "wise" then I think not a one of them would put on a costume and do what they do. Very little wisdom is exhibited among super heroes/villains.

how bout Dr.Strange

#15 Posted by Prodigal Son (3472 posts) - - Show Bio

Captain UK says:

"how bout Dr.Strange"

Wrong universe.

#16 Posted by Methos (40103 posts) - - Show Bio

perhaps ya mean Dr Fate?

nah, he's intelligent but not in the top leagues

M

#17 Posted by Satyrquaze (4542 posts) - - Show Bio

methos says:

"intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit not a vegetable, Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad" :D M"

In that case I'd have to gove it to Captain Marvel, as he has the Wisdom of Solomon.

Captain UK says:

"how bout Dr.Strange"

(facepalm)

He doesn't make it to the DC Universe very often.

#18 Posted by Constantine (16044 posts) - - Show Bio

oh sorry forgot were talkin bout DCU

#19 Posted by Prodigal Son (3472 posts) - - Show Bio

Satyrquaze says:

"He doesn't make it to the DC Universe very often."

Unless we eventually learn that Dr. Strange = Dr. Fate. That would be a pretty neat twist.

#20 Posted by Methos (40103 posts) - - Show Bio

nah, the amalgam universe didn't last that long

Fate's missing the porn star mustache.

Yeah, but he's got a helmet.......

I'm just saying.

Intelligence is a bit to subjective to rank like that. In Checkmate, when Mr T was promoted from White King's Bishop to White King, the only person smart enough to advise him was the Thinker, but he's an AI.

#24 Posted by Methos (40103 posts) - - Show Bio

same could be said for Brainiac...

if we were counting aliens then he's definitely in the top 3

In huamsn, I would place Bruce in the top 3.

"World's greatest detective" must mean something

I would also place ra's al ghul in the top ten.

Photon says:

ohh... i forgot about Ra's Al Ghul... maybe him and Vandel Savage are 1 and 2 :D

It probably puts Bruce in the top #10.

But are Ra's and Vandal intelligent, or just benefitting from their longetivity?

#29 Posted by Owen_Porter (83291 posts) - - Show Bio

Cosmic Sentinel says:

"But are Ra's and Vandal intelligent, or just benefitting from their longetivity?"

Does is matter how they gained there intelligence?

i'd say that intelligence and immortality are directly linked...

you can't be immortal and not have read every book on the planet lol, i bet they have some seriously deep thoughts when they're not plotting evil schemes

Gambler says:

"Cosmic Sentinel says:

That's a good point, maybe "natural intelligence" matters.

#32 Posted by Cosmic Sentinel (3749 posts) - - Show Bio

If you're a pianist you will learn a new tune on the piano a lot quicker than I would, because I don't play. That's not a sign of intelligence, just experience with the instrument. The same is true of any skill, someone with related experience will pick it up quicker than someone who doesn't. Ra's and Vandal are able to take that to a new level because they have time on their side.

#33 Posted by Owen_Porter (83291 posts) - - Show Bio

But does that diminish the fact that there intelligent? I don't believe it matters HOW you gain your intelligence, the thread is who is the smartest man, not who is the smartest only using this method to gain knowledge. Batman is rich and can offered lots of books and tools to hon his mind, does that diminish his intelligence?

quote from highlander...

*you want to play chess against someone who played against Julius Ceaser? he's been playing games of skill and intelligence since before there was writing Mac, he's out of your league."

Joe Dawson talking to Duncon Macleod about a chess match between him and Methos

It could be a simple matter of IQ, or something along those lines.

Gambler says:

"But does that diminish the fact that there intelligent? Batman is very Intelligent, he is the "World's Greatest Detective", he is not however the 1st or 2nd smartest man in in the DCU. He lacks the inventivness, or raw intellectual power that say, the Mad Scientists who took out Black Adam have. Batman doesn't invent the gadgets in his utility belt or in the Batcave, he pays others to do that, he simply applies the gadget to fight crime. Batman is probably one the most Intuitive men in the DCU.

I note that the title is 'Smartest Man in the DCU', what happens if say, Talia Head is smarter than Lex?

Methos,

I miss Duncan's chess matches with Darius.

both of them are smarter than Bruce Wayne, at least in my opinion

also since we want to know who are the two smartest men in the world Barbara doesn't count

she could be one of the top three smartest women in the world now that I think about it

another candidate is Calculator man

Hmm.  I feel like Sivanna is smarter than Batman or Lex Luthor.

But I don't know who I'd call better between Batman and Lex.  They're such a different kinda smart.

And then there's T.O.Morrow...
