Origin
Scott is the son of Izaya, the Highfather of New Genesis. He was traded at birth with Orion, the son of Darkseid the tyrannical ruler of Apokolips to secure peace between the warring worlds. Scott was raised on nightmarish Apokolips in one of it's orphanages run by the sadistic Granny Goodness, who named him "Scott Free". Despite Granny's efforts to break his will, Scott kept escaping her custody. On his frequent trips outside the orphanage, Scott met the rebel Himon and leader of the Female Furies, Big Barda.
Scott eventually escaped Apokolips altogether and fled to Earth. He would later find out that Darkseid allowed his escape to break his pact with New Genesis. It was here that he met escape artist, Thaddeus Brown whose stage name was Mister Miracle and his manager, Oberon. Brown was murdered and Scott, adopting the name Mister Miracle, brought the killers to justice. Scott would later be reunited with Barda, falling in love with her and eventually marrying. They would fight together against Darkseid and both became part of the Justice League Of America for a time.
Death of the New Gods
On Earth, several of the New Gods, including Black Racer and Lightray were found dead, a bloody hole in their chests. Barda was soon among the victims of the mystery killer, killed quickly in her kitchen while Scott was in the next room. An investigation by the Justice League into her death revealed very little, despite the best efforts of Batman, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and Zatanna. Scott darkened the colors of his costume to mourn his wife and traveled with Superman to New Genesis to bury Barda.
On arrival, they learn that the killer has been striking on New Genesis and that the current Highfather, Takion has mysteriously cut off from the source. Himon wishes to investigate the Source Wall, while Orion, believing that Darkseid is the culprit, wants to strike at Apokolips. Darkseid's minions, however, have also been victims of the god-killer. Superman warns Orion to wait for all the facts before accusing Darkseid, which Orion interprets as an insult to his honor and fights Superman. The fight is short lived as Metron arrives, interrupting their melee. His investigation has shown that it cannot be Darkseid, as he does not have the power to kill in such a fashion, but must be someone new. Scott contemplates using the Anti-Life Equation to resurrect Barda, despite his vow to never use it. Superman over hears him discussing it with Orion, who asks Superman to keep an eye on Scott after he has left.
The three of them journey to Apokolips, where they immediately battle Darkseid's forces. When they finally confront him, without Superman as he is unconscious, Darkseid tries to stop them with his partial knowledge of the Anti-Life Equation. Scott, however, has full knowledge and stops him. Darkseid tells them that there is no hope and that he has come to terms with his inevitable death, as they should theirs.
On their return to New Genesis, they learn that Takion is dead, killed while he and Himon investigated the Source Wall. The next suspects are the Forever People, however when Superman, Orion and Scott arrive, they are all dead. Killed in the same manner as the others. Scott used the Anti-Life Equation, the first time in front of Superman, to reanimate their corpses and tell of their murder. While they told of the circumstances, they were unable to reveal the killer's identity. Their corpses disintegrating under Scott's efforts to force them. Superman and Orion suspected that they had given one clue, that their visitor was the person they least expected. They reasoned this was the Infinity Man as he only exists in this dimension by trading places with the Forever People. They did not inform Scott of their suspicions as he was becoming increasingly irratic.
New Genesis is then attacked by Kalibak and Mantis. Scott is almost killed by Kalibak, but Superman and Orion manage to intervene. Scott is now convinved that Orion is the mystery killer and and his sudden disappearance as well as Kalibak and Mantis's equally sudden deaths appear to confirm it. Superman and an increasingly unstable Scott go to confront him on an asteroid where he is seen waiting.
When they arrive, Scott allows the Anti-Life Equation to take over and attacks Orion and Superman. Orion, under the compulsion of the Anti-Life Equation, told Scott that he was there acting as bait for the real killer. They tell Orion they will leave him to wait, but in reality move to another part of the asteroid field to watch over Orion. Orion confronts the killer head on, but Superman and Scott are unable to see who it is. All that is left of Orion is his helmet. Scott and Superman take Orion's helmet to the Source Wall, where they discover a second wall with the statues of those killed by the god-killer. Superman wonders why Himon made no mention of it, when he appears behind them. Superman blasts him with his heat vision, revealing that it is, in fact, the Infinity Man as he had suspected. Scott attacks, but the Infinity Man is powered by the Source. Superman is imprisoned by the Source and forced to watch with Metron, who refuses to intervene. Scott ruptures the Source Wall in an effort to gain more power, but this allows the Source to combine with it's dark opposite, it's goal all along. Scott was no longer able to use the Anti-Life Equation and with Metron, became the last victims of the Source's god killing.
Following the events of the Final Crisis, all the New Gods have been reborn, and Scott Free and his wife are also among them.
