Clichés Galore, But Well Executed
The concept behind Morning Glories has been done in books, movies, TV shows and comics over and over and over. The idea that a few young people - usually teens - get sent to / accepted by / taken to some lab/school where they are studied / trained / manipulated and generally exploited by bad people. It was common in 70s Horror movies like The Fury, and 80s comics like Mai, the Psychic Girl, and of course the X-Men / New Mutants series of titles.
And honestly there is nothing that jumps out about Morning Glories to indicate that it is going to be anything different or unique. Six teenagers who are as different from each other as possible (save for strangely having the same birthday), are accepted into the prestigious Morning Glory Academy prep school. Right from the get go, we know that there is something sinister up here, so that part at least isn't very much of a mystery.
If all of this sounds like it's a comic full of clichés - well it is. But it is an Image comic, so it has great art. And even if the plot is cliché-ridden the scripting out of it is also well done. The whole thing may be little more than an excuse to show hot teens in schoolgirl uniforms, but as of right now it has at least succeeded in holding my attention longer than most comics out there.
