In the Company of Wolves
In hiding from S.H.I.E.L.D., Marc Spector is literally underground, camped out in the sewers. Pondering his situation, he recalls events from 1994...
As Moon Knight, he tries to question a punk. The youth can only stammer, "They're turning people into...things," before being shot by a sniper. Meanwhile, Detective Flint is investigating a series of grisly murders. A coroner tells him, off the record, that the victims were torn apart by dogs--big dogs. Flint leaves a message at Gena Landers' diner, requesting a meeting with Moon Knight. At the rendezvous, beneath the Washington Bridge, Flint shows Moon Knight files on the murders, and he is reminded of his history with werewolves. Elsewhere, Jack Russell, human alter ego of the Werewolf, is a caged captive of some mysterious figures who occasionally draw his blood. In an arena beyond his cell, an appreciative audience cheers a battle between two lycanthropes. Spector, in his guise as cabbie Jake Lockley, overhears his fare, a pair of thugs, discussing some kind of fights, and supplying them with "bottom-feeders". Lockley drops them off at a club named "Lu' Pine", a place he could more easily investigate as millionaire Steven Grant. He and his confidante, Marlene Alraune, visit the exclusive club and begin to snoop around. Drawing more blood from Russell, the ringleader explains that his chemists have been able to use an enzyme from the blood to transform homeless individuals into werewolves unaffected by moon phases. They then pit these beasts against each other in a gladiatorial arena. Grant changes into his Moon Knight outfit and descends into the bowels of the building, finding a dungeon-like chamber where several lycanthropes are caged, while Marlene finds the arena. Moon Knight follows the ringleader and two bodyguards to Jack Russell's cage. With the full moon rising, Russell transforms, and the ringleader intends to pit the Werewolf against three other lycanthropes in the arena. Moon Knight subdues the trio, and when his punch sends the leader toward Jack's cage, the Werewolf, somehow much larger than he had been in the past, tears him apart. Moon Knight runs from the chamber, but sees several gunmen approaching him. He opens all the cages and the freed lycanthropes make short work of the thugs. Then the Werewolf breaks out of his chamber to face Moon Knight. Moon Knight uses all the weapons at his disposal to hold the Werewolf at bay. When Marlene enters the dungeon, and her silver bullets prove ineffective, Spector knows that he has to end the battle quickly. He attacks the Werewolf savagely, coming short of killing him. When the dawn arrives, he lets the human Russell go...
Back in the present, Spector comes out of his reverie, recalling how he refused to become an animal then, and vows to not live like one now. He gathers his things and heads out of the sewers.
