Stumble to the finish
Well, it's the penultimate issue of Moon Knight, and as usual I'm sad to see it go. But as I read this issue, I started to realize how obvious it is that this series was cancelled before it's time. Last issue gave me the impression that issues 11 and 12 would be pure action, driving the series to it's inevitable conclusion as the two sides fight for the Ultron. the problem is, this issue doesn't really give us the impression that anything that big is gonna happen at the climax.
It's a shame, because the story here was solid. Moon Knight makes his plan to get the ultron head back, and executes it with the help of buck. It's an action heavy book, and it's all done rather nicely, plus we see a new personality kicking around Moonies' head. The only real problem is that Mark Spector himself gets little development other than he's kinda crazy, which has been the one consistent flaw in this book. We get some idea of the guilt he's feeling over Echoes' death, but that's because it's mainly told in one or two sentences, not shown. In fact, at one point he's literally told to SHOW, NOT TELL. Besides this big point, the rest of the book is a very well done affair.
The art is far superior to issue 9, another action heavy book, mainly because the poses aren't so awkward or ridiculous as that issue. a few awkward moments once or twice, but nothing unforgivable.
In the end, I'd say that the knowledge that this series is done with next issue is what really hurts this book the most. I expected a bigger climax to this 12 issue arc, but it's obvious that Bendis wanted the series to continue on when he left, and now I fear that the series will be rushed and not get the conclusion it deserves. Here's hoping.
