Moon Knight #10

5

Man oh man, what the heck is Bendis doing to Moon Knight and us readers? You'll be shaking your fist at this comic while also out of your seat and cheering it on.

Moon Knight is crazy. People are dying. The bad guys are about to trounce on Moon Knight and the world. And there's only a couple issues left after this.

The Good

I'm a long time Moon Knight fan. He's one of my favorite characters. I've never thought of him as being crazy but we've seen bits of that in the more recent volumes. This is also something Brian Bendis has amped up big time. As much as I don't like all the craziness, I can't help but love this series. Not only is Moon Knight pretty crazy, Bendis is pulling some crazy stunts in his storytelling. The fact that this series is ending (sadly) makes it all more suspenseful.

There's been a new kingpin in LA. He turned out to be a big time powerful enemy of the Avengers. Moon Knight got the upper hand on him and really pissed him off. Now we're seeing some payback. Things aren't looking good for Moon Knight and those around him. Is it really possible that Moon Knight can be this unhinged? Is the person that was killed last issue really dead? There's so many questions and even with the answers seemingly obvious, I don't want to believe them.

That's what makes this a great series. There's so many things that get me riled up but I'm still loving it.

This issue and series is also making me a big fan of Alex Maleev. I always liked his work but didn't always love it. His style is something to see and the way he presents Bendis' story really adds a lot to the story. I didn't think it'd be right for the series when he was first announced but now I can't see anyone else doing these issues. There is so many great scenes and imagery in this issue.

The Bad

Obviously I'm not crazy with the direction things are going. But because I'm a fan of the character, that isn't a reason to fault the story. It's all being crafted wonderfully. I'm also not a fan of the 'villain' used in this issue. But again, it works for the story.

The Verdict

Dang it, Bendis, I didn't want to like this issue. The fact is, I loved it. I don't want Moon Knight to be crazy. I don't want these characters to die. I don't want this series to end. I hate that we're seeing yet another Moon Knight series reaching its final issue. It's all building up to a huge climax. Knowing that Bendis had a set story to tell and the series ending gives the feeling that anything goes. This could be the end for Moon Knight. This isn't the happy cheerful comics we often see from Marvel. I don't know where Bendis is taking this series but you can bet I will be devouring every last bit of it until the final issue.
