Mongoose

Origin

Very little is known of Mongoose's past, before he came to New York City. He was smuggled out of his country of origin by the villainous Baron Zemo II and his Masters of Evil. He was apparently supposed to join the Masters of Evil on their assault on the Avengers Mansion. The Masters' Absorbing Man and Titania, in disguise, were supposed to pick him up at the airport, but they became involved in a battle with the hero Spider-Man. Mongoose, now that he was in America, decided to forget about the Masters of Evil and set out on his own. Mongoose was next seen attacking the hero Thor, who was at a construction site in his civilian identity of Sigurd Jarlson. Apparently the Mongoose had been hired by someone to kill Thor, for an unknown reason. The Mongoose, using his "cellsmograph," had tracked Thor down while he was in his secret identity. Spider-Man intervened, giving Jarlson enough time to get his hammer and turn into Thor. Spider-Man and Thor fought Mortgoose to a stand still, but Mongoose escaped after creating a diversion. Mongoose broke the support beams holding up the building where they were fighting. Fearing for the lives of the construction workers on the building, Thor held up the building long enough for Spider-Man to fashion some temporary support to avoid collapse. This confrontation eventually causes Thor and Mongoose to become mortal enemies.  

Creation

Mongoose was created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz in 1988 and first appeared in Thor # 391.

Story Arcs

In a later plot against Thor, Mongoose teams up with Quicksand and Count Tagar  to obtain cell samples from Thor. He joins Tagar into using a weapon called the "vivisector" to obtain the samples, while Quicksand causes a distraction as she battles Thor so her teammates could obtain what they were after. Tagar hadn't enough from one sample and orders Mongoose to obtain more. Mongoose kidnaps Masterson in return, though against Tagar's wishes. Mongoose also manages to launch an attack against Thor at Wundagore Mountain  by the ' New Men'. This group is a collection of genetically altered warriors who defend Wundagore. When Thor eventually realizes what was going on, both Mongoose, Quicksand and Tagar are defeated, and Mongoose once again manages to escape after Tagar halted the battle. 
 Mongoose tries to rejoin the New Men, but they deny affiliation with him because they heard of his villainous tricks. Feeling furious over this, Mongoose later attacks both Thor and Erik Masterson in retaliation. He is about to defeat them, but another God called Hercules steps in to assist. Mongoose realizes he had no chance of winning and fled yet again.

Civil War

During the Civil War, Mongoose would be captured by members of the Thunderbolts. Mongoose registers under the Superhuman Registration Act and join the Thunderbolts Army. The Thunderbolts had to fight off cities filled with civilians who were suddenly empowered when the Grandmaster opened up the Wellspring of Power. The Thunderbolts were broken up into numerous squads and sent to various locations throughout the world. Mongoose was part of the Delta squad which also consisted of the three Beetles, Ironclad, and Red Ronin. This group was responsible of maintaining order in Dallas.     

Hunter/Hunted

Mongoose would be a captive of Al Kraven, the son of Kraven the Hunter when he began to collect super-humans with animal themed powers and abilities. Kraven had explosives strapped to their neck and began to strip his captives of their humanity with the use of his jungle chemistry. Kraven would release all his drug induced captives and let them run amok when the Punisher gets involved. Mongoose apparently escapes amongst the chaos.

Powers & Abilities

Genetic engineering by the High Evolutionary granted Mongoose superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, and reflexes.
The Mongoose is a formidable hand to hand combatant. While he has received little formal training, the Mongoose utilizes his superhuman strength with his speed and agility to create a unique and unorthodox fighting style similar to that of Spider-Man.
 
The Mongoose possesses superhuman strength enabling him to lift about 10 tons, he can run and move at speeds that are far superior to that of even the finest human athlete. He has demonstrated sufficient speed to be able to run up the side of skyscrapers. The Mongoose's musculature produces considerably less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of a human being, even the finest human athlete for that matter. He can physically exert himself at peak capacity for up to 24 hours before the build up of fatigue toxins in his blood begins to affect him. 
His body is tougher and more resistant to certain kinds of injury than the body of a human being. For instance, the tissues of his body, particularly his muscles and joines, are designed to withstand the rigors of running at high speeds without being damaged. The Mongoose can also withstand tremendous impact forces. He can withstand impacts that would severely injure or kill a human being, such as falling from a height of many stories or being struck by a superhumanly powerful opponent like Spider-Man and Thor and sustain little to no injury. His agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of even the finest human athlete. His reflexes are similarly enhanced and are superior to those of the finest human athlete.

The Mongoose wears artificial claws on his gloves, and uses gas pellets (causing dizziness and disorientation), and a wrist device used to project concussive blasts. He has also carried a cellsmograph, a device for determining the presence of a living being by identifying its genetic structure. He has also had access to the advanced sky-craft and land vehicles of Wundagore, and once used a Wundagorian "asteroid blaster" to attack Thor.
