Mimic is a mutant with the ability to copy the powers, abilities, and often the appearance of other superpowered individuals.

Earth-12 Mimic

Origin
Mimic was born Calvin Rankin on Earth-12. His power is the ability to copy up to five other mutants' powers, but the powers are only about half as effective.

Mimic started his career as a member of the Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants. He ended up in jail, but was freed by Professor X on the condition that he join the X-Men. He soon became the leader of the X-Men, and enjoys both fame and celebrity status. Mimic played a key role in the positive relationship between humans and mutants in his home reality.

Using Cyclops' optic blast

He was pulled from this reality by the Timebreakers and informed that he had become unhinged from time and would now be a member of a team of five other mutants from other realities, who became known as the Exiles. He was told that his reality was skewed, and as a result the kidnapping of Senator Kelly in his time line went wrong, causing Kelly's death along with 47 civilians. The Exiles mission is to correct errors that occur in alternate earths, otherwise they would be sent back to their home realities (and in the case of Mimic this would mean losing his entire existence and spending the rest of his life on death row). The repair of time lines can range in difficulty and pleasantness from buying a danish to killing a whole lot of people.

Mimic developed a romantic relationship with their team leader, Blink. After Blink was sent back to her home reality Mimic became the Exiles' leader, coming into possession of the Tallus, the device that allows the Exiles leader to communicate directly with the Timebroker.

Brood Mimic

Mimic was with the team on many missions. He spent four years alone on a Brood planet where he was infected by the Brood. The healing factor he copied from Wolverine suppressed the infection, and after being reunited with his teammates he chose to keep it a secret. After sustaining an injury in battle, his healing factor (which was only working at half of Wolverine's capacity to begin with) was not able to heal him while continually keeping the Brood infection at bay. Mimic began to transform into a Brood. During the ensuing battle with his teammates, Mariko Yashida was buried under a ton of rubble and killed attempting to protect the nearby civilians. While Calvin already blamed himself for Sunfire's death, Morph lashed out. He pointed out that it was Mimic's disregard for his teammates that lead to Sunfire's death. Mimic recovered physically, but because of this incident, Mimic swore never to allow himself to kill again.

Recently Mimic was possessed by the reality warping mutant Proteus. Because of his vow not to take another life, Calvin hesitated giving Proteus the chance he needed to take over his body. After choosing Mimic, Proteus realized that his copied healing factor would allow him to remain in the body without exhausting it for longer than a normal person. This eventually completely drained Mimic's life energy away and left his body an empty shell. His body was put into stasis in the Panoptichron, and later the Exiles returned him to his home reality for his burial.

Powers

Steel & Claws

Mimic has the advantage of copying up to five powers at a time at half the capacity. He can retain the powers he's copied after being in the vicinity of the person he is copying for a few hours. His power set as of Exiles 1 were Wolverine's healing factor, heightened senses and bone claws, Colossus's steel skin and super strength, Angel's wings, Beast's strength and agility, and Cyclops's optic energy blast. He later switched Archangels wings for Northstar's speed and flight, and later Beast's strength and agility for Deadpool's healing factor.

Earth 616 Mimic

Enter: The Mimic!

Origin
Calvin Rankin was born human on Earth-616. Calvin's father was a scientist, and as a result of one of his experiments Calvin gained the superhuman ability to copy the powers of any superhuman within close range, becoming the Mimic. Mimic discovered the true identities of the original X-Men accidentally when they were close by and he began to manifest similar abilities. Storming the Mansion, Mimic copied the powers of all five X-Men and tried to convince Xavier to let him join the team. This membership was short lived because of Mimic's attitude. He felt that he was more powerful than the others because of he wielded all of their powers. Xavier removed Calvin's memory, and a now de-powered Mimic was sent away.

Mimic was later able to regain his memories and abilities, and sought out Xavier again. Mimic blackmailed the X-Men, threatening to expose them if he was not given Cyclops' position as leader of the X-Men. Mimic turned on the X-Men after meeting the Super-Adaptoid. During battle with the X-Men, Mimic realized his mistake and turned on the Super-Adaptoid. Mimic and the Super-Adaptoid's powers created a feedback loop, canceled each other out, giving the X-Men the ability to defeat the Adaptoid. Mimic's memory was erased again, and he disappeared again. Mimic later regained his power along with the powers of the five orignal x-men. He was last seen as a captive of the Thunderbolts.

Powers
Earth-616 Mimic displays powers similar to the Exiles Mimic. He can copy powers, abilities, and skills of anyone within close range. Also, he often takes on the unique physical characteristics, and to some degree the appearance of those he copies. Mimic is best known for copying the abilities of the five original X-Men, and his appearance generally involves Cyclops head and facial characteristics, Angel's wings, and Beast's figure (body, hands, and feet). While copying their powers, he has access to Beast's agility and strength (and because of his altered body structure Beast's prehensile feet), Iceman's ice manipulation, Jean Grey's Telekinesis and Telepathy (he has also mimiced Professor Xavier's telepathy), Cyclops' optic blasts, and Angel's wings and ability to fly. Other powers he has copied include Wolverine, Hulk, Banshee, Nightcrawler, and Colossus.

While he too is unable to use his copied powers at the same power level as those he copies, he often exhibits a finer degree of control over his ability than his targets. For example, he is able to turn off certain powers such as Cyclops' optic blasts. This, however, could be more related to the psychological block that prohibits Cyclops from fully utilizing his powers rather than Mimic's level of control, but may also have to do with the level of control and understanding he has over his own powers. It is unknown exactly how many powers or abilities Mimic can manifest, or for what duration he can hold them, as such limitations have not yet been exhibited or stated explicitly. 616 Mimic does have less limitations than that of the Exiles. For instance, in the past 616 Mimic has exhibited the ability to copy more than just five powers at once, possessing at least ten powers at the same time.

Mimic, the Mutant?
Earth-616's Mimic's status as a human or mutant is somewhat contended. Normally, a mutant's powers will manifest around puberty. As this was not the case, Mimic is considered by many to be human with additional powers. It has been suggested that the experiment that originally granted Mimic his abilities did not generate his powers, but triggered the activation of his latent mutant abilities. This suggests that while dormant, the mutant X-Gene may have been a part of his genetic make-up despite his lack of powers. While not the norm, other cases of this have been seen such as the mutant Polaris whose latent abilities were activated by Mesmero. The general consensus is that this Mimic is not a mutant, but the margin may be overstated.

Other Realities

The Big M

Earth-5423
Another Mimic is called The Big M, and was his worlds greatest criminal and leader of his worlds Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants. Finding the Exiles' Mimic on his world he struck out, believing that Mimic to be good and honest because of a charmed life and happy upbringing. Using his telepathy, The Big M read the Exiles' Mimic's mind and realized that the only difference between the lives they lead is that while one of them accepted Xavier's offer of training and help, the other rejected and sought a darker path. This realization that the Exiles Mimic was able to fight for good while not living the charmed life that The Big M was jealous of allowed The Big M to stop his self-pity, and he reformed the Brotherhood as his world's X-Men. He possessed the powers of Magneto, Professor X and Cannonball. The other two are not known.

Earth-33629
There is also a Mimic on Earth-33629, seemingly with the same powerset as Exiles Mimic had in Exiles 1. He is a member of an alternate team of Exiles.
