Another Grand Slam
As a jaded old comic fan with two kids in diapers, my money rarely goes to new comics these days. With price increases, over-production, and less money in my pocket than ever, it's truly rare that a new comic comes along with enough awesome sauce to cause me to pull the change out of the couch cushions.
This is one of those books.
I actually read a friend's copy of this book and liked it so much that I went to the store and bought it. I felt the book was so well done, it deserved to be paid for.
Specific notes about this issue:
I don't know if it was the way the cell looked at the prison, or the phrase "Don't you idiots think I planned this?" at the end of the last book, but something made Nemesis' actions in this issue utterly predictable. It wasn't but three panels into the book and I knew it was all a ploy to get the family out of protection.
However, I wholly didn't expect Nemesis to use the children for the incredible headline he did, which took me reading the page two or three times to truly understand the depths of his cruelty. Like many people, I enjoy rooting for the villain sometimes, but his defilement of children really turned me off, which was probably what it was intended to do.
Until this issue, Nemesis has been raging against "the Man", and I'm sure I'm not the only one who could get on board with that, but this one tipped the scales, flipping my allegiance to the side of the Chief, who I know is doomed to fail.
Here's to hoping issue 4 is everything I dream and more. Regardless, I'll be forcing friends and family to read the series as well as accompany me to the theater. :)
