More like Shuma-Bore-ath
Shuma-Gorath; haven't seen that guy in a while. And I think there's a reason for that.
See, Shuma here has a few attributes that make him a less than appealing villain. One: he's fairly one-sided. All he wants is to escape his dimension into ours, without any big goals after. It makes him fairly uninteresting as a figure. Two: the promise of power. This guy is supposed to be super powerful, but, because he's still trapped spiritually in his dimension, he's not as powerful as he could be. This is something of a classic cop-out to allow for a "big threat" to exist that actually is pretty tame, and thus disappointing overall. And Three: he lacks visual interest. Yes, he's a giant green cyclops octopus, but that doesn't make for a terribly interesting character to look at. Couple that with his inability to really move around and his attacks being mostly bland when it comes to appearances, and this is a less than cool looking character. Sure, more interesting that Proxima from a physical standpoint, but she had better dialogue and motives that kept her a little interesting.
And this is what really cripples this issue. We see a lot of the same problems from the last few issues as well (over-explanation, generally bland fights, and over-reliance on the thematic portion of the series), but this is what really hit the nail on the head for me. And I get that this is a Infinity oriented story still, so I'm hoping that is what really holds this book back. Because, unless the story starts picking up soon like I saw in the first issue, I might end up shelving this series and calling it a day.
