    Origin

“I've died and been reborn a thousand times and died again, but in the five thousand years I've been alive, I've rarely thought back to the beginning of the secrets I found there. Unfortunately, secrets never die when you're immortal.”

With 5,000 years of history behind him, Methos is the oldest known surviving Immortal in the Highlander universe. Not much is known about him because he finds it safer to keep his exploits secret.

    Creation

    No Caption Provided

Being the product of a movie/television show, Methos was first written by J.P. Couture and portrayed by Peter Wingfield. As translated into the comic medium directly following the movie "Highlander: Endgame," he was first written by Brandon Jerwa and drawn by Carlos Rafael.

    Evolution

    No Caption Provided

Having been around for thousands of years, Methos has been everything (see his exploits below); from village pillager to book nerd at a college. Regardless of the roles he's played in society, he tries to remain aloof from others as he attempts to stay alive.

Methos is a survivor, all he wants is to be left alone so that he can continue being who he is. Methos is the consummate actor, he can blend in to any environment or situation and be quite happy, throughout everything though, he is a friend to Duncan MacLeod and has risked his life several times for him.

What do you expect? Einstein? Freud? Buddha? I'm sorry, I'm just a guy.

The first time you meet the character is in the Highlander episode titled "Methos." When he meets MacLeod, he is posing as a graduate student living in a small apartment. Much to Duncan MacLeod’s disappointment, Methos isn’t the great man that everyone had thought he would be. Methos has cultivated a bookish exterior to make sure that no one pays too much attention to what is beneath the surface.

“I'm in charge of finding myself, and I make sure it never happens.”

At this point in his life, Methos has infiltrated The Watchers again, his current task: To research the mythical immortal Methos. Basically Methos has been chosen to research himself for the watchers and write his own chronicle. His only allies who know his true identity are MacLeod, Joe Dawson and Amanda.

As the series progressed his role as MacLeod's friend, adviser and protector grows and he becomes more of a brother to MacLeod, helping him in various situations and coming to his rescue even when he isn’t wanted. He kills the immortal Kristen, whom he sees as a danger to MacLeod, and he helps to rescue MacLeod from a dark quickening.

One of the most tragic episodes in the Highlander series shows Methos falling in love with a mortal woman, Alexa Bond. Alexa is dying from cancer and has only a year to live, this Methos believes is the world’s ultimate punishment for him, to find his soul mate after all this time and have her ripped away from him before they have shared even a year together.

Not until fifth season does Methos' sordid past begin to be revealed, Methos is forced to face his past as one of the Four Horsemen. He swears an oath to his former brother Kronos that he will kill MacLeod, but then he plays MacLeod and Kronos against each other until a victor emerges. In the end, he sides with MacLeod by killing his brother Silas. Still, these episodes show his considerable skill as a survivor and manipulator

I killed. But I didn't just kill fifty, I didn't kill a hundred. I killed a thousand. I killed ten thousand. And I was good at it. And it wasn't for vengeance. It wasn't for greed. It was because... I liked it. Cassandra was nothing. Her village was nothing. Do you know who I was? I was Death. Death, Death on a horse. When mothers warned their children that the monster would get them, that monster was me. I was the nightmare that kept them awake at night. Is that what you want to hear?!

He has been both a blood-thirsty killer and a doctor, but neither defines who he is. He is a survivor, but he repeatedly risks his life for his friends. After 5,000 years, Methos has become so complex that probably even he cannot decipher himself.

    3000 BCE

I grew up, the second son of three boys and two girls, in an oasis village, surrounded by the deserts of what would later be Egypt. My family had made their home in the oasis for over 100 years. My father claimed a vague relation to an extinct royal court. My mother had descended from a line of traders who had settled in the area when she was just a baby. In the shade of fig trees and palms, my family made its living bartering with the traders who pass through the oasis.

When I was 28 years old, our oasis began to run dry. My family decided to migrate to another oasis, but on the way a sandstorm trapped and killed us. This was my first death, though I didn't realize it at the time.

A Bedouin scouting party found and revived me. I stayed with them for many years, learning the ways of the desert and how to find water and food, until it became obvious that I wasn't growing older. They thought I was a god or a demon — both of which were unwanted in their home — so they forced me to fight their best warrior to the death. This was the second time I died.

When I revived again the next morning, they tied my hands and banished me to the desert with no weapons or water. I stumbled upon a pile of bones and used them to cut my bindings.

    3000 BCE

Petra - I travel to a hidden settlement that would later be called Petra and settle with the Nabataeans who camped there. I live there many years and learn to carve out caves from the stone walls that protected the camp's location. When it becomes apparent that I'm not aging, I know it's time to move on.

    Methos takes his first head.

    3000 BCE

Sinai - I lived in the desert, married to a beautiful nomad girl. Then, in what has come to be known as the Smiting of Sinai, the Egyptian Pharaoh Djer orders the slaughter of all nomads. My wife is killed when Egyptian soldiers attack our tribe. Distraught, I wander the desert for months until I'm caught stealing figs and brought before the Pharaoh.

Djer is Immortal, but instead of punishing me, he makes me his protegé. He plans for me to be his successor. I plan to avenge my wife's death.

I bide my time until one night, when Djer is sleeping, I creep outside the window of his bedchamber and shoot him with a poison dart. Before he revives, I bind him in burial wrappings and place him in a sarcophagus, dooming him to spend eternity as a mummy. The next morning, I become the new Pharaoh of Egypt.

    2900 BCE

Egypt - Egyptians start using hieroglyphics

    2575-2551 BCE

Dynasty 4, Old Kingdom - Snefru, ruler of Egypt, perfects pyramid building.

    2500 BCE

Methuselah's grandson, Noah, has the Methuselah Stone.

    2409 BCE

Sun Tzu the Immortal is "born."

    2400 BCE

I was 603 years old (by my best estimation) when I noticed that some of the people I met gave off a unique feeling — I could sense their presence. One of them, Elijah, spoke of a man named Menahem who told tales of others like us who died at least once and returned from the dead.

Menahem once met a women who told of seeing a man like us fall from a such great height that his head was ripped from his body. She waited for him to return to life, but he didn't. Menahem also met others like us who inspired great anger in him — so much that he wanted to kill them even though he had just met them.

Menahem lived for 750 years and eventually we called him one of the Ancient Ones.

    2400 BCE

At the time, I had begun to resent mortals for their fear and prefer the company of other Immortals. I had fought with some Immortals, but the battles always ended with their death. My first real battle with another Immortal was with a particularly unlikeable guy named Joseph. Remembering Menahem's story, I deliberately swung my sword at Joseph's neck.

After his beheading, I felt a great trembling around me. A mysterious wind grabbed me and threw me to the ground. My mind was filled with visions of places I had never been and people I had never known. I thought I was hexed by some sort of magic or sorcery. I wandered to an inland sea, trying to understand what had happened. It was a while before I beheaded someone again.

    2400 BCE-2100 BCE

I meet Kronos and his friend Silas, who share my distaste for mortals. Caspian is the last to join our band. Silas has an idea to use our power to wreak havoc among mortals. We become known as the Four Horsemen and rule the countyside for several hundred years.

On one of our raids we encounter an Immortal living in a small village with mortals who had accepted him despite his inability to age. Kronos takes his head. This is the first I know of someone besides me intentionally receiving a Quickening. After this, Silas and Caspian hunger to experience it for themselves. Fearing their betrayal, I strike out on my own, avoiding contact with Immortals for the next few years

    2100 BCE

Ur, Mesopotamia - I lived in the city of Ur of the Chaldeans around the time of Ur-Nammu, king of Sumer and Akkad (2112-2095). There I became friends with a 100-year-old Immortal named Abraham. We worked together for several years on many of the king's construction projects, sharing what knowledge we had of Immortals. From time to time, we met and fought other Immortals.

    2000 BCE

Ammaletu the Akkadian sees Gilgamesh come back to life and subsequently creates the Watchers.

    2000 BCE

Tibet - Sun Tzu the Immortal enters a Tibetan monastery.

    1994-1523 BCE

Hsia Dynasty - Beginning of Chinese civilization.

    1664 BCE

Egypt - I do Pharaoh Merneferre Ay (1664-1641) a favor, solve a political dispute or two, and get a royal medallion as a reward.

    1664-1573 BCE

Albion - I spend about a hundred years wandering this island and enjoying its good beer, friendly women and intriguing henge monuments. Hated the abysmally chill, dank weather though. During that time I try to groom the brooding young Prince Amar for future kingship but when the crops fail, Amar sacrifices himself.

    1573 BCE

Malta - On the way from Albion to Egypt, Western Bird, the Levantine ship I'm traveling on, puts in at Malta. The women there are friendly too — when it pleases them to be.

    1573-1570 BCE

Egypt - I help future pharaohs Kamose and his brother Ahmose in their battle against sadistic Hyksos overlords. I also face the Immortal Hyksos prince Khyan, but fail to take his head.

    1570 BCE

Ur, Mesopotamia - When I was around 1380 years old, a 100-year-old Immortal named Joshua came hunting for Abraham's head. Their fight outside the city walls eventually approached the boundary of an old burial ground. I felt this strong sense of dread. I knew Abraham felt it too, because he started to edge away from the boundary. When he stumbled, Joshua struck, but the moment his blade touched Abraham's neck, it stopped and fell to the ground. Joshua vanished as though he had never been there.

    1300 BCE

Beginning of Hellenic (Ancient Greek) civilization.

    1200 BCE

Troy, Turkey - I see Helen of Troy. She doesn't have that great a face, and it only launches a hundred ships, not a thousand.

    1000 BCE

Bronze Age - I ride with Kronos, Silas and Caspian as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

    1000 BCE

A pre-Immortal Cassandra is taken in by a nomadic Bedouin tribe.

    1000 BCE

Olympia, Greece - I win a foot race or two and the Ancient Greeks carve a life size marble statue of me crowned with laurel leaves.

    904 BCE

After 1300 years of life, the Immortal Abraham dies. I make my way to Jerusalem to enjoy the anonymity of a big city and get employment as a master stone cutter.

    904 BCE

Jerusalem - I learn about the Watchers after overhearing a group of people discussing some Immortal names that I recognize. When I show interest in their conversation, they invite me to one of their meetings. There I meet Ruth... tall, lovely, opinionated and outspoken. She had taught herself to read and write, skills that many men found off-putting in a woman.

I tell them my name was Alexander so I wouldn't be recognized as an Immortal. Later on, I learn that my low profile had paid dividends... Methos is virtually unknown in their records, mentioned only in passing.

    904 BCE

Jerusalem - I share the secret of my immortality with Ruth, only to find that she had already suspected the truth. She had seen something in my eyes that gave me away. We get married soon after. When I'm unable to father a child with Ruth, I realize that I've never actually heard of an Immortal man or woman having children.

Using the Watchers' records, I confirm that though Immortals can't have children, there's not yet a finite number of Immortals. I learn about Quickenings, the Game and the Prize.

The Watchers begin to grow in membership and reach. Several smaller factions begin to form. Most support the official policy that Immortals should be watched in order to positively influence the outcome of the Game and protect humanity from outcomes like the abuses of the Horsemen. Some renegade groups, however, think all Immortals are abominations and not worthy of any life. I quit my building job to devote myself full-time to the Watchers.

    900 BCE

Jerusalem - Kronos finds me as he's passing through the city and unimaginatively resorts to blackmail — he will leave Ruth and I alone in exchange for us giving him information about the Watchers. On the day of the exchange, Kronos instead challenges me to a fight. I almost take his head but Ruth and a group of Watchers intervene and capture Kronos. They plan to take him to an underground chamber that was part of an ancient prison and trap him there for eternity.

Though disappointed in Ruth for knowingly marrying an Immortal, they don't turn us in because I'm not a danger to them and it would upset the entire organization. Ruth and I leave the city on an extended "assignment."

    852 BCE

Ruth dies. I go to Tibet to learn about the spiritual side of existence. I begin as a helper in a monastery, cutting wood and hauling water in service to the monks. I get the opportunity to learn their written language and read their books.

After proving to them that I'm here to study and I'm not looking for quick answers, the monks agree to train me. It's like being in the military, with physical exertion and plenty of weapons training. My master Lin Chi teaches me how to read people's intentions by the way they carry themselves.

    832 BCE

Tibet - After 20 years of seeking the truths, Lin Chi tells me that the time has come for me to study with his master. His master turns out to be a 1577-year-old Immortal, Sun Tzu. I'm his first Immortal student. Sun Tzu had lived here this long by pretending to be a different person drawn from the ranks of the monks every 50 years. He believes in a benefic Creator who would never allow a tyrant to win the Prize. I spend many years training physically and mentally with Sun Tzu.

    800 BCE

Tibet - Li Quan, the keeper of the temple, dies. He's replaced by Wang Xi. Sun Tzu tells Lin Chi, now approaching 80 years, the truth about our immortality.

Sun Tzu teaches me to become a philosopher warrior, to find balance between my soul and mind. Wang Xi teaches me the fighting style of his native region.

    706 BCE

Tibet - After calling the temple home for 126 years, Sun Tzu says it's time for me to return to the world and apply all that I've absorbed. I am 2271 years old.

    700 BCE

I begin to use Ancient Greek in my journal.

    100-44 BCE

Rome - Knew Julius Caesar's favorite food — no, it wasn't salad — and shared the stage with him once.

    74 BCE

Rome - Contrary to the Watcher Chronicles, it's really that sniveling weasel Marcus Aedilies and not Peter Gaicus (the greatest swordsman in Rome) who takes the head of Titus Marconus. And Aedilies kills Marconus in a vomitorium, not outside the Forum. I had a tidy little sum wagered on Marconus too. I was hoping to use my winnings to buy a summer place outside Herculaneum.

    27 BCE

Roman Republic collapses, beginning of the Roman Empire.

    1 CE

I leave the Four Horsemen for good this time...

    1-100 CE

Rome - I was a connoisseur of the cooking of Marcus Gavius Apicius, early Rome's favorite cook. What he could do with lentils and chestnuts... mmm...

    34-35 CE

Rome - I was Remus, a slave — er, adviser — in the household of Roman Senator Valerius Petronius. We were trying to make Petronius the next emperor. Unfortunately, I said no to Petronius' wife, Druscilla the Emasculator, she cried rape, and I got nailed to a cross instead. That's the last time I got involved in politics... and the last time I got between a married couple.

    38-68 CE

Rome - Knew how tall Nero, the Roman emperor, was.

    423 CE

Lutetia, France (Lutetia Parisiorium, meaning "mud huts," is the Roman name for what eventually became Paris) - Ahaziah of Romoth Gilead dies in front of a bunch of witnesses. The Watchers think Ahaziah is one of my aliases.

    476 CE

    Roman Empire fell.

    600-700 CE

Gaul - Holy and/or magic spring was lost until I take Duncan there in 1996.

    765 CE

Crossed the Atlantic to Iceland in a rowboat with six Irish monks. No facilities. And they sang the whole time. Hated the water ever since.

    900-997 CE

The last time Kronos and I saw Silas before the Horsemen were reunited briefly in 1997.

    1000-1100 CE

The last time I felt guilt — I swear!

    1300-1650 CE

England & Europe - I listened to the screams of midwives being burned by women they had nursed through labor because they thought they were witches.

    1368-1644 CE

China, Ming Dynasty - Ming vases were a dime a dozen.

    1453

Germany - Majored in medicine and dueling at the University of Heidelberg.

    21 Dec 1592

Scotland - Duncan MacLeod was born in Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel.

    1637

Bristol, England - Morgan Walker's sorry life begins.

    1671

Near Gibraltar - Morgan Walker's sorry life ends — for the first time — when he drowns in a storm off Gibraltar.

    1795

The last time I faced an Immortal in combat before meeting Duncan.

    1808

New Orleans, Louisana, US - Under the alias of Dr. Benjamin Adams, I administered to slaves, including the brother of a slave named Charlotte. Morgan Walker kills Charlotte for sleeping with me then hunts me down. He almost catches me twice, but I finally escape when I reach Charleston, North Carolina, and board the first ship out of the harbor.

    June 1816

Switzerland - Partied and read poetry with Lord Byron, Percy Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft under the alias of Dr. Adams. I was Byron's first teacher. Byron's Watcher Dora Rossi speculates that I was a lover to both Mary and Byron. Byron kills Hans Kershner, the jealous husband of one of his conquests. Mary witnesses the Quickening and Byron's resurrection from a mortal wound. I tell her about Immortals and she uses this and a dream she had as the basis for her novel, Frankenstein.

    Between 1816 and 1900

Arizona, US - As Ben Adams, I pull a scam with the McQuarrie brothers but that whore Veronica, who not only participated in the scam but swore she loved me, tips of Sheriff Willy Brunton. The next thing I know, he and his posse are hunting me down in the hopes of making me the guest of honor at a public lynching in the backwater mining town of Fraziers Well.

I finally escape by jumping over the rim of a canyon but still die. I'm found by Little Crow, 10-year-old Indian boy, who of course tells his father Crow's Feather and their tribe all about me. However, the dead coming back to life doesn't surprise them because they have legends of long-lived beings who can only be killed among lightning and fire. Fortunately for me, their stories also say that these beings are messengers of the Great Spirit and should be treated with honor.

    1867

Aqua Dulce, Texas, US - Duncan is a Texas Ranger chasing a killer named Melvin Koren (aka Kronos). Koren is "killed," but gets away from Duncan.

    1900

Flagstaff, Arizona, US - On another "adventure" in the wild west, I got on the wrong side of the law. The Sheriff's posse planned to hang me at dawn, but I was rescued by Sundance.

    1900

US - Broke into a tough vault with Butch and Sundance.

    1960-1985

Shared a stage with the Rolling Stones.

    1965 - 3 July 1971

Byron takes on the alias of Jim Morrison.

    1984-1985

I work as a historian in the Watchers.

    1987-1996

Paris, France - I'm given a Special Research Assignment to work on the Methos Chronicles. I become the Watchers' top Methos scholar.

    Feb 1995

Alexa is diagnosed with an inoperative cancer. She quits college three credits shy of getting her teaching credentials to become a part-time waitress at Joe's Bar in order to accommodate her treatments.

    25 Feb 1995

The Watchers issue a bulletin requesting all field agents to be on active alert for Kalas.

    6 March 1995

Paris, France - I introduce myself to Duncan MacLeod after finding out that Kalas killed my friend, Watcher Donald Salzer.

    29 May 1995

Paris, France - Kalas kills Don's wife Christine and gets a hold of the Watcher database that Don and I were working on. Kalas threatens to expose Immortals to the world.

    3 June 1995

Paris, France - Duncan beheads Kalas atop the Eiffel Tower.

    5 June 1995

Watcher Martin Matthews is added to the Hall of Martyrs for his death at Kalas' hands after following him back to his hideout. The Watcher policy manual is updated on the proper use of cellular phones in the field.

    25 Oct 1995

Seacouver, Washington, US - As Adam Pierson, I send Kristin Gilles' Watcher, Veronique Millet, away to watch Richie's house, on the pretense that Kristen might show up there. Then I kill Kristin. The Watchers think Duncan or Richie killed her.

    Nov 1995

Seacouver, Washington, US - Joe throws a farewell party for Alexa. Two of his bartenders, Mike and Lou, give her a satin negligee as a going-away present.

    3 Nov 1995

Seacouver, Washington, US - Alexa and I begin our tour of the world. I want to start our trip with a sunrise at the Grand Canyon (which I've visited a dozen times over the years). After that we'll head to Bourbon Street in New Orleans, go up the Atlantic Coast to Washington, take in a little piece of West Virginia, collect our passports in New York then fly off to see the wonders of Egypt. At least that was the plan. The very first day a rainstorm strands us overnight in the Coronet Hotel, so no Grand Canyon sunrise. However, it's not a total disaster as that night Alexa and I make love for the first time.

    4 Nov 1995

Grand Canyon, US - We make it to the main gate of the Grand Canyon only to be turned away by the Arizona State Police. Unbelievably, the Canyon is closed because of a governmental shutdown! Instead, we check in early at the Crow Canyon Bed & Breakfast in Flagstaff, Arizona. I know the bed and breakfast owner, Mary Crow, through her son Garrett, with whom I went to school 10 years ago.

I had asked Mary to prepare the perfect marriage bed for us — a candlelit suite with a bed full of roses — and that afternoon we are married, not in the modern, legal way, but with a gold and gemstone necklace for Alexa, an anointing of her body with Frankincense and, finally, the ancient uniting of our bodies.

Afterwards, with single-minded determination, I head to town to prepare a surprise for Alexa, not knowing how hurt she would be when she woke up and found me gone. Mary gives Alexa a smoky-red quartz figurine — her contribution to the hope chest — while she waits for my return.

    5 Nov 1995

Flagstaff, Arizona, US - I return to the bed and breakfast just after midnight with newly bought stuffed backpacks. It's not like the government can fence off the whole Grand Canyon, so we're going to hike in. But again, my determination gets in the way — it never occurs to me that the thin mountain air, uphill climb and heavy backpack would be too much for Alexa. We head back to the bed and breakfast.

The next day I try calling everyone I know — from local rangers to an Undersecretary at the White House — to see if someone can get us into the canyon, but no luck. Garrett arrives that evening and after hearing of our plight, takes us to a lookout over a gorge, a holy place known to his people.

Garrett, somehow guessing that I'm Immortal, asks me what the place was like before when his people roamed the Painted Desert. We climb over the railings to stand at the edge of the gorge and feel the ancient winds for a moment. "That's what it felt like," I tell Garrett.

Garrett leaves Alexa and I to spend the night overlooking the gorge. Alexa still worries about whether our souls are truly married. I declare my love for her, and she for me, and with the quartz figurine, we exchange marriage vows, then make the canyon ours.

    Nov 1996 and Feb 1996

Venice, Italy - Alexa haggles with a 200-pound gondolier and has him cowed.

    Feb 1996

Cairo, Egypt - My world tour with Alexa is interrupted when I run into another Immortal. At midnight I go off to fight. The next morning we leave Egypt for Jerusalem. We spend a week there then go to Athens.

    10 Feb 1996

Seacouver, Washington, US - Duncan kills Annie Devlin. I drop by my home in Paris and find a message from Duncan on my answering machine asking about Immortals who have a grudge against Joe. I return the call and tell Richie about a pattern of unexplained decapitations I had been sorting out over the past few months.

    25 Feb 1996

Seacouver, Washington, US - Duncan kills Coltec and receives a Dark Quickening.

    1 March 1996

Athens, Greece - Joe calls to tell me about Duncan's Dark Quickening. I leave Alexa, telling her that I have to go to France for a few days on "business."

While I'm gone, Alexa visits a collection of statuary at the Museum at Olympia, life size portrayals of Greek citizens in the second millennium BC, and finds one that looks just like me — an ancient ancestor, she thinks.

    March 1996

Le Havre, France - I find Duncan and save him from an angry husband with a shotgun whose wife he slept with. I tell you, what would he do without me?

    5 March 1996

Limay, France - Duncan kills Sean Burns while under the influence of the Dark Quickening.

    9 March 1996

Athens, Greece - I return to Alexa and find the photos she took at the Museum at Olympia. When Alexa sees me with the photo of my statue, she realizes that the resemblance is too close for it to be an ancestor. I tell her of my immortality.

    March 1996

Paris, France - I leave Alexa in a hospital in Geneva and return to Paris to try and find the Methuselah Stone, the only thing that can save her life. I fail and the Methuselah Stone is lost forever.

    25 March 1996

Geneva, Switzerland - I return to Sacré Coeur Hospital to find Alexa near death. I anoint her with myrrh, climb into the bed and embrace her in our last hours together. She dies that night. I consider taking Alexa back to Santorini because she loved it there, but I don't want her to be so far away from me, so I return to Paris and bury her in Montparnasse cemetery.

    12 April 1996

Paris, France - My regular poker game with Marcus Constantine and some of his employees from the Musée National des Antiquités is canceled permanently when Constantine is beheaded by Avram Mordecai.

    May 1996

Paris, France - After almost 2000 years, I get involved in a married couple's dispute at Duncan's behest and almost die for my efforts.

    7 May 1996

Paris, France - David Shapiro, son of Watcher Director Jack Shapiro, is placed on field work early due to a manpower shortage.

    5 June 1996

Paris, France - Jack Shapiro kills Jacob Galati in retaliation for Galati killing his son. I decide that it's the perfect time for a vacation in Tibet.

    June 1996

Joe writes the final entry for Galati in the Chronicles since Galati didn't have his own Watcher.

The Watchers consider me Absent Without Leave (AWOL).

    17 July 1996

Paris, France - The Watchers recommend that Dr. Amy Zoll, Marcus Constantine's former Watcher, be put in charge of the Special Research Assignment: Methos. She's allowed to continue researching Constantine since both projects are considered cold files.

    4 Aug 1996

Seacouver, Washington, US - I find MacLeod, Richie and Joe glued to the TV in Joe's bar, carrying on about brotherhood, teamwork, and the Olympic spirit. I tell them what the Olympics were really like.

    20 Sept 1996

Seacouver, Washington, US - Richie kills William Culbraith soon after Culbraith kills the Immortal posing as me.

    31 Oct 1996

Seacouver, Washington, US - I try out for the Wheel of Time game show but I don't make it to the finals because I guess that it was Tom Jones and not Chubby Checker who popularized the twist.

    7 Nov 1996

Bordeaux, France - A special operations agent, assigned by Melanie Hind, follows Duncan to our secret meeting in the Elysium church and overhears me describing Cassandra's escape from the Horsemen. I should have known that that "come alone" stuff never works.

    8 Nov 1996

Bordeaux, France - Duncan kills Caspian.

    10 Nov 1996

Bordeaux, France - Duncan kills Kronos and I kill Silas. Cassandra almost kills me but nobody kills Cassandra. I return to Paris by train, taking the flute Silas carved in the asylum with me, a final token of our friendship.

    November 1996

Paris, France - Dr. Amy Zoll is assigned to sort out my "sick practical joke." Addendums are added to many of the entries I made in the Chronicles pointing out where the Watchers think I tampered with the truth. I now have a field Watcher assigned to me, Timothy Wyatt who, along with Dr. Zoll, is trying to track me down.

    12 Nov 1996

Dr. Zoll postulates that Silas was my student and jokingly asks Joe to ask me.

    20 Nov 1996

Dr. Julia Harami speculates that Caspian may have been suffering from mad cow disease caused by eating human brains, which would account for his insanity.

    28 Nov 1996

Dr. Zoll makes a progress report on the attempt to identify the Horsemen's other aliases by going through the Watchers' incomplete Chronicles (the ones with no first death or final death information).

    20 Dec 1996

Dr. Zoll writes the Watcher Tribunal pointing out that it is meaningless to court martial Adam Pierson since he does not exist. And since he already quit the Watchers, they can't throw him out. And taking Methos' head would violate the new kinder, gentler approach the Watchers are trying to take.

    Dec 1996

I'm dishonorably discharged from the Watchers in absentia.

    3 Jan 1997

Dr. Zoll and Dr. Harami make a report on their research to date on references to the Horsemen in myths and legends.

    20 April 1997

Paris, France - Duncan kills Byron. Joe e-mails Dr. Zoll informing her that Benjamin Adams was one of my aliases.

    16 May 1997

Paris, France - Jason Landry suffers a stroke while trying to warn Duncan about an ancient demon he must defeat.

    19 May 1997

Paris, France - Duncan is tricked into taking Richie's head by something which claims to be an ancient demon.

    18 July 1997

The Watcher Tribunal asks Joe to accept a part-time professorship at the Watcher Academy and he agrees. Joe reports that Duncan sold the dojo in Seacouver and disappeared. Joe starts an Investigative Search Team to try and find him.

    July 1997

The Watchers sell Joe's Seacouver bar and use the money to buy Le Blues Bar in Paris. Joe is transferred to Paris.

    15 Nov 1998

Joe's daughter, Amy Brennan-Thomas, is reassigned to Research as an apprentice to Dr. Zoll on the Methos project on the grounds that she doesn't have the heart for field work.

    16 April 1999

New York City, US - A Hyksos sword arrives at the Branson Collection for a show on "The Hyksos: Conquerors of Egypt."

    22 April 1999

New York City, US - The first of a series of ritual slayings begin. Immortal (and insane) Hyksos Prince Khyan thinks the sacrifices will help him to locate the Hyksos sword, which he believes holds the spirit of his long-dead half-brother, King Apophis.

    17 May 1999

New York City, US - After messing up the first time over 3000 years ago, I finally take Khyan's head.

    2001

Tokyo, Japan - On a TV in a bar, I see a special news report that Dr. Mina Abadi from the Egyptian Museum has found a sarcophagus buried under the waters of the Aswan High Dam. I recognize the scarab of swords decorating the sarcophagus and realize that it's the Immortal Pharaoh Djer whom I buried 5000 years ago.

    2001

Cairo, Egypt - In one of my less rational moments, I break open a case in the Egyptian Museum to get at an ancient tablet. I end up getting thrown in jail. At my request, Dr. Abadi comes to the jail and I convince her to let me out and take me to see the Pharaoh Djer's sarcophagus.

We go to the museum's warehouse and open the sarcophagus. Sure enough, Djer is there, and he's not pleased. I draw one of the scarab's swords to finish him off, but Dr. Abadi — not knowing why someone's alive in the sarcophagus but apparently wanting him to live long enough to explain himself — hits me on the head with a vase. By the time I get up again, Djer has drawn the other sword from the scarab.

We exchange lunges and parries. I manage to disarm Djer but again — again! — Dr. Abadi interferes, calling for a guard who shoots me in the arm. Djer escapes while I'm down.

    Dec 2002

Paris, France - MacLeod turns up on the doorstep to my new house to grill me for info on the Watcher Sanctuary, a place where Immortals are drugged, unconscious and hidden from the rest of the world so the Watchers can ensure that the Game never ends. Joe, buddy, you guys have really got to change that line about "observe and record, but never interfere."

MacLeod's search for the Sanctuary is too successful... he ends up in it. Joe and I have to rescue him.
